Woman Saves Unborn Twins by Lying Motionless in Bed for 5 Months

hospital bedHearing the words "strict bed rest" during pregnancy is something no woman ever wants to hear, especially if it's heard during the first or second trimester. Lisa Copley got those exact orders from her doctor -- and wound up being forced to lie completely still in her bed for 24 hours a day for an entire 5 months to save the lives of her twins!

Lisa's cervix was so thin that the only way she could maintain the pregnancy was to literally not move her body for almost half a year, which ultimately caused her muscles to start to atrophy, leaving her unable to walk. She also developed a skin condition that gave her severe hives all over her body. (Can't a girl get a break?)

During her time on bed rest, Lisa was not even allowed to get up take a shower. OMG. Can you even imagine not being able to even bathe?! She must have been ready to absolutely lose her mind -- and even compared lying in the bed staring at the ceiling to what a prisoner likely goes through.

More from The Stir: Infertile Woman Gives Birth 5 Hours After She's Declared Pregnant

But what really struck me about this story was the reason why Lisa's cervix was so thin in the first place. It was due to scar tissue from a surgery she'd had years earlier to remove abnormal cells. And when I was about 21 years old, I had the same exact procedure done. It took forever for my cervix to dilate during my labor with my son, which my doctor attributed to scar tissue from that surgery. Things finally progressed, but after hearing Lisa's story, I can't help but feel like I was truly lucky and blessed not to have any further complications. Of course, I would've done anything to make sure my son was born healthy. But lying in bed for five whole months? I'm pretty sure that would've put me over the edge.

Luckily, Lisa's long hospital stay did the trick, and she delivered her twins at 35 weeks. Both babies and their mama are now doing just fine, and she says every single minute of lying in that bed was worth it. But I can't help but wonder if she cringes a tiny bit every time she sees a hospital bed -- or any bed for that matter. I wouldn't be surprised if she actually welcomes getting up for middle of the night feedings after her ordeal!

Have you had to go on bed rest at all during your pregnancy?

5 great white wine cocktail recipes (and 1 great way to do good while making them)

5 great white wine cocktail recipes (and 1 great way to do good while making them)

Wine cocktail recipes: white wine sangria from Tasty-TrialsNow that it's unofficially summer, I'm in a white wine mindset, which also means delicious white wine cocktails. Fortunately I've got quite a few to share with you. But first, I want to share one of my favorite white wines--with a great story to boot.

After a decade of making wine (and far longer drinking it), winemaker Christian Stark set out to make an affordable, great-tasting wine that also makes a difference in the world. Lucky for us, he succeeded with Stark Thirst. This Sonoma Chardonnay is a fresh, dry white wine fermented in steel tanks, which is a fancy way to say that it doesn't have an oaky flavor. It tastes of crisp fruit and zesty citrus, making it delicious for summer cookouts.

So grab a bottle and sip chilled Stark Thirst Chardonnay on its own--or in one of these white wine cocktails. Because it's not oakey, it's great wherever a dry white wine is called for. Either way, it tastes great and feels good, in more ways than one. - Stacie

Joey Lawrence: My Daughters Talk Loud, Like Me

As his daughters grow older, Joey Lawrence can start to see which parent 6-year-old Charleston and 2-year-old Liberty are really taking after.

“They’re very passionate; they talk a lot. They talk real loud, which is sort of my M.O. I guess,” he tells PEOPLE with a laugh.

Despite growing up in a house full of boys, raising girls has come easily to the star, who’s found a niche with each of his little ones.

“Libby loves trains, so Santa Claus for Christmas brought her the [Chuggington Chugger] train table and all the Chugger train tracks,” he says. “That’s all she wants to do. We do that and I read to her — she loves these little Dr. Seuss books. She likes to ride with me in my car.”

Meanwhile, big sister “Charli and I go to the movies, and I help her with her homework; we play the piano together,” Lawrence says. “We play with Barbies and Color Me Mine and it’s fun.”

