First Woman U.S. Marine Corps Pilot Talks About Life at Museum of Flight Lecture

On Saturday, June 9, Lt. Col. Sarah Deal, the first woman to fly as a U.S. Marine Corps aviator, will talk about the centennial of Marine Corps aviation, her place in this history, and her personal story as a military pilot and a mother. The presentation is at 2 p.m. and is free with admission to the museum.

Trained as a helicopter pilot, then 1st Lt. Sarah Deal was winged as a Naval Aviator and became the first female Marine Corps Aviator on April 21, 1995. In 2002 and 2003, Deal served 15 months in the Middle East for Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Upon returning from the war in July 2003, then Maj. Deal was assigned as the Executive Officer of Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 3 at MCAS Miramar, Calif. After 12 years on active duty, Deal transferred to the Marine Corps Reserves in June 2004. In 2008 Deal left for a seven-month deployment to Afghanistan, where she flew over 300 combat hours. Deal is married to airline pilot Philip Burrow, and the couple has twin sons.

Lt. Col. Deal will sign the book Military Fly Moms after her lecture. The Museum of Flight is located at 9404 E. Marginal Way S. in Seattle. To learn more about this event, call 206-764-5720 or visit museumofflight.org.

The 6 best new products for babies (because I couldn't narrow it to five)

The 6 best new products for babies (because I couldn't narrow it to five)

Picking just five of the best new products for babies? That's hard! And yet, a few weeks ago, I was honored to be one of the terrific judges at the New York Baby Show Expo put on by New York Family Magazine, and was asked to do that very thing.

Narrowing down from about a zillion, all of which are wonderful (and sure to appear here soon), here are the winners by popular vote among us...plus one product that I voted for that I can only assume came in a very close sixth. Because it's awesome.

Ubbi Diaper Pails - I'm so glad I wasn't the only judge swooning over these beautiful, functional, odor-preventing steel diaper pails that we just happened to rave about here, this past week. Where were you five years ago when I really needed you!

Aden + Anais Serenity Star - This multi-tasking clock/sound machine/nightlight/feeding system is not on the market yet, but when it is, it will be in nurseries everywhere, guaranteed. I only saw a quick demo, so we're looking forward to getting to talk about it in more detail soon. Besides - cute!

Strollaway Stroller Hanger - I fell in love with this mom-made over-the-door stroller hanger a few years ago, and it's still a fixture on our closet door if just for handbag and bicycle chains. It's an apartment dwelling family's dream--or for anyone who wants to keep the muddy wheels off the floor. Add one to your registry, stat.

Britax Strollers - Britax is sure giving the fancy high end stroller companies a run for their money with great function and much improved design. And the B-AGILE stroller, which we already love, is about to make more moms happy when it's adapted to become Britax's very first twin stroller. Keep an eye out for it at shops like Magic Beans.

Lazoo - We discovered this Japanese company's clever Squiggles! drawing app recently (it's free!), which is inspired by their free form, creativity building children's coloring books, of which my children are proud owners. Great for road trips and rainy days indoors.

Also...

Maxi-Cosi Prezi Infant Seat- I absolutely adored the smart, comfy design that reinvents the infant car seat with both safety and style in mind. (Plus the pink version looks like Penelope Pitstop's racer.)  It's coming out soon; until then, you can preorder at Babies 1st, and here's a video preview courtesy of the Car Seat Blog. Worth watching, because the photo, while cool, hardly does all the features justice.

For more about the winners, the judging, the Baby Show in general, check out the post at the . New York Family Blog

Pregnant Woman Gives Birth After Dying in Car Crash

newborn feetA pregnant woman from Indiana tragically lost her life this past weekend when her car went over the center lane on the highway, collided with a semi-truck, and wound up crashing into a utility pole. The reason for why Angelica Thrash's car suddenly swerved is unknown, but she sustained injuries bad enough that she could not be resuscitated with CPR. And to make things even worse, her two small children were also in the car, though thankfully, they are both ok. But there's nothing more devastating than children losing their mother -- especially when she was carrying their unborn sibling.

Angelica's story is beyond heartbreaking, but a piece of it is also miraculous -- because even though doctors could not save her after the accident, they were able to perform an emergency C-section to deliver her baby. And while the infant is still in neonatal intensive care and isn't completely out of the woods, it's astonishing that any baby could survive after an accident like that.

