The World's Most Hilarious Birth Plan

Birth Plan

There is a hilarious link floating around to a birth plan entitled: Jamie and Jeff's Birth Plan. It's totally tongue in cheek, but absolutely hilarious at the same time. I'm sure that there are some labor and delivery nurses who have read things that probably sound very close to that one.

So what should your birth plan say? Well, that depends on what you want, where you're planning to give birth and some other things. Though, I can tell you what a birth plan is not:

  • a contract
  • only for people who are planning a home birth
  • only for people who are planning a hospital birth
  • only for people who want an unmedicated birth
  • only for people planning for an epidural

The whole point of a birth plan is to open up communications with your practitioners and the people who are with you when you give birth. Sometimes circumstances dictate that writing your thoughts down make it easiest to communicate it to people with you and other times writing it down is purely for you as a way to solidify your thoughts.

7 Tips to Keep Snooki From Turning Into a Meatball Mama (VIDEO)

SnookiAs much as we all know how important it is to stay active during pregnancy, it really isn't all that easy to get motivated sometimes. And if anyone knows just how tempting it is to lounge around all day and be somewhat sedentary during those long nine months, it's definitely Snooki.

But then again, she is spending a decent amount of her pregnancy filming scenes for Jersey Shore -- which isn't exactly a favorable environment for getting up and moving.

If I'd been living at the beach when I was pregnant, I probably wouldn't have bothered to get up off my lounge chair either. In fact, I can see how that would make it about 10 times harder to gain any sort of motivation at all.

As you will see in the video below, however, staying fit is important to Snooki, and even JWoww has agreed to help her out with her pregnancy workouts.

She doesn't exactly seem thrilled about getting started with a fitness program, but maybe if she takes a few of these tips to heart -- she'll be motivated in no time.

More from The Stir: A-List Celebs Ready to Join 'Jersey Shore' Cast

1. Ditch the scooter -- As long Snooki has that darn scooter to ride around on, she will have no incentive to walk anywhere. She needs to get rid of it all together, and then she'll have no choice but to get moving.

2. Follow JWoww everywhere -- JWoww is a total gym rat, and if Snooki just makes it a point to hang with her every single day, she'll be forced to do a few exercises at the gym.

3. Hit the beach -- Seeing a bunch of super-tan "guidettes" sunning themselves in tiny bikinis is enough to make any girl want to hop on the treadmill -- pregnant or not.

4. Go clubbing every night -- The rest of the Jersey Shore gang would probably love to have Snooki hit the club with them, even if she can't get sloppy and drunk. But she can do one thing with all of them -- let loose on the dance floor. This way she can have some fun and get more motivated to stay in shape.

5. Avoid Sunday dinners -- I know the whole crew likes to get together for big Italian-style dinners every Sunday, but maybe it would be best for Snooki to sit them out for the remainder of her pregnancy, or at least bring her own meal. Nothing makes you feel like more of a couch potato than a fat plate of spaghetti & meatballs.

6. Do a little shopping -- Snooki recently said she doesn't plan on wearing maternity clothes during her pregnancy. Checking out the cute summer styles in the beach side boutiques may be just what she needs to keep her pregnancy weight gain in check.

7. Hang out with Sammi & Ronnie -- If Snooki really wants an extra kick to get out of the house and take a walk, all she needs to do is challenge herself to sit in a room with Ronnie & Sammi for five minutes. She'll be running out the door as fast as she can in no time flat. (No one can take that amount of torture.)

What other tips can you offer Snooki to help motivate her to work out?

April is Autism Month; New Studies Look for Causes

Blog

by Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff, Executive Director & CEO, Healthy Child Healthy World

On the heels of last week’s CDC report that found higher rates of autism than ever before—now affecting 1 in 88 children and representing a 78% increase in the last 10 years—a new study published last week in the journal Clinical Epigenetics is especially interesting. The study looked at how substances such as high fructose corn syrup can lead to mineral deficiencies, how deficiencies in minerals such as zinc can reduce the body’s ability to eliminate toxic substances such as mercury and pesticides, which have been linked to autism.