While his daughters are his first priority, the actor also makes time for his other baby, the ABC Family series Melissa & Joey, on which he stars and serves as producer. The show’s second season premieres Wednesday at 8 p.m., but filming of its third was pushed back when costar Melissa Joan Hart announced she’s expecting her third child.

“It’s not my baby,” Lawrence jokes, adding, “She just wants to take the time, have her little one and then come back to work.”

April is Autism Month; New Studies Look for Causes

Blog

by Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff, Executive Director & CEO, Healthy Child Healthy World

On the heels of last week’s CDC report that found higher rates of autism than ever before—now affecting 1 in 88 children and representing a 78% increase in the last 10 years—a new study published last week in the journal Clinical Epigenetics is especially interesting. The study looked at how substances such as high fructose corn syrup can lead to mineral deficiencies, how deficiencies in minerals such as zinc can reduce the body’s ability to eliminate toxic substances such as mercury and pesticides, which have been linked to autism.

Another study, published in the journal Pediatrics, found that obesity during pregnancy may increase a woman’s chances of giving birth to a child with autism—by about 67 percent. When asked about theories linking obesity and autism, the study’s author told The Washington Post that excess blood sugar and inflammation-related substances in the mother’s blood may damage the fetal brain.

Dioxin Drama Continues

After last month’s 21-year delayed EPA assessment of dioxin as not posing a “significant health risk,” last weeks news that the EPA has withdrawn clean up guidelines for the substance alarmed activists who warn that without guidelines, cleanup levels will vary from state to state.

Nail Polish Labeling Lies

Pregnant moms should be especially conscious of a new Department of Toxic Substances Control reporter published last week that found nail polishes labeled as “big-three free” actually contained high levels of chemicals toluene, formaldehyde and DBP which have been linked to birth defects, asthma and other illnesses, according to the Washington Post. Yet another reason to support the Safe Cosmetics Act, which would finally—finally!—establish regulation for the currently self-regulating $50 billion personal care industry. Send a message to Congress in support of the Safe Cosmetics Act!

Can Carcinogens Be Free & Gentle?

Even after more than 74,000 consumers signed a petition asking Tide to remove the carcinogenic 1,4 dioxane from its’ Free & Gentle line of laundry detergents marketed to newborns, Procter & Gamble still has not responded. We stepped up pressure by working with Women’s Voices for the Earth to organize a Social Media Day of Action on Friday, in which 307 people posted messages on Tide’s Facebook wall with the message to get the cancer-causing chemical out of their detergent; we’ll deliver a letter to the company today, signed by groups including Breast Cancer Fund, Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments, and Health Care Without Harm. Meanwhile, we’re just about 500 signatures away from our goal of 75,000. Have you signed on yet?

Party Week Deadline

This community is inspired! More than 3,000 participants have signed on to be part of National Healthy Child Party Week May 5-12. Today is the LAST day to order a kit in time for the week. But the story’s not over: We’re making more kits so that 5,000 can participate in the month of May. Please join us in hosting a party that will change the world!

Earth Day Expands

Three cheers for Earth Day! The April 22nd celebration that became official in the U.S. in 1970 is now celebrated by 175 countries, according to Hudson Valley Magazine. How will you celebrate?

DIY teacher gifts from the class? Reader Q+A

DIY teacher gifts from the class? Reader Q+A

DIY teacher giftHelp! We are trying to come up with an end of year DIY teacher gift from the whole classroom for our kindergarten teacher. Something every kid can participate in but won't require too much work from the parents. I know Cool Mom Picks will have great ideas. Thank you so much! -Margaret B

We totally understand. As easy as it is to just donate some money towards a gift card, there are some teachers who are so special to us that we really want to do something that truly comes from the heart of each and every kid.

A custom photo book from the class is always a perfect gift, and services like Shutterfly and Blurb and Snapfish make it so easy. A few ideas:

-Give each kid a page and include one photo of them, along with a quote, like their favorite memory of the school year. (This Blurb book from a preschool is beautifully done.)
-Ask kids to each illustrate a picture of the teacher and scan them into the book.
-Take a simple pic of each kid after school using a smartphone and the Photobooth app so each student gets four funny snapshots on each page.
-Invite the kids to all write on a topic that's special to the teacher. Here, see how a third grade class shared there take on topic, Love is... but imagine "Dance is..." for a dance teacher, or "Art is..." for an art teacher.