I can't even begin to imagine what must have gone through Angelica's head in the seconds before she ultimately hit the utility pole -- but I'm sure her two children and her baby were in the forefront of her mind. I can remember be incredibly hypersensitive while driving when I was pregnant. I went a lot slower and was much more aware of the other cars around me. I was just so terrified of getting into an accident and having something happen to my baby -- which I'm guessing is how she felt in those final moments as well. If only she'd somehow known that her little one would make it through the accident -- perhaps it would've given her one last feeling of peace.

As awful as this story is, I think it's also important to note that Angelica was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident. Since she was seven months along in her pregnancy, I guess it's possible that she chose not to wear it because it was uncomfortable with her growing belly. And while we can't determine whether wearing it would have saved her, her tragedy should still serve as an important reminder to expectant mothers (and all drivers for that matter) to buckle up every time they get behind the wheel.

Have you been afraid to drive or more nervous about driving since you became pregnant?

Good Luck Breastfeeding Your Baby; You're Going to Need It

baby drinking bottleIf you're pregnant and planning to breastfeed for at least the recommended six months, good for you. You're probably not going to make it, but good for you for thinking you will anyway.

That's the harsh-but-true reality according to a discouraging new report about breastfeeding. It found that while more than 85 percent of women say they intend to breastfeed for three months or longer, only 32.4 percent actually do. Basically, researchers found that the road to a formula-fed baby is paved with good breastfeeding intentions.

Furthermore, the study found that moms who are obese, are smokers, or had the longest breastfeeding goals were the least likely to succeed. Single moms were also found to meet their goals less frequently than women in committed relationships.

Overall, the numbers are pretty depressing, and, unfortunately, I understand all too well how one can fall short of her breastfeeding goals. I too had great intentions of breastfeeding my children for the first year, but I didn't make it more than a few weeks without supplementing with formula and another month or two before I gave up altogether.

My son was a different story as he was a 27-week preemie and wasn't able to breastfeed in the beginning, which presented problems later. I pumped as long as I could. With my full-term daughter, however, breastfeeding was just too hard for a number of reasons. The bottom line is that it wasn't working for us. I regret now that I didn't try harder, and looking back I wish I'd been more prepared and more determined to stick it out.

I don't think this study should be used by those of us who failed to meet our goals to beat ourselves up, nor do I believe that formula is the devil. We do, however, know that breast milk is best for our babies if we can provide it, and this study is a harsh reality check for women as to the odds we're up against and how difficult it really can be, especially when we're not well prepared and don't have adequate support.

So how can a mom better succeed at her breastfeeding goals? WebMD provides a list of tips that can improve a woman's chance at meeting her breastfeeding goals. It includes things like:

Start breastfeeding right away. Breastfeeding in the first hour after birth can have a long-term impact on success.

Don't swaddle right away. Skin-to-skin contact is best.

Ask for help. This is the MOST important one as far as I'm concerned. For many women, breastfeeding is not as easy and idyllic as it's made out to be, and there are people who can and will help, but not if you don't ask.

Did you meet your breastfeeding goals? What do you feel like got in the way if you didn't?

Epidural or nothing?

Labor Partner

Talking to moms about their options for pain relief usually yields me very similar answers: I did my homework and I chose an epidural. My next question is always, what else did you consider? The vast majority say nothing.

This always leaves me feeling a bit puzzled - how can you make a choice if you only have one option? One of the first times I had this conversation was with a good friend, who had her baby years before we met. I asked her what her thought process was going into pregnancy and birth surrounding pain medication for labor. She said, "I didn't want to writhe around, so I got an epidural." Before I could stop myself, the automatic thing out of my mouth was, "There are other options other than writhing or an epidural."

She honestly had never considered that thought. In her mind, there were women who had epidurals and women who didn't. It was as simple as that. No one had ever told her that she had choices, lots of them.

Do you know what all of your choices are when it comes to relieving labor pain?

