The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and AFRIBABY INITIATIVE, a non-government organisation, have concluded plans to ensure the safety of nursing mothers and their infants on the roads, this yuletide.
To this end, the two organisations have agreed to embark on a road safety enlightenment demonstration for nursing mothers during the 5th African International Babycare and Mothercare Festival, coming up at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), Gwagwalada, Abuja between December 4 and 6.
The Executive Director, AFRIBABY INITIAVE, Mrs. Olayinka Odiboh, disclosed this while briefing Chief Molade Okoya-Thomas and other members of the Board of Trustees of the organisation on the programme of event, recently.
She said that Commander Jonas Agwu, Corps Public Education Officer, will deliver a lecture and demonstrate to nursing mothers, how to ensure their babies' safety whilst driving or travelling. Agwu, according to her, will also demonstrate to mothers, how to handle babies while riding on commercial motorcycles, in buses and what to do in emergency traffic situations to ensure that they and their babies stay alive.
Odiboh said the demonstration is the first of its kind in the history of the continent as 12 African countries will be represented by thousands of mothers and their babies at the AFRIBABY event .She listed the countries to include South Africa, Ghana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Cote d'Ivoire, Liberia, Tunisia, Morocco, Kenya, Uganda and Nigeria.
"This FRSC/AFRIBABY effort is to justify the NGO's continental objectives of promoting everything that is associated with babycare with reference to the millennium development goals (MDGs) 2015 of reducing infant mortality in Africa as well as celebrating babies born in Africa," she said.
Dignitaries expected at the three days event, according to her, include the First Lady of Nigeria and wife of the President, Her Excellency, Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan who will serve as Special Guest of Honour and Mother of the Day; Honourable Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu and Minister of Women Affairs, Hajia Zainab Maina as Guests of Honour.
Others are Senator Philip Aduda representing the Federal Capital Territory at the Senate, Hon. (Mrs.) Mulikat Adeola-Akande and Mrs. Asabe Baba-Nahaya, National President, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) among other top government functionaries.
To cap the event, mothers and babies will receive exciting gifts for their participation in the event, Odiboh concluded.
