A mountain of cool gift ideas from the Adirondacks

A mountain of cool gift ideas from the Adirondacks

I have never been to Glens Falls, NY--and to be honest, I hadn't actually heard of it either. But after discovering this amazing little shop that's a celebration of everything that indie small-town America stands for, I'm ready to road trip up there. Or at least hit the website for some cool stuff.

Nine Authentic Goods, named for main thoroughfare Route 9, is a bona fide small town shop in the best possible way, filled with cool vintage-inspired items almost entirely designed, produced, and crafted right in their community.

There are cool items for men, women and kids, but I think the things I love most are the vintage style baseball caps proclaiming your affinity to various mountains in the region, not sports teams. That's a super cool gift for the outdoorsy type in your family, wherever they might live.

You should also check out the vintage Adirondack Mountain postcards, which make cool holiday gifts for the right person, plus a few seriously delicious-looking gourmet food gifts from local purveyors. (They had me at Spicy Maple Almonds.) They've even got some cool clothes for adults and kids, plus pretty jewelry from local artists at nice prices.

You're going to want those nice prices, by the way. Because if you're like me, you'll want save a little for a weekend at a cool B&B so you can visit Nine Authentic Goods yourself. -Liz

For holiday gifts with small town style, take a trip to Glens Falls and visit Nine Authentic Goods. Need more cool gift ideas? Don't miss our 2012 Holiday Gift Guide!

The Zoos Are All Aglow for the Holidays

The zoos are all aglow for the holidays, and local families have some great options for a festive evening outing - one new and one tried-and-true.

Woodland Park Zoo WildLights Festival

Woodland Park Zoo is illuminated in a whole new light now that its first ever winter lights festival, WildLights, made its debut. The sparkling, after-hours event continues nightly through Jan. 1, when approximately 375,000 energy-efficient LED lights recreate wild animals and wild places in two and three dimensions along the zoo’s pathways.

Here is a look at what Seattle's Child parent reviewer Isabel Sanden thought:

“Mom! Look! Look! Look!” exclaimed a back row full of kids at their first glimpse of WildLights, the Woodland Park Zoo’s new holiday light festival.  “Everything is sparkling!”

And truly, everything was.

I turned around to see their faces aglow with wonder.  Bright smiles reflected the brilliance of the lights they gazed upon.  Their sense of amazement was infectious, and my husband and I laughed at our own excitement of seeing our Seattle zoo decorated for the holidays.

Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium Zoolights

Zoolights, a Tacoma holiday-season tradition at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium since 1988, has for years brought light to the night and a warm glow to visitors’ hearts. This festival boasts more than 80 lighted zoo-animal figurines and multiple-piece scenes, camel rides and more.

Here is a look at what Seattle's Child parent reviewer Kelly Rogers Flynt thought:

With more than a half million shining lights, Zoolights at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is truly a sight to behold.  A holiday tradition for 25 years, this event shows no signs of slowing down.  An evening stroll to view the lights is a great way to spend some family time together during this busy season.

The light show is quite spectacular.  My kids especially enjoyed the exhibits with animals lit in sequence to make it appear as if they are moving.  Because there is a slight delay between each sequence, you can’t rush through without risking missing a treat.  The only thing that my kids seemed to tire of was the frequent parental request for them to stop for photos.

A Parent’s Review:  Zoolights at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium

With more than a half million shining lights, Zoolights at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is truly a sight to behold.  A holiday tradition for 25 years, this event shows no signs of slowing down.  An evening stroll to view the lights is a great way to spend some family time together during this busy season.

Kids have the opportunity to add to the lights with the purchase of light sabers, lighted wands and glowing headbands.  If your little one gets tired of walking, he or she can take a ride on a camel or the carousel for an extra fee.  The line for the camel can be a little long and slow.  Luckily it is right across from a concession stand with plenty of goodies and hot chocolate to enjoy while you wait.

If you forgot your camera, the zoo is happy to snap a photo of your little one atop the camel for a small fee.  While the ride is short, my 8-year old was still happy to wait for her turn.  With the Zoolights sparkling in her eyes, she said, “when I woke up this morning, I had no idea I would get to ride a camel today.”  So yeah, I’d say it was worth the wait, too.  If camels and carousels are still too slow for your taste, the zoo has just opened a new zip line course, ZOOM, that’s sure to bring a thrill.  ZOOM is also open during Zoolights.

