He’s Here! Meet Jennifer Garner’s Baby Boy, Samuel Garner Affleck!

Ah ha! So that’s where he was. While the rest of the Garner-Affleck family was at the beach, it looks like little Samuel Garner Affleck was enjoying some QT with grandma. The littlest Affleck was snapped sleeping in his stroller this weekend while his grandmother pushed him along.

And it looks like Jennifer Garner is yet another Hollywood mom who loves aden + anais baby blankets. That’s one of their bamboo swaddles hanging over Samuel’s stroller. Here’s where you can get the same one:

Free Family Fun at YMCA “Healthy Kids Day”

The University Family YMCA – along with nine other area Ys – will host "Healthy Kids Day" on April 28, a free community event to celebrate physical activity, healthy eating and fun ways to keep active over the summer. The events run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and there will be free t-shirts for the first 100 kids at each location.

"Healthy Kids Day at the Y gives kids and parents a chance to play, meet neighbors and learn about ways to live a healthy lifestyle," says Steve Lewis, executive director of the University Family YMCA. "Getting outside, exercising together and eating well are all part of healthy living for both parents and kids."

At the University event, kids can make duct tape wallets or buttons, have fun at the bouncy house, play with sidewalk chalk, and enjoy face painting, music and carnival games. Attendees also get a chance to watch an interactive jump rope performance and take a picture with firefighters. Parents can peruse the various booths to learn more about healthy living.

"Every family with children ages 0 to 6 will receive a free three-visit pass to work out while their children jump, wiggle and play in the Y's Kids Gym," adds Lewis. "There will also be a drawing for a free year-round membership and joining fees are waived all weekend."

Other branches will offer a similar line-up of activities on Healthy Kids Day. The following YMCAs are participating:

Healthy Kids Day is part of the YMCA’s national initiative to improve the health of families. For more information, visit the Healthy Kids Day webpage.

Uganda: Maternal Health Case Puts Govt On the Spot

As Sylvia Nalubowa cried out in agony and begged the nurses to help her, she pledged to give them part of her kibanja (plot of land), hens and pigs if they could save her life.

Only 38, Nalubowa had developed complications after she managed to give birth to one of her twins normally. With the second baby twin still posited in her uterus, Nalubowa's mother-in-law, Rhoda Kukkirizza, moved her from the government health centre III in Mityana to Mityana district hospital, hoping Nalubowa would get better services there. She did not. An affidavit to a Constitutional Court petition, challenging government to provide better maternal health services, states that Nalubowa died at the hands of negligent and corrupt medical workers.

She became part of the statistics that are Uganda's maternal mortality rate or MMR (the number of women that die whilst giving birth). Standing at 435 of 100,000 live births, there is general consensus that Uganda's MMR remains unacceptably high. In 2009, Nalubowa's tragic tale put a face to the country's MMR. Her death shook the administration of Mityana district hospital and the ripples spread throughout the nation. It did not take the civil society long to voice its disgust.

The Centre for Health, Human Rights and Development (CEHURD) did more than voice its disgust. It lodged a constitutional petition, seeking a declaration that government's failure to provide proper maternal health services to women be deemed a violation of their rights.

Nalubowa's family, together with that of Jennifer Anguko, another woman who died due to negligence during childbirth in 2010, are among the petitioners seeking justice, not just for their departed relatives, but also for other women who have lost their lives while giving life, as well as others likely to become statistics in Uganda's grim MMR.

Filed on March 3, 2011, the case kicked off with a very high momentum and attracted ample interest from the media and Ugandans at large. It was supported by affidavits from the families of Nalubowa and Anguko, and from human rights experts like Professor Ben Twinomugisha (Dean, faculty of Law at Makerere University). In their submissions to court, the petitioners argued that the right to health was a human right the government had failed to respect and protect.

The state, however, denied violating women's right to health, contending that the petition was speculative and without merit. But the petitioners insisted that the maternal deaths were due to government failure to provide basics like razor blades, plastic sheets and other consumables, let alone medicines and medical personnel to attend to pregnant women.

In response, the state reasoned that the government's meagre resources have to cater for various competing interests that also affect other human rights. And, health aside, the state said the petition raised political rather than legal questions, and objected to court hearing it. The petitioners now await the court's decision on whether or not it will hear the case.