Another study, published in the journal Pediatrics, found that obesity during pregnancy may increase a woman’s chances of giving birth to a child with autism—by about 67 percent. When asked about theories linking obesity and autism, the study’s author told The Washington Post that excess blood sugar and inflammation-related substances in the mother’s blood may damage the fetal brain.

Dioxin Drama Continues

After last month’s 21-year delayed EPA assessment of dioxin as not posing a “significant health risk,” last weeks news that the EPA has withdrawn clean up guidelines for the substance alarmed activists who warn that without guidelines, cleanup levels will vary from state to state.

Nail Polish Labeling Lies

Pregnant moms should be especially conscious of a new Department of Toxic Substances Control reporter published last week that found nail polishes labeled as “big-three free” actually contained high levels of chemicals toluene, formaldehyde and DBP which have been linked to birth defects, asthma and other illnesses, according to the Washington Post. Yet another reason to support the Safe Cosmetics Act, which would finally—finally!—establish regulation for the currently self-regulating $50 billion personal care industry. Send a message to Congress in support of the Safe Cosmetics Act!

Can Carcinogens Be Free & Gentle?

Even after more than 74,000 consumers signed a petition asking Tide to remove the carcinogenic 1,4 dioxane from its’ Free & Gentle line of laundry detergents marketed to newborns, Procter & Gamble still has not responded. We stepped up pressure by working with Women’s Voices for the Earth to organize a Social Media Day of Action on Friday, in which 307 people posted messages on Tide’s Facebook wall with the message to get the cancer-causing chemical out of their detergent; we’ll deliver a letter to the company today, signed by groups including Breast Cancer Fund, Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments, and Health Care Without Harm. Meanwhile, we’re just about 500 signatures away from our goal of 75,000. Have you signed on yet?

Party Week Deadline

This community is inspired! More than 3,000 participants have signed on to be part of National Healthy Child Party Week May 5-12. Today is the LAST day to order a kit in time for the week. But the story’s not over: We’re making more kits so that 5,000 can participate in the month of May. Please join us in hosting a party that will change the world!

Earth Day Expands

Three cheers for Earth Day! The April 22nd celebration that became official in the U.S. in 1970 is now celebrated by 175 countries, according to Hudson Valley Magazine. How will you celebrate?

Mini Must-Have: Harper Smith’s Pretty Pajamas

It’s a pint-sized pajama party! And for Harper Renn Smith, it was the perfect time to pull out her luxe loungewear.

Stepping out with mom Tiffani Thiessen for the Baby Buggy Bedtime Bash on June 6 in New York City, the 2-year-old looked oh-so-cute — and comfy! — in a striped sleeper set.

After a little searching through the (virtual!) racks, we discovered Harper is wearing Skylar Luna‘s Pink/Gray Long Sleeves Pajamas ($39).

No wonder it’s her nighttime favorite: The eco-friendly clothes are not only adorable, they’re also crafted from the softest organic cotton.

Who wouldn’t want to head to bed in such comfy attire?

What is a Sacred Pregnancy?

Blog

by Anni Daulter, Author of Sacred Pregnancy

When I was pregnant with my second child, Lotus, I became obsessed with trying to find women I could connect with that knew about the sacredness of birth and the rite of passage process that every mother goes through, but few mark. My pregnancy craving was for that sisterhood that used to exist back in the day when women lived in tribes and pregnancy wisdom was passed down from mother to mother. Not being able to find what I was truly looking for, I realized something was missing in how we go through our pregnancies in this culture, and that sacred mother sisterhood had been buried, not lost, but buried deep in the past and needed to re-surge for all women. Our bodies create babies, and everyone agrees that is a miraculous wonder, but our spirits create souls and we need to know how to handle the process of creating a “whole” person. I truly believe the way to do this is by connecting to ourselves, the process of growing a baby and other wise women.

Pregnancy is a ride and we need to dig deep in order to navigate the emotional and physical waters of that journey. Its wild, scary, fun, joyous, beautiful, sexy, dirty, bloody and most of all it shapes us into mothers and re-defines how we look at the world. Every woman DESERVES a Sacred Pregnancy, because it’s her birth-right and it’s our most sacred work that we will ever do. A Sacred Pregnancy is one that is honored and shaped with intention, purpose and celebration. We need to go back to the Kiva and sit with our women tribes and be held with their empowerment, get showered with adornment and learn more ways how to say “YES” to nurturing ourselves. We need to decorate our bellies and let it all hang out, honor our partners as they too travel the road with us, be brave and vulnerable, look into the eyes of our own childhoods so we may pick and choose what we want to take with us into our own mothering choices and most importantly we need to learn that this is a journey we share with others, but ultimately travel alone.

