Whether your children are avid cyclers, still wobbly on training wheels, or somewhere in between, National Bike Month is the perfect time to enjoy your time riding together. Check out these events in May, and save the date for a few particularly family-friendly events in June.
Bicycle Sundays (Sundays, May 6, 13 and 20, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.)
This popular event kicks off May 6 and continues on select Sundays through the end of September. The open road is yours for the taking – at least two and a half miles of it – when Lake Washington Boulevard is closed to vehicle traffic from Mt. Baker Beach to Seward Park. The views are gorgeous, you don’t have to worry about cars … all you have to do is hope for sun. www.seattle.gov/parks/bicyclesunday.
Bike Works Kids’ Bike Swap and Community Festival (Saturday, May 12, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
Kids outgrow bikes almost as often as their clothes. If your child needs a bigger bike, check out the Bike Works Swap at the Rainier Community Center. This terrific event offers parents access to affordable bikes (and keeps the bikes out of landfills). The Bike Works staff have been hard at work refurbishing used bicycles all year long for the occasion. Most families can get a fixed-up ride for $20 or less with a trade-in. Families who don't have a bike to trade can start shopping after noon.
New this year: Bike Works will host a free festival with all sorts of fun activities to engage the kids, so that families will have something entertaining to do while they wait for their number to be called at the Bike Swap. There will be kid-friendly bands, balloon animals, food and more. A bike expo will showcase examples of different bikes and trailers that allow families to be car-free. Seattle Children's will be on site to provide free helmets and helmet fittings, as well as to provide safety tips.www.bikeworks.org.
Puget Sound Tour de Cure (Saturday, May 12)
Kicking off at Redmond's Marymoor Park, this ride raises money for the American Diabetes Association and includes a flat, kid-friendly 15-mile course, a 25-mile scenic route around Lake Sammamish, and more challenging rides. www.diabetes.org/tour.
Port Townsend Rhody Bike Tour (Sunday, May 13)
A fundraiser for the Port Townsend Bicycle Association, this event has a 12-mile trail bike ride for the family as well as more difficult rides. Tour funds help support the city's bicycle safety education program in the schools. Plus, Port Townsend is just a cool place for a getaway. www.ptbikes.org.
Ballard Summer Streets (Friday, May 18)
For three hours, from 4 to 7 p.m., Ballard streets are bike (and foot) only. Come celebrate Cascade Bicycle Club’s Bike to Work Day and Summer Streets Party by making bike art, getting a free bike tune up, test riding a seven passenger conference bike, dancing to some KEXP tunes, enjoying free bites and giveaways and perusing the local bike-friendly vendors. www.seattle.gov/transportation/summer_ballard.htm.
Bike to School Day (Friday, May 18)
Jump on the Bike to School bandwagon with the Cascade Bicycle Club and 35 local schools. Middle and high school students are invited to participate in a friendly, free challenge that entails tracking trips online. Those who make at least four trips by bike during May are entered into a prize drawing. Or, ride with your kids on Bike to School Day. Check out Cascade Bicycle Club’s website to learn more, and for links to city bicycling routes and safety resources. www.cbcef.org
Snohomish Community Bicycle Ride (Saturday, May 19, 10 a.m.)
This family-friendly ride will take place after the dedication of the completed expansion of Centennial Trail. Meet at 506 4th St. in Snohomish and make the short jaunt into historic downtown, dismount and get tasty treats at the Snohomish Scoop ice cream shop. www.ci.snohomish.wa.us/cityevents.htm.
