Kenya: Alcohol Linked to Declining Birth Rate in Central

An NGO has claimed the birth rate in Central Kenya is on the decline as a result of alcoholism.

The National Council on Women and Youth executive Mary Kirika said over-indulgence in alcohol has seen birth rates decline. She told a women's meeting at Kirigiti in Kiambu that alcohol laced with chemicals has affected men's reproductive behaviour.

"It is shocking that the liquors being sold to our children is not inspected and has toxic chemicals," said Kirika. Kirika said she has talked to the young men to address the problem.

"I have been talking to people in the grassroots and the women are ready to make families. However, the men are the problem as they cannot reproduce due to the effects of alcohol,"said Kirika. Kirika said illicit liquor packaged in plastics is still being sold in the area.

"I talked to a few men who told me that once you drink the liquor, they become weak and it affects their performance," said Kirika. "Our fathers also used to drink and they had many children. Nowadays the liquors are bad as men are not even interested in women and that is why kikuyu women are being married by other communities and this problem is seen in central province more so kiambu county is the worst hit,"said Kirika

Kirika however called upon the Kenya bureau of standards to be checking on what is put on those drinks and asked local leaders to team up with the authorities to help save central province from consuming killer brews.
