Editor’s Note: January 2013

If we are lucky, January will be that most blessed of things – ordinary.

We’ll get to coax kids to wake up and go to sleep, sit still and get moving, talk to us and stop interrupting. We’ll hold them close and urge independence, applaud the first few steps and shed tears as we send them back to college.  Every day we will lose our patience, doubt our ability to be a “good” parent, wonder if our kids are OK. Whether we take it or not, we will get thousands of chances to give our kids a hug and inhale their sweetness.

Most of us will be fortunate enough to get to go to the grocery store, make toast, pack lunches and cook dinner over and over and over again. Kids bouncing off the walls and on the beds may allow us to yell for quiet repeatedly. We might even get to be gridlocked in traffic so that fragments of illuminating conversation waft to our ears from the back seat of the car.

Chances are we can take at least one walk with a loved one in pelting, freezing rain. And seize a moment to sit on the couch and read a story together. Some of the luckiest among us will be able to skip setting our alarms because toddlers will serenade the new day – hours before dawn. And others will be given the opportunity to savor the quiet peace of the night as we listen for the front door to open to tell us our teen is safely home.

If we are lucky, January will be that most blessed of things – ordinary.

Pregnant Twin Sisters Give Birth on the Same Day

baby feetBeing a twin is an amazing thing. An amazing thing to watch being that I'm a mom of twins. And as most moms of twins will tell you, they don't often hit milestones at the same time. But these twin sisters hit one major milestone on the same day.

These identical twins sisters gave birth on the same day, just two hours apart from each other at Summa Akron City Hospital in Ohio.

Aimee and Ashlee Nelson, both 19 (because, you know, twins are the same age), also gave their little bundles the esteemed title of New Year's Eve babies. While we were all getting ready for the countdown to midnight, the twins' babies were making their journey into the world. The twins who gave birth to sort of twins once removed are also the same sex, and the names given to these special cousins are really good "twin names."

Both boys! Aiden and Donavyn. A little rhymey, but not too much.

Donavyn Scott Bratten gets to say he's older. He's Aimee and Matthew Bratten's son who was born at 12:11 p.m. weighing 7 pounds, 2 1/2 ounces, and was 21 inches long. Aimee woke up at 4 a.m. with labor pains and headed to the hospital. Her due date wasn't for another week.

Aiden Dilts didn't alert his mom Ashlee he was ready to be born until around 6 a.m. He ended up making his entrance at 2:03 p.m., just two hours after his cousin. Aiden weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces, and measured 22 1/2 inches long.

In case you didn't do the math there, that means the twins were in labor for the same amount of time -- about eight hours.

The same doctor delivered the cousins.

The new mamas' mother told the Akron Beacon Journal that her identical twin girls weren't the type to do everything the same over the years, though she did dress them alike when they were babies. She also said they were very much individuals but often liked the same things. "... the funny part is that nine times out of 10, one would come home with one thing purple and the other one would do the same thing but pink," she said.

And now they both get to experience motherhood together.

This isn't the first time identical twin sisters had babies on the same day. Last year, identical twins Zaakira Mitchell and Shaakira White had their babies an hour apart!

What magical stories! What a blessing! All the best to everyone.

How adorable is it that identical twins had their babies on the same day? Are you a twin -- do you do things the same/at the same time as your twin?

If I could save time in a bottle: creating a family time capsule

If I could save time in a bottle: creating a family time capsule

I love the idea of using this first day of the year to reflect back on 2012 by creating a keepsake that we'll be able to look back at someday. And when the idea is as easy as this one, I know I may even be able to handle pulling it all together even after staying up past midnight.

Starting with the printable sheet called Important Things About Me in 2012, older kids can get to work adding in their favorite books, names of best friends, and their favorite place to visit while younger kids can dictate their own.

I hope my son gets a laugh someday at seeing his Three Favorite Foods documented as "chicken fingers, chicken fingers, and chicken fingers."

Endangered Sloth Bear at Woodland Park Zoo Gives Birth

Woodland Park Zoo caps off the year with yet another significant birth: an endangered sloth bear. The cub, born Dec. 18 in an off-view maternity den, represents the first offspring between 7-year-old mother Tasha and 16-year-old father Randy.

The last birth of sloth bears at the zoo was in 2004.

The mother and newborn cub will remain off view to allow for maternal bonding and continued nursing. Animal management staff is monitoring the new family via a live web cam to ensure the cub continues to thrive.

