Free Talk: “Early Learning: Do We Need It? The Science of Baby Brain Development”

Did you know that 85 percent of a child’s brain development happens before they turn 5 years old? Parents naturally want to give their young children every advantage possible when it comes to preparing them for successful, healthy lives, but how? Get ideas during the free parent talk: "Early Learning: Do we need it? The science of baby brain development," which will be held on Thursday, June 7, at 7 p.m. at Educare in White Center (625 S.W. 100th St. in Seattle).

Quality, affordable preschool is increasingly harder to find. In Washington, only 40 percent of 3- and 4-year-olds attend some kind of pre-kindergarten program. Research tells us that early learning programs are critical. They put young minds on the path for academic success and increase upward mobility. Kids with access to high-quality programs are more likely to graduate high school, hold higher wage jobs and commit fewer crimes in their lifetime.

Join the League of Education Voters, University of Washington’s Institute for Learning and Brain Science and MomsRising.org for an evening of education and advocacy. Guest speakers will be Hannah Lidman, Director of the Translation, Outreach & Education division at the Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences, and Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Momsrising.org, also an author, freelance journalist and consultant in the field of environmental policy and political strategy. Learn more about the science of brain development and what you can do to be an advocate for your child.

Free childcare will be provided for the first 40 parents that register. Please include how many children will need care and what their ages are in your email. Questions? Contact maggie@educationvoters.org. To learn more about this event, and to pre-register, visit the League of Education Voters website
