Tanzania: Still Baby Twin Without Face, Sister Die in Rukwa

Sumbawanga — A 29 year-old mother's joy of delivering twins in Sumbawanga Municipality, Rukwa region was cut short after it was established that the male child was stillborn and without a face.

The woman (name withheld) gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, prematurely at Dr Atman Hospital around 2:00pm on January 01, this year. However, the male child had several physical deformities and was stillborn while the female baby died shortly after birth.

"The male child was born without a face and other physical deformities. That is it did not have eyes, a nose and a mouth. It also did not have a neck and its umbilical cord was missing at birth," Sumbawanga Municipality's Doctor-in-Charge, Dr Ally Makori Mussa said.

According to Dr Mussa, the female twin was normal at birth with its body parts intact. The mother is said to be in stable condition after undergoing thorough check-up at the hospital. She, however, confessed to the doctors attending her that she had never attended any clinics, never received medical treatment or counselling from a hospital during the nine months of her pregnancy.

According to Dr Mussa, the mother admitted to have used traditional medication wherever she was experiencing severe stomach pains during the early stages of her pregnancy. Meanwhile, a total of 12 children were born on New Year at Rukwa Regional Hospital and Dr Atman hospital in Sumbawanga town.

A survey conducted by the 'Daily News' established that five, all female, were born at Rukwa Regional Hospital. At Dr Atman Hospital at Christ the King area, seven children were born and among them four were girls and three were boys.