You can also make a custom notebook for the teacher, featuring a photo of the entire class on the cover page, or a piece of art made by all the children. The one above from Blurb, but also find affordable options at Minted.

A play on the "family tree" idea, this custom printable for a teacher just needs the class's fingerprints to finish it up. You can choose to label the fingerprints or not, and even change the colors of the little print, say if you want to distinguish between the AM class and the PM class.

If you've got a little more time and a crafty parent to help out: Scan the kids' artwork onto sticker paper and adhere to a plain end table, storage box, or even a wooden chair, as seen in this project from Elsa Mora.

Pregnant at the Picnic

Spilling Food on Pregnant Belly

Yum! This weekend's celebrations certainly open up for the summer food season. There are some great foods that are best found in the hottest months of the year. One of my favorites its watermelon. While this food doesn't hold a lot of potential for illness, that's not true of other picnic foods, particularly when you're pregnant.

There are some pregnancy rules of picnic food they will hold true no matter what type of picnic you're at. But in addition to the food, think about safety from the point of the sun and heat as well. Drink to thirst and try to keep a cool glass of water nearby, remember that caffeine can cause you to dehydrate. You will also want to stay out of the direct sun for long periods of time and to wear sunscreen.

What are your Memorial Day plans?

Gambia: Lady Convicted of Concealment of Birth

The Special Criminal Court in Banjul, presided over by Justice Emmanuel Nkea Thursday, 24th May, 2012 convicted and sentenced one Maimuna Badjie for the offence of concealment of birth, contrary to Section 207 of the Criminal Code, Laws of The Gambia.

The accused, Maimuna Badjie was charged with murder, contrary to Section 187 and 188 of the Criminal Code Cap 10:01 Vol 111; Revised Laws of The Gambia, 2009. In the particulars of offence, the state alleged that the accused murdered her newly born child by throwing the baby into a toilet in New Jeshwang, Kanifing Municipality on the 28th August 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the offence and the prosecution adduced in evidence the testimonies of four witnesses and tendered four exhibits in support of the indictment, whilst the accused testified as a lone witness in her defence and did not tender any exhibit. In his judgement, Justice Nkea disclosed that the prosecution's case is that on the 28th August 2011, the police received a tip-off of a baby dumping case and two of the prosecution witnesses went to the scene, where the accused was identified and arrested as the culprit.

The police were informed that the baby was dumped into a toilet but the cadaver was later retrieved and buried beside the toilet by one Sulayman Badjie. The cadaver was exhumed by the police, and allowed a photographer to take snap shots of it. These pictures were in evidence as exhibit "A", whilst the cadaver was later taken to the RVTH by the police for post mortem and the autopsy report was admitted as exhibit C.

At the police, statements were recorded from the accused and the said statements were admitted in evidence as exhibits B and B1. The judge further disclosed that in her cautionary statement to the police, the accused admitted to have delivered the baby on 28th August 2011 between 4 and 5am and she stated further that the child died before being dumped in the toilet. The accused relied on her statement to the police as her defence.

Justice Nkea revealed that at the close of the case on the 22nd May 2012 both the prosecution and the defence waived their right to address the court. Justice Nkea noted that in a charge of murder, the prosecution must prove the following elements: There was death; that the accused person participated in or caused the said death; that the death was unlawful; that the death was caused with malice aforethought; and the prosecution must negate all the defences or possible defences raised by the evidence in the trial.

Justice Nkea asserted that murder is a very serious offence, which attracts such a serious penalty as the death sentence, adding that to succeed on this charge, the prosecution must lead copious, cogent, compelling and unequivocal evidence which points irresistibly to the accused as the person who committed the offence.

