The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) on Thursday disclosed that 70,000 newly born babies in Nigeria are HIV positive.
Prof. John Idoko, the Director-General of NACA, made the disclosure during a call on Gov. Ibikunle Amosun in Abeokuta.
Idoko also said that HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria were prevalent among Nigerian pregnant women Idoko called for the improvement of the State Action Committee on AIDs (SACA) to be able to fight the spread of the scourge.
Idoko urged all levels of government to assist the agency in strengthening the fight against HIV/AIDs and other related diseases, adding that the agency would work hard to eliminate mother- to-child transmission.
In his speech, Amosun expressed satisfaction with the decentralisation policy of the healthcare delivery system of NACA.
He said that the agency's gesture would touch the lives of the masses, particularly at the grass root level.