“Mom and cub are doing very well,” said Martin Ramirez, mammal curator at Woodland Park Zoo. “This is Tasha’s first cub, but her motherly instincts kicked in immediately. Following the birth, she built two large mounds of hay in the maternity den to support the new cub. With the web cam set up, we are able to see the two bonding and can hear the cub vocalizing and nursing normally.”

Sloth bears are born extremely small and blind at birth. They open their eyes at about three weeks old and can walk at four weeks. Unlike other bear species, sloth bear mothers carry cubs on their back when cubs reach about two months.

“With fewer than 50 sloth bears in North American zoos today and fewer than 10,000 remaining in the wild, we are thrilled to welcome this rare, new addition,” said Ramirez.

The sloth bear exhibit is currently off view to the public as construction continues for the new Asian tropical forest exhibit. Upon completion of the exhibit, the zoo’s sloth bears will move into a new, state-of-the-art exhibit complex that will also feature Malayan tigers, Asian small-clawed otters and tropical birds. The $19.6 million exhibit project, part of the zoo’s $80 million More Wonder More Wild Campaign, will replace the 60-year-old infrastructure that critically endangered tigers and Asian bears currently inhabit at the zoo.

Uganda: Born of a Surrogate Mother

Christmas is here and we are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Like Mary the mother of Jesus conceived a baby by the Holy Spirit, Ugandan women are also having 'miracle' babies, writes Carol Natukunda

In 2005, a 29-year-old mother was paid sh4.5m to carry a pregnancy for another woman. She delivered healthy twins and immediately handed them over to the woman who had hired her to carry the babies. She was not allowed to see the babies even for a minute. This woman (names withheld) became the fi rst surrogate mother in Uganda.

A surrogate mother is a woman who agrees, usually by contract and for a fee, to bear a child for a couple who are childless because the wife is infertile or physically incapable of carrying a pregnancy. Usually, she has no gene attachment as only a fertilised egg is put in her womb.

In a telephone interview with Sunday Vision on July 29, 2006, the surrogate mother, who preferred anonymity, was

excited about her experience. "I did it for money, but now I am very proud to have rendered such a service to a mother who lost her womb to cancer at the age of 22," she said.

"I was not allowed to see the babies after birth, but I do not mind. They have already paid me sh4.5m as agreed and I am home recovering. I am very relaxed, especially since my husband had consented to the arrangement," she added.

The surrogate mother said she had to take her children to a boarding school when she was fi ve months pregnant, so

that they would not ask about the babies. She also had to leave her home to avoid the neighbours' enquiries after giving birth. The surrogate mother was also mentally and psychologically prepared to give birth to another woman's children.

Now Common

Six years later, many Ugandan women are embracing the technology. Over 50 Ugandan women have since rented their

wombs, according to Dr. Tamale Ssali, the director of Women's International Hospital in Kampala.

This means that there are over 50 Ugandan children who have been born through surrogacy, since some of them might be twins. Ssali says the surrogacy programme gives one an opportunity to make dreams come true for those who cannot have their own children.

While not biologically related to the baby, surrogates play the most critical role in the process - carrying and delivering the baby created through eggs donated by the mother and sperm from a sperm donor or father.

Ssali is reluctant to discuss how much each of these 50 women earns at the end of the whole process. "It is not about money. It is often a mutual agreement. In fact, there are those who have done it free of charge," says Ssali.

However, a source at the centre says surrogates are paid between sh4m and sh10m. But sometimes, the source adds, because of the emotions and excitement involved, the "hiring" parents even triple the fee. "That is usually on a private arrangement. We do not intervene," the source said.

According to Ssali, both parties are often advised to sign a contract in order not to have any misunderstandings during the process.

The procedure

Dr. Ssali, who handled the first surrogate mother, says the procedure costs about sh13m. The costs include sh5m for gynaecological tests and sh3m for antenatal care and medicines.

The programme also involves counselling and psychological support to guide one through the entire journey. The surrogate mother is also provided with as much information as possible; spelling out their expectations in the surrogacy process.

"We thoughtfully match you with ntended parents, who desire the same experiences you do," says a doctor who prefers anonymity. "We look at this as a miracle. You are providing something that no one else can."

The doctor was, however, hesitant to comment on whether this is a form of making quick money, especially for women who are disadvantaged. "It is a selfless service. No amount of money can reward anyone. It is only a token of appreciation," he says.