He pointed out that the law is settled on the duty of the prosecution to prove all the elements of the offence and that they do so by either direct or circumstantial evidence, but in either case the prosecution must succeed on the strength of its evidence and not on the weakness of the defence.

The presiding judge therefore revealed that there is copious and compelling evidence that the newborn baby died, adding that the evidence of all the prosecution witnesses all corroborated the fact that the baby is dead. The autopsy report described the cadaver to be in a state of severe decomposition and the evidence of the accused person herself further strengthens the fact that the baby is dead.

Justice Nkea disclosed that there is compelling evidence that the accused delivered of a child on the 28th August 2011, but also had the child died after it was born. That there is also evidence that the accused disposed of the cadaver of the deceased baby in a toilet, noting that the irresistible inference the court could draw from the said act is that the accused intended to secretly dispose of the cadaver and by doing so to conceal its birth.

Nkea further disclosed that he was satisfied that in the peculiar circumstances of the instant case, the accused was guilty of concealing the birth of a child and not of murder as charged. In her plea of mitigation, Lawyer Oleide Uduma informed the court that the convict is a first time offender of about 18 years old, adding that she had shown sufficient remorse. She reminded the court that she even collapsed before the court due to her poor health.

Lawyer Uduma promised the court that if she were given another chance, the convict would be reformed, urging the court to temper justice with mercy. She further urged the court to invoke Section 29 (2) of the Criminal Code in favour of the convict.

Passing sentence, Justice Emmanuel Nkea disclosed that in determining an appropriate sentence to be imposed on her, he noted that it is his duty to have regard, not only the nature of the crime she has committed and the interest of the society but also to her personality; age and the circumstances surrounding the commission of the offence. Nkea pointed out that as a young convict, she should not fall victim of an indiscriminate exercise of his discretion with regards to punishment.

The reason, Justice Nkea noted that the convict is a young person, whom he considered to be prima facie, immature and irresponsible. The presiding judge disclosed that he considered the convict as a first offender and a young person with much of her life still trying ahead of her.

Justice Nkea said he saw her collapse before him in the court once, indicating that her health is not the best and therefore sentence her to 8 months imprisonment commencing from the 22nd day of September 2011, being the date she was first remanded in custody by the Kanifing Magistrates' Court.

Namibia: Save Our Children From Unnecessary Death

THE death of Juliana Kleopas and her newborn baby at the Katutura State Hospital on May 13 2012 occasioned angst and soul searching among Namibians not only about nursing care in particular, but also about the public health service generally.

Authorities have, in the meantime, announced that an investigation has been commissioned to get to the bottom of the incident. We can only hope that the report will be available as a public document for lessons learnt all round. Staying with the theme of adolescent health, we write this morning on a report by The Economist reproduced in The Namibian of Thursday, May 24.

The report we refer to deals with under-five or child mortality rate per 1 000 live births. The report is quite shocking and unsettling in respect of our country. In the table accompanying the report, our country is jostling for the bottom spot with Liberia -a country which has only recently escaped decades old civil strife and war. How can this be the case for a country, such as ours, which spends a small fortune compared to most on health? A country which has recently moved upwards to a plush neighbourhood of upper middle income countries?

A good place, as any other, to start in interrogating this, may be the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). There are eight MDGs. Reducing child mortality rates by 2015 is one of them.

For Namibians, the report card on this particular MDG is a curate's egg. This is because whereas the global trend, partly as a consequence of the MDGs, moves downward, ours is contrarian.

In the most recent MDG report Namibia submitted to the UN in 2010, the authorities report that infant mortality rate decreased from 56.6 deaths per 1 000 live births to 46 in 2006/07.

Significantly however, they continue to say "Namibia is unlikely to reduce infant mortality to attain the 2015 target of 19 infant deaths per 1 000 births." Concomitantly, the number of under-five children that were malnourished and stunted in fact increased from 28.4% in 1993/4 to 29% in 2006/ 07.

Perhaps there are little surprises here, because at the time of the release of the second report in 2008, Prime Minister Nahas Angula already made known that Namibia was not likely to reach the MDG targets for maternal and infant mortality.