A Sacred Pregnancy is a gift you give yourself and your baby and one that is unique to every single pregnancy and birthing experience. It’s where, if you let it happen, you become one of the wise women with a blessed sisterhood knowledge that one day you will give to maidens. Hold that power with a delicate hand and when the time is right you will know how to pass it on.

I am honored, humbled and just tickled pink that I have been given the opportunity to write Sacred Pregnancy and that folks are responding so well to it. I hope that each of you finds your way into the book, the website and the community. The Sacred Pregnancy movement has so much planned and we hope that you are all there to share it with us.

In gratitude,

Anni Daulter

Note: We have just launched Sacred Pregnancy site, the book is ready for pre-order now, and is being released on May 1st, 2012. Coming soon is a never before done sacred hand-picked shop, a campaign called “if your showin’ you should be glowin’", magazine editions of Sacred Pregnancy and of course Sacred Pregnancy Pregnancy + Birthing Class Series. So stay tuned and enjoy the journey.

Scared to take a pregnancy test?

Pregnancy Test, Cake Pop, Hot Chocolate

I was answering my email the other day and someone wrote me to ask if I thought she was pregnant. I get many such emails every day, and my answer is usually the same, "If you think you're pregnant, take a pregnancy test." This woman wrote back quickly, "But I'm afraid to take a pregnancy test..."

That's when it struck me, aren't we all at some level afraid to take a pregnancy test? Whether you're looking for a positive or a negative, there is that place before you truly know the answer that the plastic test stick provides that allows you to be in your quiet, but happy place. It's a time where you can dream of the perfect pregnancy and lovely baby, or erase birth control failures and the like. That is, until you take that test. Then you are catapulted into reality, which is sometimes exactly what you had hoped and dreamed for and sometimes not.

How did you feel before you took your pregnancy test?

Fake a tan while protecting yourself from a real one

Fake a tan while protecting yourself from a real one

Supergoop self-tanning sunscreen Just because I want to avoid the sun, doesn't mean I want to spend my summer looking like a ghost. I know I'm not alone, which is why self-tanners have become so popular. And now, I've found the perfect beauty product that gives me a gorgeous fake bake, while protecting my skin from the rays.

The new SPF 20 Gradual Self Tanning Sunscreen Mousse from Supergoop leaves an ever-so-slight kiss of golden color while saving your skin from sun damage. Pretty genius.

I used this self tanner/sunscreen for one week straight and was thrilled to step out looking like I had just returned from vacation in St. Tropez. The irony? My skin was probably paler than normal because I'd been dousing it from head to toe to make sure I didn't miss a spot. So I can vouch for the efficacy of the SPF.

My biggest complaint with self-tanners is the nasty smell factor. This one does skip the stench, and instead is lightly scented with a nondescript green tea and cucumber fragrance. However I'm not a huge fan of chemical sunscreens; I prefer minerals that do not get absorbed into the skin. Supergoop uses chemicals in the formula, but I'm glad it's free of parabens and the more questionable oxybenzone chemical.

If it were up to me, I'd spend my entire summer under a tree or an umbrella. But with two little boys to chase around at the beach and splash around with in the pool, what a very clever alternative. -Melissa

SPF 20 Gradual Self Tanning Sunscreen Mousse is $38 at Supergoop.com.

Dads Catching Babies

Daddy Catching New Baby

Move over cutting the cord! Dads have come a long way since the days of the waiting room. While women used to fight to have a significant other present, now the hospital doors have been flung open wide to accept others, albeit with some limits in some settings. One thing I'm seeing more of when I work as a doula in the hospital, is family members, like dad or partner, catching the baby.

I started seeing this at home births, in fact, it was a fairly common occurrence. I personally never thought it would fly in the hospital environment. (Though I've been working in hospital birth long enough so that I remember when every vaginal birth saw everyone draped and dressed!)Though I'm delighted to report that many of the hospitals and practitioners are doing this in my area.