Sources further reveal that on average, they receive about five inquiries every week on surrogacy. While the hospital may help couples fi nd a surrogate mother in some cases, some come with their friends or relatives, who offer to do it voluntarily.

Why Surrogacy

Efforts to talk to some of the women who have gone through the surrogacy experience were futile. The hospital says it is unethical to reveal identities of these women.

Besides, the phenomenon is relatively new in Uganda and has a lot of stigma surrounding it.

But like the fi rst 29-year-old surrogate mother confessed to doing it for a mother who had lost her womb, a lot of couples choose surrogacy because of many problems. Ssali observes that some women may have overgrown fi broids in the uterus, which cannot allow them to conceive.

Others may have lost their uterus as a result of excessive bleeding during previous childbirth or a serious infection, which may have caused the uterus to rapture. Another common illness is endometriosis, a condition in which the uterus gets inflamed.

Emotions

It is not easy being a surrogate mother, or the receiving parent. One nurse tells of a surrogate mother whom she had to relocate to another district altogether because she could not fi t in the community. With the money she got, she was able to start a business and start life all over again.

"It is complicated. What do you tell your neighbours who have seen you pregnant? Even if you are on the receiving end, how do you break the news that you have a baby when they have never seen you pregnant?" says a nurse.

In developed countries like the US, there are stories of surrogate mothers developing a close bond with the unborn baby and feeling devastated when they have to surrender the child at birth.

Because of the laws in many countries, surrogacy is similar to adoption, in that the surrogate mother is often recognised as the birth mother and can still change her mind about handing over the child to the birth parents.

If she decides to keep the baby, the parents will also lose any money they have invested into care for the surrogate mother. Even though the adoptive mother did not give birth, she still will experience a myriad of feelings that come along with being a new mother.

In Uganda, no cases of disgruntled surrogates have been reported. "The practice goes on undercover, so probably even if there is a problem, someone fears to report it," observes Sarah Opendi, the primary healthcare state minister.

Surrogate offspring

There are concerns that the rising numbers of children born through assisted reproduction may suffer lower self-esteem or be treated less positively by parents, siblings and schoolmates.

However, several studies show that children born to a surrogate mother or conceived through donated sperm or a donated egg do just as well psychologically as their counterparts who are naturally conceived.

Holiday DIY: CD Tower Advent Calendar

Blog

By Dinah of DIYInspired.com

I was so excited to make an advent calendar this year because my daughter is finally old enough.  I searched online for some inspiration for a DIY holiday craft and saw some great advent calendar ideas but none that I really wanted to do.  Then one day, I was getting my guest room ready for some visiting friends and saw a CD tower that I had from college.  I currently used it to house guest room necessities like towels, toiletries, pens, paper, and such.  The cubbies are so useful and would be perfect to hold little wrapped gifts for my advent calendar… and it’s RED!  Here’s how I made my CD Tower Advent Calendar.

This project only costs me $20, including all the little trinkets and presents inside.  I know that’s a little more than most advent calendars, but still budget friendly.  I bought items in the dollar bins that had three or more items in a package and broke the package up to save money.  Some things I bought were pens, erasers, candy, stickers, hair clips, plastic play jewelry, and the last one… the grand finale… a Dora Explorer jump rope that costs $1.50.
I bought red and green paper sacks and different types of ribbon to embellish the packages (of course using my coupons AND shopping on black Friday).  I used circle craft punches and printed numbers and letters on my computer.  I thought the circles were perfect because they looked like ornaments.   I punched a small hole on top and added ribbon for each number ornament.  I also alternated the colors.  With my left over paper and ribbon, I made a “days til Christmas” banner to go down the middle on the CD Tower.

Here are some more pictures:

Kim Kardashian's Pregnancy Is Sad News for Sister Khloe

By now the whole world has heard the news that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are expecting a little Kimye. Frankly, I wasn't surprised in the slightest. Kim has always been jonesing on babies, and sources have recently said that Kanye is up for it (har) too. But as soon as I heard, I did think about Khloe. After all, she has struggled for years with unsuccessfully trying to have a baby with husband Lamar. What must it be like for Khloe when every Kardashian around her is able to get pregnant with hardly any effort at all?