"Something must be done. Even if it means training young people to train their fellow young women on prenatal and Traditional Birth Attendant to assist with deliveries, we should do it," Angula said at the time.

It is this something which as a nation, we fail to grasp that accounts for our ignominious score on the health of our children. It is not only unsafe delivery, which led to the death of mother Juliana Kleopas and her baby which account for our unacceptable and disgraceful mortality rate. The causes are multiple and include, among others, malnutrition, the relative high incidence of HIV-AIDS and other infections sensu lato.

Therefore, our horrendous under-5 mortality rate is far from being a health problem. The evidence is growing that our children are malnourished and stunted. These are not medical conditions that speak to the inadequacy of our broader policies of equity and social cohesion.

We can give the children as many Panado's as we wish, but if they have little or nothing to eat these will show up in our under-five mortality rates and other measures of poverty.

As if speaking to our huge health bill, Dr Margaret Chan, WHO Director General, said in our parliament recently "money alone does not buy better health. Good policies that promote equity have a better chance."

A glance at the accompanying table produced by The Economist shows that most of the others are low income countries.

Also (economic) growth per se is not the silver bullet. However, as the article by The Economist puts it "an increase in national income should reduce mortality not just because it is usually associated with lower poverty and better nutrition but also because growth can be a proxy for other good things: more sensible economic policies; more democratic, accountable governments; and a greater commitment to improving people's living standards."

So the causality between growth and reduction in mortality is tenuous. But more equitable distribution of assets and income; and a health delivery system, in the ethos and high morals of Florence Nightingale, may begin to eat into our stubbornly high child mortality rate.

It is the children who are, after all, the future of a country. As the recently concluded national census will bear out, ours is typically a youthful population. But a tree which receives little or no water is most likely to die. Our under-5 mortality rate says that inequity remains stark. It says families have no wherewithal and are struggling to feed their children. It says our social and welfare policies have marginal impact. And it is also a record of spectacular failure of governance that our under-five mortality rate moves in the wrong direction from the generally upbeat progress in even the poorest countries. It is a record that Government's policies of laissez-faire and cronyism have not served our children and Namibians generally, well.

As our country embarks on National Development Plan IV, there may be a need for introspection on the priorities of the country; and to craft a plan and programmes at the centre of which will be the welfare of the people, and in particular the young.

In the new order of things, Government would need to bring on board the broadest coalition of partners from the civil society, the faith based organizations and others to interrogate both the content and delivery of programmes for our children.

The recent adoption as government policy, of pre-primary education is but an important element in this policy renewal and revival in the interest of the child. To be sure, parents, community and government, at all levels, need to come on board and pull in the same direction. Whilst we are mindful of the substantial resources currently committed to education, it remains important that we re-examine our welfare spend to ensure that it reaches those for whom it is intended in order to make the difference.

Unlike countries of the developed world, we are essentially a country where the predominant segment of our population is significantly young. It is them who are the country's ultimate insurance policy. It is premiums paid today, by way of investments, which will bear fruit for us all round, to secure our country in the League of Nations.

It is by investing in them, that we shall not be at the bottom of the league as we currently are with the under-five mortality rate. This is a call which we are sure speaks to all parents. We must make government policies and expenditure plans to reflect this call.

We shall anxiously wait to see where the next table places the health of our children.

We Are Kinda Obsessed With Robin Thicke and Paula Patton’s Baby Boy, Julian…

And can you blame us? That’s Robin and his little boy Julian Thicke in the pic above and we can’t handle that sweet smile. And don’t even get us started on those gorgeous blonde locks. He is such a cutie!

We also couldn’t help but notice that he’s rocking a pair of Yo Gabba Gabba Vans. The limited edition kicks came out back in 2010, but celebs still love them… probably because their kids can’t get enough Yo Gabba Gabba.

If your little one is fan of the cool Nickelodeon crew, here’s where to get the same pair Julian is wearing.

