The Zoos Are All Aglow for the Holidays

The zoos are all aglow for the holidays, and local families have some great options for a festive evening outing - one new and one tried-and-true.

Woodland Park Zoo WildLights Festival

Woodland Park Zoo is illuminated in a whole new light now that its first ever winter lights festival, WildLights, made its debut. The sparkling, after-hours event continues nightly through Jan. 1, when approximately 375,000 energy-efficient LED lights recreate wild animals and wild places in two and three dimensions along the zoo’s pathways.

Here is a look at what Seattle's Child parent reviewer Isabel Sanden thought:

“Mom! Look! Look! Look!” exclaimed a back row full of kids at their first glimpse of WildLights, the Woodland Park Zoo’s new holiday light festival.  “Everything is sparkling!”

And truly, everything was.

I turned around to see their faces aglow with wonder.  Bright smiles reflected the brilliance of the lights they gazed upon.  Their sense of amazement was infectious, and my husband and I laughed at our own excitement of seeing our Seattle zoo decorated for the holidays.

Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium Zoolights

Zoolights, a Tacoma holiday-season tradition at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium since 1988, has for years brought light to the night and a warm glow to visitors’ hearts. This festival boasts more than 80 lighted zoo-animal figurines and multiple-piece scenes, camel rides and more.

Here is a look at what Seattle's Child parent reviewer Kelly Rogers Flynt thought:

With more than a half million shining lights, Zoolights at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is truly a sight to behold.  A holiday tradition for 25 years, this event shows no signs of slowing down.  An evening stroll to view the lights is a great way to spend some family time together during this busy season.

The light show is quite spectacular.  My kids especially enjoyed the exhibits with animals lit in sequence to make it appear as if they are moving.  Because there is a slight delay between each sequence, you can’t rush through without risking missing a treat.  The only thing that my kids seemed to tire of was the frequent parental request for them to stop for photos.