Let's remember it was Kim who has been most pushy with Khloe about her lack of bun in oven -- desperately trying to get her to take fertility drugs, and even once convincing her to go to a fertility clinic under false pretenses. Khloe has gotten really angry with Kim in the past for this, and has told her flat out that doctors have told her she's fine and she'll conceive when she's ready.

More from The Stir: Kim Kardashian & Kayne West Might Be Totally Getting Married (VIDEO)

Khloe's tweets about her sister certainly make her sound ecstatic for Kim -- but what else is she going to say? I'm not saying that Khloe isn't genuinely happy for Kim. I'm sure she's mature enough to put aside her feelings about herself to be happy for her sister. But surely there's some part of her that must feel disappointed that it's not her and Lamar. Who could blame her?

Still, I wouldn't be shocked if eventually Khloe ends up out-birthing the Kardashian klan -- except for maybe uber-fertile Kris Jenner, who's had six kids. I've seen many women struggle with infertility for years only to suddenly begin popping out babies, one right after the other, like a fetus machine. I saw one woman who couldn't have a baby for 10 years suddenly get pregnant three times in a row beginning in her late 30s.

And, of course, Khloe can always try fertility drugs or IVF. Her options are certainly still open. It must be annoying that everyone else in her family can pop 'em out so effortlessly though!

Do you feel sorry for Khloe? Have you ever struggled with infertility?

Is Sugar Even Worse Than We Thought?

Blog

By Healthy Child Staff

Psst! Put down the holiday cookies for a minute. Do you have a general household policy on sugar? Are you the sort of family that swaps Halloween candy with your kids for safer or healthier treats? If your kids complain about how you approach the sweet stuff, they might be interested to know it could be stricter. A lot stricter. A growing number of researchers are starting to compile a body of evidence saying sugar and other sweeteners are actually toxic to the human body. So much so they should be government regulated like alcohol and cigarettes.

An article in the journal Nature by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) proposes taxing all food and drinks that contain added sugar. Perhaps they’re friends with New York City’s mayor, Michael Bloomberg, who banned the sale of large sugary drinks like soda. The UCSF researchers also suggest banning sales in or near schools and putting age limits on sugary items, according to an article on LiveScience.com

The reasoning behind their proposed bans? They say sugar increases blood pressure, cholesterol, liver failure risk, obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. It has hit a nerve. Dr. Robert Lustig, the UCSF specialist on pediatric hormone disorders and an expert in childhood obesity, has nearly 3 million hits on his sugar-related YouTube video.

The New York Times Magazine gave the same topic, including Dr. Lustig, a cover story entitled Is Sugar Toxic? in 2011. Not only does figuring out the answer to this question stand to help people who are obese or have diabetes or metabolic disorders, it could save substantial U.S. health care dollars spent on these diet-related illnesses. As the medical community works to get clearer answers to this great sugar debate, suddenly a mass market chocolate swapped for a Fair Trade one doesn’t seem like much of a hardship.

You can go back to your holiday cookies now.

Matthew McConaughey Announces Baby's Name and It's One No One Would Have Guessed

Camila Alves and Matthew McConaugheyYesterday we heard the happy news that Matthew McConaughey and his lovely wife Camila Alves had welcomed their third baby into the world. There were lovely visions of pink as everyone imagined what a gorgeous little girl she would grow up to be with genetically blessed parents like these. There's just one problem -- they actually had a boy!

Yep, though it was widely reported that their newest addition was a girl, last night Matthew himself took to his whosay page to set the record straight. He said the little guy arrived at 7:43 a.m. on December 28, and "He" weighed in at a not-so-little 9 pounds, and 21 inches. He also announced his name. Any guesses?

It's Livingston Alves McConaughey. He offered no explanation as to why they chose the name, but stated: "Bless up and thank you for your well wishes. Happy New year, and just keep livin, Camila and Matthew McConaughey."

"Keep livin'" -- cute. And if you recall, Matthew and Camilla run the j.k. living foundation that helps children make positive healthy changes in their lives. So it's pretty cool that they seemingly derived their son's name from this important work that they clearly feel passionate about.

It's also a strong and unique name without being bizarre, and I actually really like it. Of course it's also a pretty big name, and where exactly do you go with a nickname? Liv is pretty great one, but with a son already named Levi, 4, that could get a tad confusing. I'm sure they'll figure it out though.

As for sister Vida, almost 3, she gets to remain the sole princess of the family, which isn't a bad title to hold. For all of the craziness that two brothers can bring, there's definitely something to be said for that.

