Tanzania: Neonatal Mortality Remains a Problem

Zanzibar — NURSES and Midwives have been told that they can reduce or prevent neonatal mortality by applying simple and local interventions.

This was observed here on Tuesday by Ms Christine Omondi, Programme Officer - Regional Centre for Quality Health care during the opening of the three-day training of trainers seminar on 'Helping Babies Breath (HBB).

She said that many newborns have been dying in big numbers, mainly in developing countries like Tanzania, but nurses and midwives with improved skills can save lives of the children. "In 2009, 8.1 million under-five children died globally.

41 per cent of the number were newborn, 25 per cent died first of life, 50 per cent died within 24 hours, 75 per cent in the first week, and 25 per cent of all deaths occur in Africa," said Omondi.

She said that neonatal period is very critical and that the training has already been conducted in many countries with the aim of strengthening capacity to reduce newborns mortality in the East, Central, and Southern Africa (ECSA) region.

The trainings are being organized by East, Central, and Southern Africa College of Nursing (ECSACON) with support from development partners including the USAID. In her brief speech at the training seminar, the deputy minister for Health, Dr Sira Ubwa Mamboya, said that the neonatal death statistics did not reflect the reality on the ground and appealed to the medical staffs to spare no efforts in saving lives of children.

"To be sincere, these are questionable statistics. The situation is worse," the deputy minister said mentioning that 26 in 100,000 newborns die in the country. The seminar which involves learning about positioning newborns for better breathing is being attended by senior nurses from Zanzibar and Tanzania mainland.