"We just want court to tell us whether the death of over 16 women due to child birth-related complications is not a violation of human rights. Why is the judiciary dragging its feet?" says David Kabanda, a lawyer for the petitioners.

A letter signed by Deputy Chief Justice Mpagi Bahigeine not only expresses regret at the delay in delivering the ruling, but also promises that everything possible is being done to ensure disposal of the case.

But the petitioners are not convinced. "We do not want regrets," Kabanda says. "We want a ruling. The judiciary should tell us if they do not have the mandate to decide the case so that we seek other avenues."

He adds that if the Constitutional Court has expediently disposed of other cases -- like the one that challenged the Inspector General of Government's mandate to prosecute cases of corruption, a case also filed in 2011 -- it should be in position to quickly decide on the pertinent issue of women's lives.

"We understand that there is backlog and the judiciary is understaffed, but priority should go to the rights of pregnant women. Pregnancy will not wait. Every day, 16 women die due to pregnancy-related complications," Kabanda says.

Judiciary only hope

Uganda's Constitution has a comprehensive bill of rights, but its rich provisions on human rights have not necessarily translated into respect for human rights in the country. In addition, Uganda is signatory to international human rights instruments such as the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the Convention on the Rights of a Child, and the regional African Charter on Human and People's rights.

All these protect the rights of women and children, and the right to health. On December 15, 2011, Parliament passed a resolution, which, if executed, would come in handy in addressing the issue of maternal mortality. The resolution urges government to expedite the reformation of the midwives' training curriculum and to recruit a minimum of 2,000 well-trained and well-motivated midwives and other medical personnel.

It further says government should report periodically to Parliament on progress on maternal health. Uganda, as a member of the World Health Organisation's Safe Motherhood programme, is expected to spend $1.40 per capita on maternal health. It, however, currently spends only $0.50, a mere 36 percent of the required minimum per capita.

The reality is that at the entrance of any government hospital in Uganda, a woman going to give birth is required to present a plastic sheet, razorblade, cotton wool, gauze and other consumables before she can receive any medical attention. Bribes to medical personnel are the norm, and experiences like Nalubowa's read like a familiar folktale told over and over again. But can a court ruling turn around the tragic scenario where 5,840 women die in child birth each year? Time will tell.

Africa: Sustainable Development Means Tackling Childbirth Rates - Report

London — Least developed countries (LDCs) must improve women's access to education and family planning if they are to achieve sustainable development, according to recommendations in a Royal Society report, People and the Planet, launched this week (26 April).

Although global population growth is slowing, rates in LDCs - particularly Sub-Saharan Africa - are expected to remain high for the rest of the century, hampering efforts to reduce poverty, according to the report's authors, who include experts from Brazil, China and Ethiopia.

"Africa alone will actually contribute to more than 70 per cent of the increase in the global population [this century]," said Eliya Msiyaphazi Zulu, executive director of the African Institute for Development Policy and president of the Union for African Population Studies, adding that there is a well-established link between low education levels and high birthrates.

Education delays the onset of childbirth, but also empowers women, "because once you're more educated, you can have more autonomy, more say in decision making processes in your marriage," Zulu said.

The report notes that educated women are also more likely to seek out healthcare for their children and get jobs, thereby contributing to their economies. Consequently, instead of waiting for development to slow population growth, Zulu said, countries should focus on reducing fertility rates to promote development.

"The evidence shows that the majority of women in Africa and the other [LDCs] actually want to have fewer children but they are not able to do that because they are not using family planning or they don't have access to it," he told SciDev.Net.

"We need to invest in family planning programmes to address the barriers that women are facing, that are preventing them from accessing and using family planning.

"Not only will that help reduce population growth ... but it will also help enhance this goal of uplifting people out of poverty - because as we know, when we invest in family planning, when we slow down population growth, we empower women, we improve child and maternal health, we also provide a bit of opportunity for the poor countries to improve human capital, which they desperately need to move to middle income status."

Zulu said family planning use had soared in Bangladesh, Malawi and Rwanda, where it had been "de-medicalised" and taken to local communities, and efforts to engage men on the issue had also been made.