New Pregnancy Link to Autism Is Scary ... But Don't Panic Yet

pregnantResearchers at the UC Davis MIND Institute have recently discovered a link between fevers during pregnancy and autism. According to their findings, women who spiked a fever while pregnant were much more likely to have a baby diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum.

There were 191 mothers who participated in this study who reported developing fevers while pregnant. Out of that group, 76 took medication to bring their temperature down, while the other 115 did not take anything to lower the fever. And the findings were pretty stunning as far as the autism spectrum goes. The women who did not take ibuprofen or acetaminophen to lower their fever were 2 1/2 times more likely to have babies with a communication disorder, and 2 3/4 times more likely to have babies with developmental problems.

But the women who did take medication to treat their fevers? The autism link went down drastically -- as their babies were no more likely to be on the spectrum as mothers who did not have fevers while pregnant.

Researchers theorize that when a woman spikes a fever, her body has an inflammatory response to fight whatever infection she has. When that response is suppressed by taking medication, the risk of the baby having a developmental or behavioral problem goes down.

I can remember getting a pretty nasty cold when I was pregnant with my son, but luckily, I never developed a fever. But I was very hesitant to take anything to alleviate my miserable symptoms for fear of harming my baby. However, my doctor did assure me that it was safe to take Tylenol if I was experiencing aches and pains. Getting that reassurance from her really put me at ease.

I don't think this study should cause any sort of alarm if you do happen to spike a fever while pregnant. If anything, it serves as an important reminder to call your doctor in the event that it happens, and he or she can advise you of what kind of medication to take, how much, and how often, etc.

Have you experienced any fevers or health problems during your pregnancy?

Mom Shoots Out Baby in Ridiculously Fast Labor -- Nice Catch, Grandma! (VIDEO)

Lily GodsboroughWe've seen plenty of stories over the years of women whose labor comes on so quickly that they don't make it to the hospital. Some deliver in elevators or in cars alongside the road. For a Utah woman, however, labor came on so suddenly she didn't even have time to sit down.

It was less than hour after Ellen Goldsborough felt the first contractions that she knew it was too late. She and her mother Elizabeth Carlson, were on their way to the running car her husband had waiting to take her to the hospital, but it was clear they wouldn't make it that far. Goldsborough told ABC4, "I felt the baby crown and I said mom she’s coming. I feel her head."

So they rushed back to the apartment, but didn't make it further than the front door when little Lily made her arrival -- while mom was still standing. Fortunately, grandma was quick with her hands and caught her.

Dad Geoffrey Goldsborough described the frantic scene:

Mother-in-law and myself just looked at each other like, deep penetrative gaze like Oh dear it’s coming. You know so we drug her back into the house. I had to kick grandma or Liz’s feet out of the way just to close the door.

Grandma said it all happened so fast, and that little Lily was "slippery as a fish," but a perfectly healthy fish. She weighed in at 7 pounds 8 ounces and was 19 inches long; mother and baby are said to be doing well.

Phew. I know everyone wishes for a short and easy labor, but that's a little extreme. It's great there was happy ending, but it certainly is one of those stories that makes multiple hours of labor look a lot better.

Have you ever had an extremely short labor like this or known anyone who has?

Laundry: Being Green While Getting Clean!

Blog

This week, we asked our community to share some of their non-toxic laundry tips with us. We were so overwhelmed by the many blog submissions that we didn’t want to highlight onlyl one! Below is what our bloggers suggest when "going green" with laundry.

Micaela from Mindful Momma suggests safer ways to scent, soften & reduce static in your laundry.

Scent:

  • Toss a lavender sachet into your dryer. You can easily make your own or buy them on Etsy but I admit to buying them from Trader Joe's occasionally.
  • Put a few drops of your favorite essential oil on a reusable cloth in the dryer.

Soften:

  • Add 1/2 cup of baking soda in with your detergent in the wash cycle. Baking soda is a natural water softener.
  • Vinegar is also popular for softening laundry. About 1/2 cup in the fabric softener container should do the trick.
  • Soak a cotton cloth in your favorite eco-friendly fabric softener. Squeeze out any excess liquid and toss in the dryer.