April is Autism Month; New Studies Look for Causes

Blog

by Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff, Executive Director & CEO, Healthy Child Healthy World

On the heels of last week’s CDC report that found higher rates of autism than ever before—now affecting 1 in 88 children and representing a 78% increase in the last 10 years—a new study published last week in the journal Clinical Epigenetics is especially interesting. The study looked at how substances such as high fructose corn syrup can lead to mineral deficiencies, how deficiencies in minerals such as zinc can reduce the body’s ability to eliminate toxic substances such as mercury and pesticides, which have been linked to autism.

Another study, published in the journal Pediatrics, found that obesity during pregnancy may increase a woman’s chances of giving birth to a child with autism—by about 67 percent. When asked about theories linking obesity and autism, the study’s author told The Washington Post that excess blood sugar and inflammation-related substances in the mother’s blood may damage the fetal brain.

Dioxin Drama Continues

After last month’s 21-year delayed EPA assessment of dioxin as not posing a “significant health risk,” last weeks news that the EPA has withdrawn clean up guidelines for the substance alarmed activists who warn that without guidelines, cleanup levels will vary from state to state.

Nail Polish Labeling Lies

Pregnant moms should be especially conscious of a new Department of Toxic Substances Control reporter published last week that found nail polishes labeled as “big-three free” actually contained high levels of chemicals toluene, formaldehyde and DBP which have been linked to birth defects, asthma and other illnesses, according to the Washington Post. Yet another reason to support the Safe Cosmetics Act, which would finally—finally!—establish regulation for the currently self-regulating $50 billion personal care industry. Send a message to Congress in support of the Safe Cosmetics Act!

Can Carcinogens Be Free & Gentle?

Even after more than 74,000 consumers signed a petition asking Tide to remove the carcinogenic 1,4 dioxane from its’ Free & Gentle line of laundry detergents marketed to newborns, Procter & Gamble still has not responded. We stepped up pressure by working with Women’s Voices for the Earth to organize a Social Media Day of Action on Friday, in which 307 people posted messages on Tide’s Facebook wall with the message to get the cancer-causing chemical out of their detergent; we’ll deliver a letter to the company today, signed by groups including Breast Cancer Fund, Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments, and Health Care Without Harm. Meanwhile, we’re just about 500 signatures away from our goal of 75,000. Have you signed on yet?

Party Week Deadline

This community is inspired! More than 3,000 participants have signed on to be part of National Healthy Child Party Week May 5-12. Today is the LAST day to order a kit in time for the week. But the story’s not over: We’re making more kits so that 5,000 can participate in the month of May. Please join us in hosting a party that will change the world!

Earth Day Expands

Three cheers for Earth Day! The April 22nd celebration that became official in the U.S. in 1970 is now celebrated by 175 countries, according to Hudson Valley Magazine. How will you celebrate?

Free Talk: “Early Learning: Do We Need It? The Science of Baby Brain Development”

Did you know that 85 percent of a child’s brain development happens before they turn 5 years old? Parents naturally want to give their young children every advantage possible when it comes to preparing them for successful, healthy lives, but how? Get ideas during the free parent talk: "Early Learning: Do we need it? The science of baby brain development," which will be held on Thursday, June 7, at 7 p.m. at Educare in White Center (625 S.W. 100th St. in Seattle).

Quality, affordable preschool is increasingly harder to find. In Washington, only 40 percent of 3- and 4-year-olds attend some kind of pre-kindergarten program. Research tells us that early learning programs are critical. They put young minds on the path for academic success and increase upward mobility. Kids with access to high-quality programs are more likely to graduate high school, hold higher wage jobs and commit fewer crimes in their lifetime.

Join the League of Education Voters, University of Washington’s Institute for Learning and Brain Science and MomsRising.org for an evening of education and advocacy. Guest speakers will be Hannah Lidman, Director of the Translation, Outreach & Education division at the Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences, and Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Momsrising.org, also an author, freelance journalist and consultant in the field of environmental policy and political strategy. Learn more about the science of brain development and what you can do to be an advocate for your child.

Free childcare will be provided for the first 40 parents that register. Please include how many children will need care and what their ages are in your email. Questions? Contact maggie@educationvoters.org. To learn more about this event, and to pre-register, visit the League of Education Voters website

Well Helloooo, Kitty

Well Helloooo, Kitty

Hello Kitty Vans shoesI have a thing for Hello Kitty (as you may well know) and I also have a thing for Vans.