The report says providing family planning to everyone who wants and needs it would cost US$7 billion a year, while providing universal education up to the age of 16 would cost US$34-69 billion a year.

John Sulston, fellow of the Royal Society and the chair of the report's working group said it was crucial for population to be included on the agenda of the forthcoming Rio+20 Summit in June, noting that population growth, human consumption, and the environment were integrally linked issues.

The report's other recommendations include lifting 1.3 billion people out of absolute poverty, reducing material consumption levels in wealthy and emerging economies, accelerating the search for alternative measures of development beyond gross domestic product (GDP), and tackling the environmental impact of urbanisation.

Hugh Grant: Yes, Fatherhood Is Life-Changing After All

Just last month, Hugh Grant didn’t seem entirely sure about whether fatherhood had changed him. Now, he’s willing to concede it has indeed.

“Everyone was right all these years, saying, ‘Hugh, why don’t you have some children? It changes your life,’ ” the actor, 51, and dad to 6-month-old daughter Tabitha, says in an interview Friday on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“Now that I have [a child], it is life changing,” he says. “I recommend it. Get some!”

Tabitha’s mother is Grant’s ex Tinglan Hong, who is Chinese. In Friday’s interview, Grant reveals that one of Tabitha’s other names is Jīngxǐ, which, he explains, has something to do with how she was conceived.

“I can’t pretend it wasn’t a little bit of a surprise,” Grant, who stars in the new film Pirates! Band of Misfits, says. “But it’s a very nice surprise. In fact, the baby’s name in Chinese, because the mother is Chinese, means ‘Happy Surprise.’ “

A Parent’s Review:  Youth Theatre Northwest’s ‘A Wrinkle in Time’

“I love you, Charles Wallace.” That statement is not only a quote from the play, but also the audience’s reaction to Sophie Kelly-Hedrick’s portrayal of Charles Wallace in Youth Theatre Northwest’s A Wrinkle in Time. Kelly-Hedrick, a spunky 11-year-old with quite the acting chops, stole the show.

A Wrinkle in Time is based on the classic book of the same title. The story is one of science fiction, fantasy and the triumph of love. Although my kids are well versed in the classics, this was one that we somehow skipped. I was delighted to have a chance to share it with my 8-year-old daughter, who was equally entranced by the story.

Youth Theatre Northwest on Mercer Island is quite the little gem. Despite having lived in Seattle for over a decade, this was my first trip to the little theater. It is downright charming, and free parking for a theater show nearly had me giddy. The theater not only boasts three to four productions per year, it is also home to drama classes and camps for kids ages 3 to 18. If your little one has caught the acting bug, this theater is well worth a second look.

One of the best features of the show is the two rows of open or floor seating for children up front. I was surprised that my daughter chose to move up to this area after intermission since she didn’t know anyone else there. Being so close to the action was a special treat for her and much more magical that peering over the tops of heads. The only downside is that the other seats are reserved, so unless your child is brave enough to sit up front alone or you bring a friend, he or she may not venture up front.

Classics are classics for a reason: the story of A Wrinkle in Time continues to be as endearing as ever. As a parent of a young girl, I am always thrilled to find a book or show with a female protagonist. The character Meg brings so much to the table. She is full of self-doubt, feels different from everyone else, and just plain has trouble fitting in. Through the course of her adventures, she learns that being different isn’t a bad thing, but that our individual characteristics are what make us who we are. Best of all, her triumph comes not from physical strength, beauty, intelligence or even wit; she wins the day due to the power of love. That is a message any child can emulate.

The play is recommended for ages 8 and up. That assessment is right on target. The concept of a wrinkle in time being used to allow travel to far-off planets is a tricky topic. I’m not sure my daughter fully understood the concept, but I am sure she fully enjoyed the play (it runs about an hour and a half with an intermission). This show was one of the first my daughter has seen that didn’t include music. Surprisingly, she didn’t seem to miss it. Her favorite part was watching the various inhabitants of Camazotz perform repetitive, robotic-like motions. She was enthralled with the concept of becoming part of the “It” and has been practicing her own robotic voice.