Static:

  • Dry synthetic fabrics separately from natural fibers as synthetics tend to create more static cling.
  • Throw a dryer ball or a tennis ball into the dryer to help eliminate static. I love these handmade, wool dryer balls from Etsy!*
  • Add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. Don't worry, your favorite shirt won't smell like a pickle - the vinegar smell dissipates in the wash!

Betsy from Eco-Novice shows us how to green our laundry in 10 easy steps, such as:

  • Use an eco-friendly laundry detergent. Use as little as possible to get the job done.
  • To remove stains or whiten fabrics, try using hydrogen peroxide, lemon juice, borax, vinegar, or an eco-friendly bleach-alternative instead of bleach.

Claire from MomsRising [http://www.momsrising.org/blog/top-5-safe-laundry-tips/] has some good tips on buying laundry supplies:

Diane form Big Green Purse uses a clothes line to dry her laundry. Here’s what she looks for when buying one:

You can use a length of rope you already have, but make sure it’s thin enough to be able to clip a clothes pin to. Otherwise, you’ll have to throw things over the top of the line, which works unless a strong (i.e., fast-drying) breeze is about. You can find several clothes line options in the Big Green Purse store, or at your local hardware store. NOTE: Most lines stretch over time, so you may need to buy a line tightener to keep the line taut enough so that the clothes don’t end up dragging on the ground.
You can try a rotary line dryer. Hang the laundry, then use a hand crank to easily raise the whole load another 16 inches or so to catch the breeze and dry quickly. For something simpler, install a retractable clothes line in your bathroom or laundry room. These lines can’t accommodate a lot of laundry at once, but they’re great for socks and underwear.

Nigeria: Maternal Deaths 'Unacceptable', Says First Lady

First lady Patience Jonathan this afternoon called the deaths of hundreds of Nigerian women every year at childbirth "unacceptable."

Her comments came as she flagged off Maternal and Child Health (MNCH) Week to provide free medical care for millions of women and children in government-run health centres across the country.

The free services will include

birth registration

screening for nutrition

mosquito nets treated with long-lasting insecticides

antenatal care

child spacing information

breastfeeding

health education

neonatal care (for newborns)

vitamin A supplementation

immunisation

handwashing

Health minister Onyebuchi Chukwu called for legislation to make national health insurance mandatory, insisting it was the only way to make health care affordable and accessible for millions of Nigerians.

Unacceptable excuse

Jonathan flagged off the MNCH Week at Maitama District Hospital in the heart of Abuja, one of the city's hospitals beset by rapidly swelling patient population.

She said: "It is no more acceptable to make excuses for why one in 13 Nigerian women die in childbirth or why up to 157 out of every 1,000 Nigerian children may die before he or she reaches age five."

The MNCH Week, marked twice every year since the National Council on Health approved it three years ago, provides free medical services for women and children for seven days in all government-owned hospitals.

"The week is an opportunity to do something about this unacceptable situation, and remains our collective burden to ensure it is a success," Jonathan said in statement read by Helen Mark, wife of senate president.

NPHCDA executive director Muhammad Ado said the week was "opportunity to reach every mother and child" and called on state governments to ensure citizens get the free services.

The Federal Capital Territory administration assured the free services, including oral rehydration therapies, would be available in all 246 health centres within its territory. Last year, coverage for immunisation using DPT rose to 78%, said FCT minister of state Olajumoke Akinjide. It was also the first time in ten years that the FCT was free of wild polio virus, she added.

Mandatory insurance

Health minister Chukwu emphasised the services are free wherever government has them. But he said problems of skilled personnel, ignorance, distance from health facilties and affordability were reasons many fail to access health services.

"One of the ways we can achieve universal health care coverage is through some form of insurance," he suggested.

Many state governments are yet to begin buying health insurance for their staff.

Authorities of the National Health Insurance Scheme have admitted only the federal government was on the scheme, along with few private-sector businesses.

