Bainbridge Island’s Kids Discovery Museum Celebrates Birthday With Free Admission and Festivities

On Saturday, June 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Kids Discovery Museum (KiDiMu), the children’s museum on Bainbridge Island, will host a "Birthday Bash" to mark the second anniversary in its Island Gateway home, just steps away from the Seattle ferry. The celebration will feature a free-admission day at the museum, free family attractions, entertainment and giveaways.

Local performers from Kitsap and King county, as well as community partners and volunteers will help KiDiMu make the day special for visiting families. To get the party started, at 10 a.m., visitors will enjoy African beats by the youth Motsimoyo Marimba band. The music will continue with sing-along fun presented by a local folk musician David Webb and his guitar.

At noon, Roberto the Magnificent will add some magic to the celebration with his performance, to be followed by the Seattle-based rock-and-roll band The-Not-Its!, who will invite the festive crowd to join in the parking lot dance at 1 p.m. Throughout the day, officers from the Island will make surprise appearances to offer children an up-close look at their police cars and fire trucks.

In addition, local vendors and community partners will offer giveaways, including special treats from Popcorn Chef and Bon Bon Confections (while supplies last). The 122 restaurant will help “power” visiting KiDiMu Explorers by offering snacks for sale, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit KiDiMu. Tasha Vansse Photography will provide a photo booth to help the guests capture their special memory free of charge (additional photos will also be available for sale).

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., families can enjoy complimentary face painting, sidewalk chalk, tattoos and balloons. As a special “party favor,” the museum will invite attendees to enter a drawing for their own birthday celebration at KiDiMu. For more information on the Birthday Bash, visit KiDiMu’s website at www.kidimu.org or call 206-855-4650.

Disney Pixar Summer Movie weekend - $6 movies, whoo!

As much as I'm excited about spending Memorial Day weekend outside with my family, I anticipate we'll need a little break from the pool and the 90 degree heat here in Atlanta. So I'm happy to have this awesome Pixar movie promotion on my radar just in case we need a little rest and relaxation.

Marc Jacobs honors kids with two daddies, or two mommies. And we honor Marc Jacobs.

Marc Jacobs honors kids with two daddies, or two mommies. And we honor Marc Jacobs.

Obviously, we've got Father's Day on the brain lately. Which means we're also thinking about fathers of all kinds. Like single dads. And those dads with a second loving dad at home. Evidently, Marc Jacobs is in the same place. So we're standing up and applauding this beautiful t-shirt he's created for those very kids.

This limited edition organic cotton tee reads If Dad Says No...Ask Dad, and was designed by Jacobs to support the Human Rights Campaign. In fact, a full 100% of the profits go towards the HRC effort towards LGBT equality. (Go, Marc!)

It's a limited edition, with only 200 available, in sizes 12 months to 4T. And for you families with two mommies? There's a tee for your kiddos too.

Marc Jacobs two mommies teeI'm hoping that they sell out, and that next year there are twice as many available. Because let's not forget, there's a second group who benefits from these tees: kids who deserve to grow up feeling blessed to have loving parents and caregivers, whoever they might be.

Besides, it's kind of nice to know that kids can be equal opportunity manipulators.  -Liz

Know-It-All Gisele Bundchen's Pregnancy Could Be Bad News for Moms

gisele bundchenIt's a well known fact that she's the world's most perfect mother, so it's definitely not a shock that reports are popping up saying Gisele Bundchen is pregnant with baby number two. And if she is indeed expecting her second child with husband Tom Brady, all I can say is, "It's about time!"

Considering Gisele had the whole parenting thing figured out about 10 seconds after she delivered her son Benjamin, I'm surprised they waited this long to have another baby. She definitely has all the answers for how to bring up children, so it totally makes sense that she and Tom would want to go ahead and expand their brood and populate the world with a future generation of know-it-alls. (Am I being a bit too harsh? Nah!)

Fashion designers apparently noticed a change in her body while dressing her for various events, which sparked the initial baby bump rumors. Supposedly Gisele has shared the big news with family and close friends, and is expected to make a public announcement fairly soon. This photo of her was taken on May 7, and she wasn't showing any signs of a growing belly. But then again, she is Gisele, so it will probably take a bit longer for her body to swell.

A pregnancy is always a miracle, so part of me is truly happy for Gisele if she's pregnant. But I can't help but wonder what sorts of judgy statements are going to come out of her mouth now that she's experiencing pregnancy for a second time.

Remember the whole "pregnant women who gain a lot of weight are nothing but garbage disposals" thing? Yeah -- I'm not sure that I'll ever quite get over that one. It was insensitive, completely inaccurate, and downright mean.