The presentation of the show celebrates the 50th anniversary of the book by Madeleine L' Engle with an adaptation by James Sie. The show is directed by Kate Swenson, artist in residence at Youth Theatre Northwest. A crew of professionals provides services ranging from costumes to sets to sound. The actors are the only kids in the production, and they certainly hold up their end of the bargain.

The only possible weak link in the whole show is maintaining a balance between sound effects and the actors’ voices. Some of the kids are more versed in projecting than others, and occasionally the cool sci-fi sounds (that drone constantly when you are on a distant planet) would overpower some of the dialogue. Luckily, the theater is small enough that it was not a big factor, and perhaps opening night jitters accounted for some of the soft-spokenness.

A Wrinkle in Time is a great opportunity to introduce your child to the world of science fiction beyond Star Wars, and perhaps even to the possibilities of participating in theater. There’s no doubt about it:  kids love watching other kids. I know my daughter was envisioning herself up on that stage, and perhaps yours will too. The show runs through May 6th.

Ethiopia: Meles Vests Honorary Citizenship on Dr. Catherine Hamlin

Addis Ababa — Prime Minister Meles Zenawi vested an honorary citizenship of Ethiopia on Founder and Owner of the Fistula Hospital, Dr Catherine Hamlin in recognition of her outstanding humanitarian services she provided to fistula patients.

Prime Minister Meles vested the honorary citizenship at a ceremony held here on Thursday at the Office of the Prime Minister.

Meles said Dr. Hamlin was awarded the citizenship for serving the fistula patients for more than five decades by establishing a fistula hospital in the country.Meles gave Ethiopian passport and certificate of honorary citizenship during the ceremony.

He said Dr. Hamlin has been able to rescue thousands of fistula patients which is very much commendable.

Speaking on his part, Health Minister Dr. Tewdrso Adhanom said Dr. Hamlin has served Ethiopians for more than 53 years which he said shows her love to Ethiopia.

Speaking on her part, Dr. Hamlin said "Although I was not born in Ethiopia, I love the country very much."

She said she was very happy to be given the honorary citizenship in recognition of her humanitarian services.

Dr Catherine Hamlin, née Nicholson, was born in Sydney Australia and graduated from the University of Sydney in 1946. She met and married Dr Reginald Hamlin, a New Zealander, when they were both Senior Medical Administrators at Crown Street Women's Hospital, Sydney.

In 1958 they answered an advertisement in the Lancet Medical Journal for an obstetrician and gynaecologist to establish a Midwifery School at the Princess Tsehay Hospital in Addis Ababa. They arrived in Addis Ababa in 1959 on a three year contract with the Ethiopian Government.

They began working in the hospital and training midwives. However, after a short while the Ethiopian Government advised the Hamlins that it would not be able to afford to pay the higher salaries of the trained midwives. Only about 10 midwives had been trained before the the Government closed the midwifery school.

Finally, in 1974 during the Communist Revolution which overthrew Emperor Haile Selassie, the Hamlins opened the doors of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital. It remains the only hospital in the world dedicated exclusively to fistula repair.

More than 35,000 women suffering from obstetric fistula were treated and cured so far.

The Hamlin College of Midwives took its first batch of students at the end of 2007.

Meanwhile, the commercial Bank of Ethiopia donated 500,000 Birr for the Hamline Fistula Hospital here on Thursday on the occasion organized to celebrate the citizenship presentation at Desta Mender, a village farm built by the Hospital.

Desta Mender is a village where women who have suffered injuries which require long term medical care can live and learn life skills such as literacy, numeracy, agriculture, horticulture and dairying was opened in 2003.

Then, before scoring a 10 on the Apgar test, she will be placed on my chest for a bout of peaceful bonding, where she will sleep soundly, enjoying her new time with her mom and dad. And we'll all live happily ever after. The end. However, I realize that visions and/or "plans" when giving birth are laughable. You need to be able to roll with the punches. You need to be ready for your 15-minute-old daughter to flip you off.

Ladies and gentlemen, without further ado, I present to you the gorgeous, angelic, beautiful newborn girl ... who casually gave her father the finger just moments after being born. Seriously, this is the funniest thing you will see all day. Check it out.

And there you have it, folks. We can all go home now. There won't be anything better on the Internet today.

How hilarious is this? Was your birth as you envisioned it to be?

