Kenya: Malindi Girls Pregnant

An alarm has been raised in Malindi district after at least 100 schoolgirls were reported pregnant since January.

The are however conflicting figures with the Malindi DC Joshua Nkanatha saying 110 were reported while DEO Mary Kamurua gave a record of 52. Speaking at a meeting in Kisumondogo in Malindi town, Nkanatha said the situation was alarming and blamed the parents for not talking care of their children.

He said the problem contributed a lot to the poor results in the area and wondered why the concerned parents were not serious in the development of the children. "As of now, we have about 110 primary school girls who are pregnant and those are the known cases alone, there could be others who are not known but they exist," he said.

Nkanatha said the drug trafficking and abuse also contributed to the increased in drop out rates and early pregnancies and warned children against engaging in such behaviors. "I would like to urge parents to be responsible and not shun away to educate their children on sex education," he said. Currently Nkanatha said teachers were no loner strict in schools after the corporal punishment was banned a fact that left the parents alone to be keen and serious to groom their children into responsible people. When contacted for comment the DEO said she was aware of only 52 primary school girls who were pregnant. She said 32 of them were from Watamu, 16 from Kakoneni area and the other four pupils hailed from Central within Malindi town.