And how about her declaration that mandatory breastfeeding should be a law? Way to stick it to formula feeding moms and make them feel like they're committing some sort of a crime.

Hopefully Gisele has learned from her past mistakes and will keep her mouth shut (for the most part) this time if she is pregnant. If she lays low and refrains from making any judgemental statements about other moms, she may even have a chance of redeeming herself this time around.

Do you think Gisele has a bit of a pregnancy glow going on?

What is a Sacred Pregnancy?

Blog

by Anni Daulter, Author of Sacred Pregnancy

When I was pregnant with my second child, Lotus, I became obsessed with trying to find women I could connect with that knew about the sacredness of birth and the rite of passage process that every mother goes through, but few mark. My pregnancy craving was for that sisterhood that used to exist back in the day when women lived in tribes and pregnancy wisdom was passed down from mother to mother. Not being able to find what I was truly looking for, I realized something was missing in how we go through our pregnancies in this culture, and that sacred mother sisterhood had been buried, not lost, but buried deep in the past and needed to re-surge for all women. Our bodies create babies, and everyone agrees that is a miraculous wonder, but our spirits create souls and we need to know how to handle the process of creating a “whole” person. I truly believe the way to do this is by connecting to ourselves, the process of growing a baby and other wise women.

Pregnancy is a ride and we need to dig deep in order to navigate the emotional and physical waters of that journey. Its wild, scary, fun, joyous, beautiful, sexy, dirty, bloody and most of all it shapes us into mothers and re-defines how we look at the world. Every woman DESERVES a Sacred Pregnancy, because it’s her birth-right and it’s our most sacred work that we will ever do. A Sacred Pregnancy is one that is honored and shaped with intention, purpose and celebration. We need to go back to the Kiva and sit with our women tribes and be held with their empowerment, get showered with adornment and learn more ways how to say “YES” to nurturing ourselves. We need to decorate our bellies and let it all hang out, honor our partners as they too travel the road with us, be brave and vulnerable, look into the eyes of our own childhoods so we may pick and choose what we want to take with us into our own mothering choices and most importantly we need to learn that this is a journey we share with others, but ultimately travel alone.

A Sacred Pregnancy is a gift you give yourself and your baby and one that is unique to every single pregnancy and birthing experience. It’s where, if you let it happen, you become one of the wise women with a blessed sisterhood knowledge that one day you will give to maidens. Hold that power with a delicate hand and when the time is right you will know how to pass it on.

I am honored, humbled and just tickled pink that I have been given the opportunity to write Sacred Pregnancy and that folks are responding so well to it. I hope that each of you finds your way into the book, the website and the community. The Sacred Pregnancy movement has so much planned and we hope that you are all there to share it with us.

In gratitude,

Anni Daulter

Cesarean Born Babies More Likely to be Obese

Cesarean Incision Scar- 6 days

A new study suggests that babies born via cesarean section are twice as likely to be obese as their vaginally born counter parts. This was true, even after accounting for what mom weighed, gestational age and breastfeeding. The theory is that the bacteria in the gut of a baby born via c-section is different than other babies.

What they found in another study was higher numbers of Firmicutes bacteria and lower numbers of Bacteroides bacteria in the intestines. It is also known that overweight and obese people tend to have higher numbers of the Firmicutes bacteria. Though this is only one theory for why these babies were at a higher risk of obesity.

The important take away here is that if you are considering an elective surgery, you may want to include this in the risk category, along with a higher rate of asthma and allergies for cesarean born babies, when trying to make your decision.

Organic kids pajamas that might bring more pleasant dreams

Organic kids pajamas that might bring more pleasant dreams

skylar luna kids loungewearWhy my kids have an obsession with sleepwear and pajamas I'm not entirely sure, but yep, obsessed pretty much sums it up. Over the years, I've learned to invest a little more in their pjs because I find the cheap stuff stretches and loses elasticity and pills and generally doesn't hold up for long at all. Especially considering how often my kids want to wear them.

I'm so happy to find the brand new line of kids pajamas - er, loungewear - from Skylar Luna. Made by super eco-conscious California designer Wen C. Reese, you'll find both summer-ready short sets and long pajama sets (sorry, loungewear), all with really tasteful, sophisticated, but kid-friendly designs. The fabric is a super high quality Turkish organic cotton and I love that they're made in Reese's own family's factory.

We gave Skylar Luna a test run and my kids raved about how soft and comfy they were. (My five year-old also asked to wear them to school.)

The prices aren't mall store cheap, but in the $30 range, they're way more affordable than I was expecting for such beautiful quality. Especially with the sweet little reusable linen bag they each come in.