Author Rachel Simmons Helps Parents Battle Bullying

As the author of Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls, Rachel Simmons knows a thing or two about bullying, and now she’s partnering with Secret Deodorant to help parents get educated on the subject, and combat it.

“Many children resist telling their parents when they’re being bullied, so it’s important to look for more subtle signs,” she tells PEOPLE.

“Does your previously phone and computer-addicted child no longer want to be online or texting? Does he not want to go to school? Children may also begin talking about themselves negatively or start lashing out at you or their siblings.”

If it seems that your child has been targeted, Simmons advises approaching the topic from the point of view of the victim.

“Remember to empathize with his experience,” she says. “It takes enormous courage to walk the halls of a school every day where you don’t feel safe. Recognize and honor that; it will mean the world to your child.”

Secondly, give your children the time and opportunity to think of what to do next.

“Ask your child what he wants to do about it,” Simmons says. “This is an opportunity for your child to think through his options and practice thinking about his strategies. If you do all the work for him, he will not learn how to respond to stress on his own.”

In addition to addressing personal bullying, Simmons also encourages parents to teach their children how to stand up for others.

“Telling isn’t tattling; it’s reporting a problem to help someone in need,” she says. “When we don’t stand up in the face of bullying, we ultimately endorse the behavior. You can communicate this to your child. Strength in numbers also always helps. Try to get a friend to be an ally and stand up together.”

Ultimately, the best way to bring about an end to bullying, be it something personally experienced or happening to someone you know, is simply for children to realize it’s best to not participate.

“You can make your world safer right now by gossiping for good,” Simmons says. “Nice is contagious. Pass it on.”

Kenya: Alcohol Linked to Declining Birth Rate in Central

An NGO has claimed the birth rate in Central Kenya is on the decline as a result of alcoholism.

The National Council on Women and Youth executive Mary Kirika said over-indulgence in alcohol has seen birth rates decline. She told a women's meeting at Kirigiti in Kiambu that alcohol laced with chemicals has affected men's reproductive behaviour.

"It is shocking that the liquors being sold to our children is not inspected and has toxic chemicals," said Kirika. Kirika said she has talked to the young men to address the problem.

"I have been talking to people in the grassroots and the women are ready to make families. However, the men are the problem as they cannot reproduce due to the effects of alcohol,"said Kirika. Kirika said illicit liquor packaged in plastics is still being sold in the area.

"I talked to a few men who told me that once you drink the liquor, they become weak and it affects their performance," said Kirika. "Our fathers also used to drink and they had many children. Nowadays the liquors are bad as men are not even interested in women and that is why kikuyu women are being married by other communities and this problem is seen in central province more so kiambu county is the worst hit,"said Kirika

Kirika however called upon the Kenya bureau of standards to be checking on what is put on those drinks and asked local leaders to team up with the authorities to help save central province from consuming killer brews.

April is Autism Month; New Studies Look for Causes

Blog

by Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff, Executive Director & CEO, Healthy Child Healthy World

On the heels of last week’s CDC report that found higher rates of autism than ever before—now affecting 1 in 88 children and representing a 78% increase in the last 10 years—a new study published last week in the journal Clinical Epigenetics is especially interesting. The study looked at how substances such as high fructose corn syrup can lead to mineral deficiencies, how deficiencies in minerals such as zinc can reduce the body’s ability to eliminate toxic substances such as mercury and pesticides, which have been linked to autism.

Another study, published in the journal Pediatrics, found that obesity during pregnancy may increase a woman’s chances of giving birth to a child with autism—by about 67 percent. When asked about theories linking obesity and autism, the study’s author told The Washington Post that excess blood sugar and inflammation-related substances in the mother’s blood may damage the fetal brain.

Dioxin Drama Continues

After last month’s 21-year delayed EPA assessment of dioxin as not posing a “significant health risk,” last weeks news that the EPA has withdrawn clean up guidelines for the substance alarmed activists who warn that without guidelines, cleanup levels will vary from state to state.