What do you think of Matthew McConaughey's son's name? Are you surprised it's a boy?

Uganda: Childbirth Is Not the End - Mothers Still Need Lots of Care

The story of Christmas' miraculous birth of Jesus in a cowshed stops after the baby is born. Even for many people, the first cry of a baby at birth, to many, signifies that the mother's battle is over. The baby is born, all is well.

However, it is not always so, as a mother still needs a lot of attention and could die during the postnatal stage. "The postnatal stage is the period immediately after the birth of a child. It extends for about six weeks," Dr Judith Ajeani, an obstetrician with Mulago Referral Hospital explains.

During the postnatal period, a woman may develop life threatening complications. According to the 2006 Uganda Development Health Survey (UDHS), evidence has shown that a large proportion of deaths occur during this period, with bleeding and infections being important causes.

Therefore, a postnatal visit to the hospital is crucial and an ideal time to educate a new mother on how to care for herself and her newborn. "The six weeks is when the mother needs the most care and special attention, just as much as the newborn baby," Ajeani explains.

Unfortunately, in numerous communities, the complications of childbirth are considered over as soon as the baby pops out. "A healthy baby does not mean the mother is fi ne. That is why there is the six-week period for them to get back to normal," says Eve Nakabembe, an obstetrician at Mulago Hospital.

Prof. Pius Okong, the chairperson of Health Service Commission, says in Uganda, of the ten women who die from pregnancy-related complications, two die from abortion complications infections such as malaria, or cases of high blood pressure.

"The causes of death for the remaining eight can be split between those dying during birth and those dying during the postnatal stage," Okong explains.

Therefore, approximately four out of every eight women who die due to pregnancy-related complications die during the postnatal period. According to Okong, the number is not exact because not all deaths are registered, considering that a number of mothers deliver away from a health facility and deaths may occur at home or at the homes of traditional birth attendants.

The death of a new mother usually reduces the survival chances of the baby. Overall, in Uganda, maternal mortality ratio, which is defined as the number of women who die during pregnancy and childbirth, per 100,000 live births, is 438, according to the 2011 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS), up from 435 in 2006.

Postnatal deaths, Okong notes, are worst in rural areas where many women do not get any medical follow up after delivery. Nakabembe adds that nonetheless, every pregnant mother, even in the urban areas, is potentially at risk of dying during the postnatal period, if care is not taken.

"A mother who has delivered at a health facility should stay around the facility from up to at least 24 hours after, so they can be monitored for danger signs such as excessive bleeding that could lead to their death," says Ajeani.

After discharge from the health facility, a mother is expected to return for a checkup within seven days of delivery. Mothers who deliver outside a health facility are expected to seek postnatal care immediately after giving birth, within the fi rst six hours.

For all mothers, the next follow-up visit is recommended within the fi rst seven days and then within six weeks, when mothers bring their infants for immunisation.

However, on average, in rural areas, only 20% of new mothers return to the hospital for a follow up in the first seven days or so, and even fewer at six weeks.

Regarding regions, postnatal care from a doctor, nurse, or midwife is highest in Kampala, at 57%, but lowest in the southwest region (Kisoro, Kabale, Ntungamo, among others), at 18%.

Nonetheless, according to the UDHS report of 2011, the percentage of women who have had postnatal visits in the two days after birth has increased over the last fi ve years, from 26% in 2006 to 33% in 2011.

The percentage of mothers who did not receive any postnatal checkup declined from 74% in 2006 to 64 % in 2011, which is still high.

Nakabembe notes that bleeding is the leading cause of deaths from pregnancy- related complications at 25%. She blames the critical 24-hour window after birth.

"The 24-hour window is the most dangerous and requires attention of a trained health worker. With the shortage of human resource, if one midwife is in charge of 12 mothers or more, they are not in position to pay critical attention to that woman overly bleeding."

Furthermore, a mother could pass away as a result of infections, having had undue risk to infections during pregnancy or around delivery time. Ajeani explains that infections account for 13% of maternal deaths. She says the length of period a woman has been in labour also determines the level of her risk to infections.

"If a woman has stayed in labour for long, for example for a day, she is more likely to get infections which spill over to the postnatal period. The infections are caused by bacteria that live within her system, but during the process of childbirth, move upwards from their private parts up to the birth canal and into the bloodstream," Ajeani explains.