So pace yourselves parents, every corner brings a new photo opportunity, and it may be too much to try and get them all.  My daughter was particularly happy that they used all the colors of lights.  Her favorite light display was a green and purple tree.

If it turns drizzly, the aquarium offers a special treat for visitors as well; a scuba-diving Santa is there to swim with the sharks (Tuesday and Wednesday evenings only).  The show is quite entertaining, but little ones in strollers will need to be fairly close to the front to be able to see well.  Additionally, some of the animals are still on exhibit during Zoolights and some of those areas provide a respite from the weather as well.  If you haven’t already met the zoo’s two new tiger cubs, Dumai and Berani, they are a must see.  Tigers don’t stay little for long, so be sure to make your way over to the Asian Forest Sanctuary to see these guys.

Zoolights has something for everyone, and possibly more than you can do in one visit unless you plan carefully.  The light show itself is enough reason for a visit.  The extras are great, but can easily turn your night out into an expensive outing.  As always, you can bring your own food into the zoo, and that’s one great way to save a little.

Regardless of whether you go just to see the lights or to do it all, Zoolights is bound to be one of the highlights of your holiday season.

Kenya: An Abortion That Got Rid of Too Much

Lydiah Kagere could not go about her business without glancing back. She imagined that everybody knew her secret and that they were all talking about her. She had lost a part of her body that some women would shield with their lives. Here is how it all began.

The now married woman and stepmother lost her uterus after getting an abortion when she was a third-year student at a Kenyan university. The knowledge that she would never have her own children shattered her. "This was devastating news, though the medical surgeons explained to me that it was the only way to save my life," says Lydiah in a recent interview.

Not ready to parent

During her university days, she had used the morning-after pill, locally known as the 'abortion pill', many times. Her boyfriend was two years her junior and, as she put it, they were not ready to be parents while in college.

"We had unprotected sex many times, but I always kept a morning-after pill to protect me from getting pregnant," says Lydiah, adding she has never understood why the pill did not work that day. "We had to think fast when I told my boyfriend I was three months pregnant. We had to make a conclusive decision: to compromise my studies and be a young mother, or to get rid of the unborn baby."

The two young minds settled on terminating the pregnancy. To procure an abortion in the 'back clinics', as students referred to places where illegal abortions were procured, would cost 2,000 Kenyan shillings. This they raised very fast. And before long, they had identified a nurse in one of the back streets in Nairobi.

Painful, disgusting and degrading

"The clinic looked ghostly and a cloud of death seemed to be hanging heavily," Lydiah recalls with a look of disgust.

The male nurse roughly pushed her into an inner room and told her to remove her clothes. Her boyfriend waited outside. "How many months are you pregnant?" the nurse asked without the slightest sign of sympathy. That month would be the fourth, Lydiah replied, and the nurse nodded knowingly.

For a moment, she thought to change her mind, but an inner voice reminded her she had a career to pursue. "I wish I ran out of that room that minute and reported the nurse to the police," she says.

She describes the abortion process as painful, disgusting and degrading. Something that looked like a pair of scissors was inserted into her and then came an excruciating pain. "I screamed and jumped up, but the nurse pinned me down on the bed, saying that he did not have time to waste," she recalls.

After what seemed like eternity, the nurse concluded the procedure. He told her she would experience "a little pain" in her abdomen a few hours later and then the foetus would be discharged. "You had better not be alone, because you may get very thirsty after the foetus comes out," he warned.

Back in her room, where she had asked her boyfriend to keep a close watch, things went as well as had been expected. The only difference, Lydiah says, was that the sensation was terrible. She writhed in pain for almost two hours before the foetus came out.

"I wish I bore that pain for a good cause, if only I had got the baby ... the story would be different today," Lydiah laments. She put the foetus in a polythene bag and her boyfriend disposed of it in a public pit latrine near the college.

Back to school

The student returned to her university life after the episode and dismissed abdominal pain as an after-effect of the abortion. The nurse had told her not to worry about the bleeding, which could last a week, although she was advised to return to the clinic should it become heavy.