The families who choose to do this are very happy and excited about their choices. Have you ever considered having someone assist your practitioner in catching the baby?

Summer sights from your child's room, even with the blinds down.

Summer sights from your child's room, even with the blinds down.

Popsicle photo - SUN-drenched photographyEvery summer for the past few years, my entire family makes a pilgrimage to the Jersey shore for a week of pure old fashioned beach and boardwalk fun. I spend the other 51 weeks of the year making solo trips to the beach... in my head. But thanks to Meg Venter and her SUN-drenched photography series, I now have a little help getting there.

A short pass through the September Wren Etsy gallery and you'll be wishing you had a brand new beach house to adorn the walls with the entire collection. In reality, I am thinking a few of these prints scattered in the kitchen or bathroom could keep us in the relaxed mindset of the warm summer months during the off season. Also, the super playful carnival photographs would be completely adorable to brighten up a child's room or playroom.
Have we have finally found the cure for the summer time blues? I think so. -Stephanie M

Moms & Babies - People.com

Sean Smith

Elisabeth Röhm, best known for her roles as Serena on Law & Order and Kate on Angel, has been blogging for PEOPLE.com for over a year now.

The actress, 39, currently stars as Taylor on The Client List, while her film Transit is out now, with Officer Down following later this year.

She can be found on Facebook, Google + and @ElisabethRohm.

In her latest blog, Röhm — mom to 4-year-old Easton August with fiancé Ron Anthony — reflects on their family’s upcoming move and visits her childhood home.

Have you ever gone back to poke around a house you used to live in? Share your experience in the comments.

It’s a sentimental time for our family right now. Not only is it almost the Fourth of July, which always makes me reflect on family, tradition and the freedom we are so blessed with in this country but it’s also the end of a chapter for my small clan.

I don’t know why I always feel like the Fourth of July marks closure and a new beginning but somehow it annually makes me pause and think of all that we have done this year to celebrate our lives and all that we could do better. It’s certainly a time of year that makes you think of your life with gratitude and hope; looking forward towards possibility.

Change is happening in our family. Change can be good and yet it brings up so many feelings and memories of the past. So it goes, when you move homes. At the end of this month, we are moving and just like the culmination of our nation’s big celebration, our family is excited about our next chapter and all our hopes for the coming year. We are celebrating!

Yet, with this new chapter comes the emotion of goodbye. We loved the little house that we made our family in. It’s the place where all of our dreams for a stable, loving home took root. It’s the home where Easton was delivered like a bundle of joy from the heavens and the hospital, where we spent those sleepless nights caring for her, where I wandered the halls like an intoxicated love-slave of my child’s every need, the place where we tried our first Pampers and grew to understand the art of the diaper, the emotion of breastfeeding, bottle-transitioning and sleep training.

Within these walls I learned to love profoundly and accept the tenderness of a family unit. With Easton we all went from crawling to those first steps of freedom, which were so exciting to watch. We saw the change from goo-goo ga-ga to first words and now to an expressive articulate child who loves to talk, as well as the bold shift from crib to bed. Now I have a little girl instead of a baby.

Oh, how the time has flown. I don’t know how we will leave this house behind, actually. The new owners might have to cope with me camping out on the front steps from time to time just to get a whiff of our past.

I’m sentimental as it is, but moving has always been tough on me. As much as I look to the future I find I am always attracted to the past much like Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris.

I recall how traumatic each move we made as a child was. Now, I’m not an army brat or anything, but we moved a few times in my childhood and I remember it with agony. It’s such a huge adjustment. My poor mother had to always explain that it was for the betterment of our lives and yet I was attached to what I knew.

Still to this day I feel a deep connection to the home we lived in from the time I was five to 14. Even recently I drove by and did that, ‘Hi, I grew up here … mind if I take a look around?’ thing that so many of us do.

It stirred up so much of the longings of youth, my parents’ divorce and the heartache that went along with it, the bloom of first love, the dogs and cats we had and the many lost afternoons in the woods, not to mention my little cabin was still there — with cobwebs and a chipping roof — yet intact. (I delighted knowing that other children had found their own personal freedom in the world of imagination in that little log cabin of mine.)