Sizes run from 12m to 8T. And I know that legally, makers of organic loungewear (ie pjs not doused in fire "retardant" chemicals) are obliged to tell you that they're meant to be worn tight and fit super close to the body. But I'm only under a mom obligation, so I'll tell you if you find your kid is between sizes and you order up, you'll be happy that she gets to wear them that much longer. -Liz

Jillian Michaels Is a Mom – Times Two!

As a trainer on The Biggest Loser, Jillian Michaels was known for dishing out tough love to contestants.

But these days, she’s doling out tickles and hugs to her 2-year-old daughter, Lukensia – whom she recently brought home from Haiti after a lengthy adoption process — and the newborn son, Phoenix, that partner Heidi Rhoades gave birth to on May 3 in Los Angeles.

“We’re swimming in babies over here,” Michaels, 38, gleefully tells PEOPLE in its latest issue.

In an exclusive at-home interview and photo shoot, she discusses the two-year journey that led her to her daughter and reveals an incredible twist of fate: Rhoades, 31, delivered their son the same week Michaels finally brought her daughter home.

The instant family has made for long days and nights for Michaels. But she insists she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I don’t even answer email. I don’t have time to care about anything else,” she notes. “I want to be really present and enjoy all the nuances of their growth and development. I don’t want to rush any of it.”

For details on Michaels’s new life as a mom and to see more images from our exclusive family photo shoot, pick up the June 4 issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday.

Snooki Ditches 'Jersey Shore' House for Baby's Health

SnookiCall the Mother of the Year committee, because Snooki, aka Nicole Polizzi, of Jersey Shore just may be in the running. No, I don't mean Child Protective Services, as I might have suspected we'd need to call when we first learned she was pregnant; I mean she's actually shaping up to be a fit parent. Her latest move is so unexpected and so wise, it's downright admirable.

It was impressive enough when she of the perma-orange-Cheeto glow, actually gave up tanning for her baby's health, but this is even bigger and more self-sacrificing than that. She's actually leaving the Jersey Shore house behind.

Don't worry, she'll still be on the show, she just won't be in that lair of lewdness with the rest of the gang. She's getting her own place, which a source told E! Online will be close by. That means bye bye smoosh room and STD-scented air, and hello to a fresh new (and more sanitary start) for her new little bambino.  The last thing a pregnant mama needs is loud, drunken roommates coming in at all hours of the night, waking her up with their DTF friends and other escapades. With a pad of her own, she can still hang out with them, but then go home to her own bed.

Snooki herself told E! yesterday that no matter where she lives the smoosh room at least is off limits for her:

I'm definitely taking this pregnancy seriously and with all the bacteria and everyone having sex in the smoosh room its just not where a pregnant person or a baby should be.

Amen to that.

While a pregnant chick in the shore house would certainly make for interesting viewing, it's great to see Snooki setting limits and putting her baby's health first. Her strong maternal instincts would have been hard to image a few months back, but she's proving that while leopards may never change their spots those who like wear lots of leopard print can.

Do you think Snooki is going to make a good mom? Are you shocked she's moving out of the Jersey Shore house?

10 Bizarre, Creepy, or Otherwise Annoying Pregnancy Trends on Pinterest

How did we ever make design, food, and photography decisions without Pinterest? Why, back in my day all we had was a slightly terrifying lady named Martha Stewart, and in order to get her advice, we had to buy her magazines or watch her on TV. Uphill, both ways, in the snow!

Now, of course, Pinterest is there to fill the creative vacuum in our lives. We all know Pinterest is the go-to place for party ideas and recipes, but did you also know that it contains a rich treasure trove of maternity-themed photo and craft ideas—and some of them are downright deranged?

Here are 10 awesomely over-the-top pregnancy ideas to copy (or ... not) from Pinterest:

Keep Your Babe Covered in Gunapod’s Wearable Blanket

Nothing is sweeter than dressing your drowsy babe in their cozy sleep sack before you bid them goodnight.

Not so sweet is having to fumble (often in the dark!) with the sack’s zippers and velcro for that midnight diaper change.

The solution: Gunapod‘s Wearable Blanket ($29.50), a plush, no-fuss zip-up that keeps both you and baby covered all day long.

Adorned with an all-around (underarm to underarm) and front zipper, plus easy-to-access shoulder snaps, parents will have no problems changing their snoozing baby without disturbing them.

And whether you unzip the bottom to let their tiny feet wiggle free or keep them all bundled up, the coverall can be adapted to fit your little one’s temperature (and temperament!) needs.