Further, malaria is a common killer of mothers after delivery. They are easy prey since their immunity system is low. Nakabembe says malaria is ommon in fi rst time mothers, second time mothers, adolescent mothers and HIV-positive mothers.

Furthermore is delivery from a non-health facility. Nakabembe notes that a big percentage of postnatal complications can be predicted at the health facility by the trained health worker because they build up during the pregnancy.

However, in cases of unskilled persons helping the mother deliver, the complications which could have been predicted build up unnoticed.

How to know something is not right

After giving birth, a mother can be in position to tell if something is amiss, judging by a number of signs.

HEADACHE

Headache due to insufficient sleep is normal. However, persistent headache after enough sleep, fluids and food is cause for worry and should be checked out by medical personnel.

BLEEDING

Nakabembe notes that the biggest killer of women during the postnatal period is bleeding; "It could kill even within the rst two hours of delivery."

Furthermore, after birth, Okong notes that bleeding excessively with big clots or pieces of blood is abnormal.

"After delivery, clots should stop. Also, if the bleeding is more than her monthly period, six hours after delivery, the mother should contact the medical personnel," he advises. Okong also notes that losing blood makes the body's resistance to infection weak.

TEMPERATURES

Excessive sweating is abnormal.

PASSING OUT

After delivery, if a woman feels like she might faint because of hunger, it is normal. However, if the condition persists, even after a cup of tea, then something is amiss.

SMELLING

A foul odour after birth, whether at C-section site or private parts is abnormal.

SWOLLEN BREASTS

Swelling of the whole breast, when the breasts full up with milk, is normal, however, swelling at one particular spot with pain could point to an infection.

STOOL AND URINE

If a woman is not able to pass stool or urine for more than 24hours after birth, she should consult medical personnel.

BODY SWELLING

Okong explains that the body cannot get rid of all the accumulated water during pregnancy immediately, hence some swelling after delivery. However, he warns that if the swelling goes on for more than seven days, alongside general

body weakness, it could point to high blood pressure.

Okong notes that the new mother should follow the instructions from the health worker, including looking out for abnormal signs they are warned about, or signs they find suspicious.

Since welcoming son Brooks Alan, new mom Molly Sims is having a ball showing off all things baby, including the cozy and whimsical nursery she created to suit her whole family’s needs.

So while attending the launch of the Restoration Hardware Baby & Child gallery in Santa Monica, Calif. on Nov. 10, Sims enjoyed browsing the brand’s new Bespoke Collection – a line of bedding featuring 16 rich garment-dyed colors that can be mix and matched for a custom feel — and the handcrafted wool and cotton rugs from Ben Soleimani.

But the model really fell in love with the Sterling Silver Personalized Toggle Necklace ($219) the company engraved with Brooks’ name and gifted her at the event.

Now even when she’s not nestled up with her 6-month-old, Sims can still stay connected to her little boy thanks to this special piece from their beautiful jewelry collection.

Shakira's Fake Baby Birth Announcement Was Either Hilarious or Very, Very Cruel

Shakira

Hey, everyone, Shakira gave birth to a set of twins, boy and girl, and her parents named them Hips and Lie. Bwahahaha! Jooooooke. Okay, that's not super funny, but just getting back at Shakira's boyfriend, Gerard Pique, who pulled his own little prank on the masses about Shakira's hip bursting belly with child.

On Thursday, Gerard tweeted that Shakira had given birth. I'd link to the exact tweet, but I don't speak Spanish. Sorry! So he and Shakira began getting congratulations from around the globe.

But oooooohhhhh wait a gosh darn second. She still looked preggo! In fact, she only announced her pregnancy in September! What on earth is going on here? Turns out it was Dia de los Inocentes, the Spanish equivalent of April Fool's Day, translated as Spain's Holy Day of the Innocents.

Gerard made clear his humorous intentions when he then tweeted out (in Spanish): "It has a name! His name is Innocent! Happy April Fool's Day to all!"

Okay, some jokes are kind of lame. My worst April Fool's joke happened when I was about 16. I sat my mom down and very somberly broke the news that I was pregnant. My mom burst into tears -- I don't think they were happy tears, but I'm not sure. I was so flabbergasted that I immediately exclaimed, "April Fool's!!!" rather than let it drag on. I wasn't much for April Fool's jokes after that.

What was your weirdest April Fool's joke?