[see more awesome kicks after the jump!]

The collection of Hello Kitty Vans Sneakers for kids is adorable, as you'd expect, but I think what I like more is that they're available in women's sizes too--provided you're amply ironic enough to pull them off. (Hint: not with mom jeans.) I'm not sure that I fit that description, so I'll just be happy watching my girls skip down the street wearing these classic low-top lace-ups.

It makes me very happy indeed to think of two of my favorite things from the 80s coming together so nicely. If only you could press the heel and The Smiths would play, I'd be in heaven. -Liz

kids car seat organizer all-natural / it's a zoo in here in royal blue for children and baby (ready to ship) by SewnNatural

This car seat organizer is a stylish and sturdy way to keep a child's car treasures where everyone can see them. No more finding books, toys or crayons jammed in the seat or under a floor mat months later.

**READY TO SHIP**

☆ Fabulous gender neutral style with a fresh cotton designer fabric by Alexander Henry. From my own original design.

This handcrafted organizer is of the highest quality and made of all natural fibres:

• SIZE 25"x 14" / 64 cm x 36 cm

• For strength and durability, there are 3 layers of fabric (back royal blue cotton, inner cotton batting and outer designer fabric - 2D Zoo by Alexander Henry)

• Each pocket is lined in beautiful royal blue cotton and trimmed with white cotton binding

• Carefully designed pockets of different sizes with velcro closures and accordion pleats

• Specific pocket to hold sippy cup/water bottle

• Easy laundering, hand wash or cool machine, hang to dry

**NOTE: The lower strap of the organizer will fit around car seat whose whole circumference (through the crease between seat and seat back) is 49"-51". The strap is adjustable by 2" of velcro on each end of the strap, so that it will fit tightly. Please convo me if you need a different measurement for the lower strap of your organizer.

~ HOW IT WORKS ~
This organizer faces the child car seat, and fastens to the back of the front passenger seat with a secure black strap around the metal supports of the headrest. A second black strap fastens around the crease area between the seat and the seat back.

Let's talk if you would like this in another fabric.

◆ This order comes with a little eco GIFT to make you smile!

We ship internationally and happily combine shipping for multiple items.

Woman Saves Unborn Twins by Lying Motionless in Bed for 5 Months

hospital bedHearing the words "strict bed rest" during pregnancy is something no woman ever wants to hear, especially if it's heard during the first or second trimester. Lisa Copley got those exact orders from her doctor -- and wound up being forced to lie completely still in her bed for 24 hours a day for an entire 5 months to save the lives of her twins!

Lisa's cervix was so thin that the only way she could maintain the pregnancy was to literally not move her body for almost half a year, which ultimately caused her muscles to start to atrophy, leaving her unable to walk. She also developed a skin condition that gave her severe hives all over her body. (Can't a girl get a break?)

During her time on bed rest, Lisa was not even allowed to get up take a shower. OMG. Can you even imagine not being able to even bathe?! She must have been ready to absolutely lose her mind -- and even compared lying in the bed staring at the ceiling to what a prisoner likely goes through.

More from The Stir: Infertile Woman Gives Birth 5 Hours After She's Declared Pregnant

But what really struck me about this story was the reason why Lisa's cervix was so thin in the first place. It was due to scar tissue from a surgery she'd had years earlier to remove abnormal cells. And when I was about 21 years old, I had the same exact procedure done. It took forever for my cervix to dilate during my labor with my son, which my doctor attributed to scar tissue from that surgery. Things finally progressed, but after hearing Lisa's story, I can't help but feel like I was truly lucky and blessed not to have any further complications. Of course, I would've done anything to make sure my son was born healthy. But lying in bed for five whole months? I'm pretty sure that would've put me over the edge.

Luckily, Lisa's long hospital stay did the trick, and she delivered her twins at 35 weeks. Both babies and their mama are now doing just fine, and she says every single minute of lying in that bed was worth it. But I can't help but wonder if she cringes a tiny bit every time she sees a hospital bed -- or any bed for that matter. I wouldn't be surprised if she actually welcomes getting up for middle of the night feedings after her ordeal!

Have you had to go on bed rest at all during your pregnancy?