Nail Polish Labeling Lies

Pregnant moms should be especially conscious of a new Department of Toxic Substances Control reporter published last week that found nail polishes labeled as “big-three free” actually contained high levels of chemicals toluene, formaldehyde and DBP which have been linked to birth defects, asthma and other illnesses, according to the Washington Post. Yet another reason to support the Safe Cosmetics Act, which would finally—finally!—establish regulation for the currently self-regulating $50 billion personal care industry. Send a message to Congress in support of the Safe Cosmetics Act!

Can Carcinogens Be Free & Gentle?

Even after more than 74,000 consumers signed a petition asking Tide to remove the carcinogenic 1,4 dioxane from its’ Free & Gentle line of laundry detergents marketed to newborns, Procter & Gamble still has not responded. We stepped up pressure by working with Women’s Voices for the Earth to organize a Social Media Day of Action on Friday, in which 307 people posted messages on Tide’s Facebook wall with the message to get the cancer-causing chemical out of their detergent; we’ll deliver a letter to the company today, signed by groups including Breast Cancer Fund, Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments, and Health Care Without Harm. Meanwhile, we’re just about 500 signatures away from our goal of 75,000. Have you signed on yet?

Party Week Deadline

This community is inspired! More than 3,000 participants have signed on to be part of National Healthy Child Party Week May 5-12. Today is the LAST day to order a kit in time for the week. But the story’s not over: We’re making more kits so that 5,000 can participate in the month of May. Please join us in hosting a party that will change the world!

Earth Day Expands

Three cheers for Earth Day! The April 22nd celebration that became official in the U.S. in 1970 is now celebrated by 175 countries, according to Hudson Valley Magazine. How will you celebrate?

The National Film Festival for Talented Youth Hits Seattle This Weekend

NFFTY (pronounced “Nifty”), which stands for National Film Festival for Talented Youth, is the largest youth film festival in the world, and we get to host it here in Seattle, April 26 through 29 at Seattle Center. On showcase will be some of the best young directors ages 22 and younger from around the world, including a great deal of local talent.

The films of NFFTY represent the voice of this generation, covering topics and genres from compelling and provocative, to hilarious and uplifting. This year, NFFTY is partnering with The Next Fifty to add the Future of Film Expo, a free two-day event that's open to the public on Friday, April 27, and Saturday, April 28. The Expo will have film-focused panels, workshops and exhibitors, including a Film 101 booth that is a great introduction for families.

If you'd like to take in a film, try the "Bring the Kids" screening, an event designated for families with young children. Some of the other screenings might have content that is over the heads of younger kids, depending on the age, so be sure to check out the website ahead of time. The festival will also have free "pedicabs" giving people rides between SIFF Cinema and the Expo, which is fun for kids.

Alessandra Ambrosio's Nude Pregnancy Photo Is Beyond Perfect

alessandra ambrosioVictoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio may be pregnant with her second child, but a baby bump really hasn't altered her model good looks one bit. (So unfair!) Actually, other than her growing belly, she really doesn't look much different than she normally does -- even when she's completely nude. (If only the rest of us were so lucky.)

She shared this photo on her Facebook page of the new ad campaign she shot for Vivara, a jewelry company in Brazil. OMG. How incredible does this girl look naked?! She doesn't have one lump or bump anywhere in sight, and nothing looks stretched out or saggy either. This is about as picture perfect as pregnancy gets -- and most of us can only dream of looking this gorgeous in the buff while eating for two. Her shot makes being knocked up look like a piece of cake, doesn't it?

When I was expecting my son, I couldn't stand the sight of my nude body in the mirror. My skin was stretched out to the max, I was swollen and bloated, and honestly, I barely resembled my pre-baby self at all. I looked like some sort of alien -- or at times, the Michelin man. It's a good thing that I'm a regular mom who isn't remotely famous, because I wouldn't have wanted to even think about posing nude for a magazine ad during that time (or at any point in my life for that matter). It was bad enough that I had to see my body that way, let alone the eyes of the general public.

Of course, if I looked as svelte and sexy pregnant as Alessandra Ambrosio, I definitely would have considered stripping down for the cameras. Who wouldn't want to show off that rockin' bod? Putting your pregnant, naked self out there for the world to see must be a whole lot easier when you have supermodel genes supporting you -- or at least that's my assumption.

Have you looked like "yourself" throughout your pregnancy, or has your appearance changed completely?