Short Attention Span? Check out SIFF Short Films for Families

The Shortsfest portion of the Seattle International Film Festival takes place this weekend and with it a great opportunity to introduce kids to the art of short cinema – a genre fast gaining in popularity as iPhones, easy-to-operate cameras and other new technology make it easy for even novices to create a short film. If you have a younger child with short attention span, The Family Picture Show line up during the Shortsfest is for you.

The Family Picture Show will screen at SIFF Cinema Uptown Theater as part of Shortsfest May 27 at 11:30 a.m. Purchase advance online at siff.net.

The Family Picture Show includes a wide range of short films sure to get a laugh from even small children. Here’s the list of this year’s SIFF family shorts and a short summary of each piece. Click on each title for more information or to purchase tickets:

Behind (Canada):A young girl discovers that her backpack has her back. Colored in sweet pastels, this is a story every child will relate to.

The Big Brother (Switzerland) Girl and boy stick figures find new company in an incomplete third figure, who turns out to be a lot of fun.

Brad & Gary (France): If you’ve got a nose picker in your family, you don’t want to miss this sweet and goofy tale about the ups and downs of friendship.

Catch and Release (USA): A fish thrower and a flower vendor discover budding romance at Pike Place Market.

Fresh Guacamole (USA): A fresh take on a favorite Mexican dish.

Koyaa - The Extraordinary (Slovenia): Koyaa wants to tie his shoes but the naughty laces won't listen.

The Kumquat Kwadruplets (USA): When the Quadruplets work together they become nature's perfect machine. When they don't work together things fall apart.

The Last Marble (India): Sometimes children teach us what we can never learn from adults. True happiness is when one can create joy in another's life.

A Martian Picnic (USA): Ollie and his dog go for a picnic on Mars and find some very pesky inhabitants.

Metro (USA): A young girl chases a mysterious fox through a secret door and into a subterranean wonderland to retrieve her stolen train ticket.

The Vacuum Kid (USA): Kyle stands up for what he believes in—his love for the vacuum cleaner.

Zebu and the Photo Fish (Uganda): To the disbelief of his father, Zebu embarks on an adventure to rid his dad of debt, have his mother’s illness treated, and stabilize his family for good.

Laundry: Being Green While Getting Clean!

Blog

This week, we asked our community to share some of their non-toxic laundry tips with us. We were so overwhelmed by the many blog submissions that we didn’t want to highlight onlyl one! Below is what our bloggers suggest when "going green" with laundry.

Micaela from Mindful Momma suggests safer ways to scent, soften & reduce static in your laundry.

Scent:

  • Toss a lavender sachet into your dryer. You can easily make your own or buy them on Etsy but I admit to buying them from Trader Joe's occasionally.
  • Put a few drops of your favorite essential oil on a reusable cloth in the dryer.

Soften:

  • Add 1/2 cup of baking soda in with your detergent in the wash cycle. Baking soda is a natural water softener.
  • Vinegar is also popular for softening laundry. About 1/2 cup in the fabric softener container should do the trick.
  • Soak a cotton cloth in your favorite eco-friendly fabric softener. Squeeze out any excess liquid and toss in the dryer.

Static:

  • Dry synthetic fabrics separately from natural fibers as synthetics tend to create more static cling.
  • Throw a dryer ball or a tennis ball into the dryer to help eliminate static. I love these handmade, wool dryer balls from Etsy!*
  • Add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. Don't worry, your favorite shirt won't smell like a pickle - the vinegar smell dissipates in the wash!

Betsy from Eco-Novice shows us how to green our laundry in 10 easy steps, such as:

  • Use an eco-friendly laundry detergent. Use as little as possible to get the job done.
  • To remove stains or whiten fabrics, try using hydrogen peroxide, lemon juice, borax, vinegar, or an eco-friendly bleach-alternative instead of bleach.

Claire from MomsRising [http://www.momsrising.org/blog/top-5-safe-laundry-tips/] has some good tips on buying laundry supplies:

Diane form Big Green Purse uses a clothes line to dry her laundry. Here’s what she looks for when buying one:

You can use a length of rope you already have, but make sure it’s thin enough to be able to clip a clothes pin to. Otherwise, you’ll have to throw things over the top of the line, which works unless a strong (i.e., fast-drying) breeze is about. You can find several clothes line options in the Big Green Purse store, or at your local hardware store. NOTE: Most lines stretch over time, so you may need to buy a line tightener to keep the line taut enough so that the clothes don’t end up dragging on the ground.
You can try a rotary line dryer. Hang the laundry, then use a hand crank to easily raise the whole load another 16 inches or so to catch the breeze and dry quickly. For something simpler, install a retractable clothes line in your bathroom or laundry room. These lines can’t accommodate a lot of laundry at once, but they’re great for socks and underwear.