I wandered the backyard and inhaled those years of my childhood. Especially since my mother passed away suddenly two years ago, it brought a closure that I didn’t anticipate through visiting the home we had shared together, the place I had grown up and experienced many of my greatest transitions.

Like Miranda Lambert‘s song, “The House That Built Me” suggests, we connect to each other and ourselves through the homes we have, the rooms we live in and the roof that’s over our head. Within those walls is the magic dust of our essence. Somehow, even if we move on to the next chapter, which we always do, we never lose that connection to time or space.

Speaking of the Fourth of July, and reminiscing, I remember loving putting my patriotic pride on display when I was little, especially during those summers when Olympic Games occurred. I was at the store the other day and saw these cool Pampers Limited Edition USA diapers and thought that I would have loved to have outfitted baby Easton in them when she was younger. (For you moms out there with little ones in diapers — they’re so cute and they really let the kiddos show off their team spirit!) I thought it was very cool to share with you this great way incorporating your tiny tots into your upcoming summer celebrations. Oh, I remember it well!

So, on to our new chapter …

I’m sure one day Easton will bring her little girl back to this house that I am writing this blog in and say to her, “I grew up there. Let’s knock and see if they’ll let us take a look around. I’d like to show you where I took my first step, spoke my first words and went from baby to girl.” I know I’ll be coming back sometime soon to visit, to remember and celebrate the experiences we shared in our first family home.

Tell me of your childhood home, PEOPLE.com! Share pictures if you’ve got them. I’d love to see your baby pics and get a glimpse of “the house that built you”!

From our family to yours, with love.

Until next time,

– Elisabeth Röhm

In exchange for a mention in this post, Pampers made a donation to March of Dimes and paid a stipend to Ms. Röhm.

Woodland Park Zoo Mystery Penguin Hero Honored with Chick Naming

Remember the little penguin hero, the boy who spotted an abandoned Humboldt penguin egg at Woodland Park Zoo and alerted a keeper to its need for rescue? Despite a two-month search to locate him and thank him for his effort, he was never found.

Instead of letting his act go unrecognized, even if his identity remains a mystery, zoo staff decided to honor the little hero by naming the penguin chick Ramón, a Spanish name that means “protector.”

Ramón is now two months old and is thriving behind the scenes. His rocky start as an abandoned egg put his survival at peril, but thanks to the little boy’s call for help, penguin keeper Celine Pardo was able to rescue the egg before a crow or gull could snatch it. The egg was given to a pair of foster parents who took it in and successfully hatched it days after the rescue.

The chick is old enough to start some training so he now works with his zookeepers behind the scenes where he’s learning critical behaviors like how to approach keepers for feeding and how to swim in a pool. This is all in preparation for when he joins the colony of penguins in the outdoor exhibit in mid-summer.

Humboldt penguins are an endangered species, so this happy story is made all the happier knowing that quick work from a visitor, zookeeper and foster penguin parents means another conservation ambassador can thrive. To learn more, visit www.zoo.org.

Congratulations Doodle 4 Google State Winner and Finalists

As a supporter of Google's annual “Doodle 4 Google” student design competition, Pacific Science Center is hosting an exhibit featuring the state finalists' artwork, which will be on display through July 22 in the Ackerley Family Exhibit Gallery (accessible after paying regular admission into the Science Center)

Doodle 4 Google invites students across the United States to redesign the company's logo based on a theme for a chance to win a $30,000 college scholarship and $50,000 technology grant for their school.

Congratulations to the state winner and state finalists:

  • State winner: Samantha C., 11, from Kenmore
  • State finalists: Jahnvi M., 10, from Bellevue; Heidi R., 18, from Silverlake; Clara T., 12, from Sammamish; and Kaden D., 7, from Redmond

Doodle 4 Google is one of several efforts by Google to encourage and celebrate the creativity of young people by asking students to create their own Google doodle. The theme this year is, "If I could travel in time, I'd visit..." A team of guest judges, including Katy Perry, Phineas and Ferb creator and executive producer Jeff "Swampy" Marsh, and recording artist Jordin Sparks, helped choose the top doodles.

To learn more about the Pacific Science Center exhibit, visit http://pacificsciencecenter.org/Exhibits/doodle-4-google.