"We need to make health insurance mandatory," he said in direct comments to the "Chairman [of the] Senate Committee on Health [Gyang Dantong], we need to work on this." Chukwu said health insurance would make healthcare more affordable and accessible to individuals and move the country "to the next stage."

Tanzania: Clerics Laud NGOs for Safe Motherhood Bill

CLERICS have hailed the civil society for coming up with the draft Safe Motherhood Bill, saying the proposed law will improve welfare of the people.

The clerics told the 'Daily News' on the sidelines of a consultative meeting on the Bill, that moral decay in the society was among the reasons for unacceptably high maternal and infant mortality.

The meeting has been organised by Care International in collaboration with the Tanzania Women Lawyers Association (TAWLA) and White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood.

"So many girls are coming into churches claiming that they have been abandoned by their partners, they are so devastated and so end up doing abortion.

"In such a situation we need a law that will hold accountable responsible persons," said the General Secretary of Morovian Church, Rev Adolf Mwakanyale.

Sheikh Mohammed Khamis from the Tanzania Muslim Council (BAKWATA) supported the move by NGOs to come up with the draft Bill on safe motherhood that would oversee all issues related to reproductive health.

"We are in a situation where children give birth to children. The proposed law sets up the right age for marriage and how to deal with people who have sexually aggressive to children," he said.

The Senior Pastor with the Magomeni Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Jonas Singo, said he was moved by the statistics that 19 women die everyday during delivery. The General Secretary of Presbyterian Church, Rev Freddie Kyara noted that the draft Bill has come at a time when it is needed most.

The proposed law is intended to promote the rights of mothers and adolescents in accessing reproductive health services. It has various provisions which address issues of access to contraceptives and family planning, maternal and new born health as well as sexual and reproductive health of adolescents.

Others include, termination of pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, harmful practices affecting sexual and reproductive health.

Bainbridge Island’s Kids Discovery Museum Celebrates Birthday With Free Admission and Festivities

On Saturday, June 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Kids Discovery Museum (KiDiMu), the children’s museum on Bainbridge Island, will host a "Birthday Bash" to mark the second anniversary in its Island Gateway home, just steps away from the Seattle ferry. The celebration will feature a free-admission day at the museum, free family attractions, entertainment and giveaways.

Local performers from Kitsap and King county, as well as community partners and volunteers will help KiDiMu make the day special for visiting families. To get the party started, at 10 a.m., visitors will enjoy African beats by the youth Motsimoyo Marimba band. The music will continue with sing-along fun presented by a local folk musician David Webb and his guitar.

At noon, Roberto the Magnificent will add some magic to the celebration with his performance, to be followed by the Seattle-based rock-and-roll band The-Not-Its!, who will invite the festive crowd to join in the parking lot dance at 1 p.m. Throughout the day, officers from the Island will make surprise appearances to offer children an up-close look at their police cars and fire trucks.

In addition, local vendors and community partners will offer giveaways, including special treats from Popcorn Chef and Bon Bon Confections (while supplies last). The 122 restaurant will help “power” visiting KiDiMu Explorers by offering snacks for sale, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit KiDiMu. Tasha Vansse Photography will provide a photo booth to help the guests capture their special memory free of charge (additional photos will also be available for sale).

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., families can enjoy complimentary face painting, sidewalk chalk, tattoos and balloons. As a special “party favor,” the museum will invite attendees to enter a drawing for their own birthday celebration at KiDiMu. For more information on the Birthday Bash, visit KiDiMu’s website at www.kidimu.org or call 206-855-4650.

Side Stretch in Pregnancy

Side Stretch in Pregnancy

The side stretch can be very helpful in pregnancy. One thing I noticed that it really helped with was a feeling of having more room in my chest and sides. Before I would stretch I felt "cramped" and "full of baby." I'm sure anyone post about 30 weeks gestation knows what that feels like. So I'd do these stretches, even just sitting on the couch or in a chair would work. Then I'd feel like I had more room to do fun things like breathe. I also think I had fewer issues with round ligament pain when I did this exercise more often.

Do you feel like you have more room after doing the side stretch?
