Kenya: Laikipia Girl Dies in Botched Abortion

A 19-year-old secondary school girl in Male village in Laikipia Central district has died in what is suspected be an attempt to procure an abortion. Carol Wanja Wanyaga, a form three student at Tigithi Mixed Secondary School died on the way to a local dispensary where she had been rushed for treatment.

Assistant chief Patrick Mathenge said it has not been established what the teenage was procuring an abortion. "There are conflicting reports with parents saying that it was a miscarriage, an allegation which ought to be verified by a medical practitioner," said the administrator. Yesterday, district police commander Joshua Lutukai ordered thorough investigations into the matter.

Meanwhile, a body of a 50-year-old man who drowned four days ago in Kihato village has been retrieved. James Mwangi's body was retrieved from Tigithi River by police officers and villagers. Officer commanding police division Joshua Lutukai said Mwangi drowned on the way home from Naromoru trading center. "It is suspected that he had taken some few beers before he met his death" Lutukai said. And in the neighbouring Kamangura village, a body of a middle aged man was found lying dead on the road side.

The unidentified body was found by school going children who informed their parents. Police said the man who is said to be mentally unstable died due to unknown reasons. The body was removed to Nanyuki district hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