Hot Ticket: Tour a Local Fire Station or Check Out Fire Department Kids Day

Kids love fire trucks. They just do. And you will be a pretty cool parent if you take them to visit your neighborhood fire station. Most fire departments in the region – Seattle, Edmonds, Everett, Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Renton and Kent to name a few – offer public tours as a way to reach out to the community. Parents can even arrange to tour Leschi, the city’s fireboat, with children 9 and older.

Kids will get a close-up look at fire engines and firefighting equipment on their tour, and get a chance to talk with firefighters about their jobs. They will see fire gear demonstrations and check out the digs, and probably leave with some good safety tips. Because firefighters are typically "on the job" during tours, be prepared for the visit to end abruptly if a call comes into the station.

Check out the website of your neighborhood fire department to see if they offer tours and for their specific guidelines. Tours usually have to be prearranged with a fair amount of notice, and there are often age restrictions. Check out the "If You Go" sidebar for some helpful links.

In addition, the King County Fire & Life Safety Association is hosting the 15th annual "King County Fire Department Kids Day at the Museum" on Friday, June 22, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The museum's parking lot will turn into a colorful carnival of big trucks and the friendly firefighters who use them.

Kids of all ages can view (and climb aboard) the fire equipment on display and meet the men and women who always come to the rescue. Smokey the Bear will even pay a visit. Participants include many of the local fire departments and rescue units, and free firefighter caps and badges will be given. Kids will have the opportunity to see how tall an aerial ladder extends and talk with firefighters and department personnel. In addition, the Safety Zone will teach children safety skills while providing adults with life-saving information.

The Museum of Flight is located at 9404 E. Marginal Way S. in Seattle. To learn more about this event, visit www.museumofflight.org.

'32 and Pregnant' Spoof Shows Having a Baby Is Hilariously Hard at Any Age (VIDEO)

32 and pregnantListen up, you pregnant teens with your drama-filled reality shows and mugshot-filled scrapbooks: Pregnant adults have it rough, too! Just take the moms-to-be featured in 32 and Pregnant, a hilarious send-up of 16 and Pregnant from the folks at Punch! Just because these ladies have attentive babydaddies and charming brownstones and fancy appliances doesn't mean they don't have problems.

Just take Bryn, so heartbroken she's lying on the floor and sobbing: "My health insurance won't cover a home birth!"

Oh, the humanity!! What I really love about this parody is how perfectly it captures all those 16 and Pregnant trademarks so perfectly, from camera angles to background music to the drawings-in-a-spiral-bound-notebook theme.

Perfect example? Watch the spat between the couple towards the end of this clip ...

Omg, I totally thought they were going to have a real argument for a second there! That spot-on 16 and Pregnant style nearly fooled me.

I'm soooo dying for this to become an actual series. It would be the funniest thing on TV.

What was your favorite part of 32 and Pregnant?

Tanzania: Pemba Overwhelmed By Pregnancies in Schools

Zanzibar — IN efforts to minimise pregnancies amongst school girls, Zanzibar has introduced awareness campaign in all its schools so that students can avoid getting involved in early sexual relationships; the House was informed on Friday.

Responding to questions from Ms Shadya Mohammed Suleiman (Women), the Minister for Social Welfare, Youths, Children, and Women Development, Ms Zainabu Mohamed, said in the House that the number of pregnancies in schools in Pemba Island is overwhelming.

"We also plan to review our laws with the objective of having a tougher punishment for perpetrators," the minister said as the Attorney General (AG), Othman Masoud Othman, said that even girls who force boys and men into sex will also be prosecuted under the existing laws. Some legislators argue that parents and the community in general have contributed towards moral decay in society.

Breastfeeding and Exercise

Mom Jogging with New Baby in Stroller

A recent study looked at breastfeeding and exercise when it came to how infants grew. The study combined what was already out there and looked at whether or not there were effects on the growth of infants. While it's already known that babies who are breast fed grow differently than babies who are not breast fed, this looked at a mom's activity specifically.

This was a small look at moms and babies and they've proposed more studies, but given the fact that breastfeeding is good for babies and moms and exercise is good for moms, they believe it is completely appropriate to recommend that mothers engage in both, rather than to delay the return to exercise.

What are your plans to exercise after baby?