"While the bleeding stopped in the one week, I noticed some smelly, creamy substance oozing from my womanhood," Lydiah recalls. The stench was unbearable. She decided to go back to the nurse. This time she was accompanied by a girlfriend because her boyfriend had started getting dodgy. They found that the nurse was away and two more attempts to reach him bore no fruits.

To be continued ...

Jada Pinkett Smith: Lay Off Willow’s Hair!

Adriana Lima Pregnant In Pirelli Calendar
Kevin Winter/Getty

Whether daughter Willow is whipping it back and forth or cutting it all off, Jada Pinkett Smith is committed to allowing her  daughter wear her hair any way she chooses.

The actress and mom of two took to her Facebook page to address critics of her parenting style, particularly those who questioned why she “let” her 12-year-old chop off her locks and sport a super-short style a few months ago.

“This is a world where women, girls are constantly reminded that they don’t belong to themselves; that their bodies are not their own, nor their power or self determination,” she writes.

Pinkett Smith, also mother to Jaden, 14, continues: “Willow cut her hair because her beauty, her value, her worth is not measured by the length of her hair.”

She also added that “even little girls have the RIGHT to own themselves and should not be a slave to even their mother’s deepest insecurities, hopes and desires.”

And it sounds like she has husband Will Smith‘s full support. “When you have a little girl, it’s like how can you teach her that you’re in control of her body?” the actor told Parade earlier this year.

“If I teach her that I’m in charge of whether or not she can touch her hair, she’s going to replace me with some other man when she goes out in the world.”

Nigeria: Physician Warns Parents On Early Child Marriage

Abuja — Dr Patrick Okolie, an Abuja based, general medical practitioner, has advised parents, who still practice early child marriage, to have a change of heart, as it could endanger the child's whole life.

Okolie in Abuja on Tuesday said that early child marriage exposed young girls to Vesico Vagina Fistula (VVF).

According to the doctors, VVF is an abnormal fistulous tract extending between the bladder and the vagina that allows the continuous involuntary discharge of urine into the vaginal vault.

He said the condition was one of the two common obstetric fistulas that were found in the developing world like Nigeria.

"It is generally associated with early age of childbirth and marriage, which is more common in the some states.

"The average age of occurrence of VVF in Nigeria, especially in the Northern part of the country, is about 11 years to 15 years of age," he said.

According to the doctor, it is associated with early pregnancy and unskilled or unattended childbirth.

He said, "So when unskilled birth attendants take delivery or the delivery is unattended, it usually leads to prolonged labour and other complications, which ultimately results in the development of the fistula.

"During prolonged labour, the vessels and the tissues that lie in the birth canal would be compressed, they lose their blood supply and develop holes," he said.

He said basically, a simple definition of fistula is a hole connecting two cavities or two vessels in the body.

"So the vesico vagina fistula is the communication between the bladder and urethra in front and the vaginal behind.

"When a fistula forms between these two organs or tissues that is when you have vesico vaginal fistula and the common presentation is that the person will be leaking urine through the vaginal," he said.

Okolie said that the other type of fistula was recto vagina fistula, which is the opening between the rectum and vagina that allow both flatulence (causing excessive gas faitus to be created in the stomach and intestines) faeces to escape through the vagina.

"The vesico vagina fistula accounts for high percentage of maternal mortality in Nigeria.

"It also accounts for over 75 per cent of baby lose and has complications which may be present after delivery, as the husband may not want to associate with the wife," he said.

He also said it was responsible for the high rate of divorce in some of these places where young women suffering from vesico vagina fistula were victimised.

"Rape and female genital mutilation were also associated with vesico vagina fistula.

"So these are some of the effects of vesico vagina fistula," he said.

According to the doctor, the treatment is surgical, there will have to be a surgical repair of the fistula, opening has to be closed.

He said, "This is usually done by a qualified obstetricians and Gynaecologists (O and G) doctors.

"So when a woman develops fistula, she will have to see a gynaecologist, who will determine the extent of the damage and what kind of surgical repair needed."

He, however, said that analysing the causes could determine how best such patient would be treated.

Okolie also explained that the major cause was early age of child birth, and that if a woman was not fully developed and the pelvic not fully matured.

"It will mean that the birth canal is not big and then a normal weight for a child passing through this birth canal is what will compress these organs or vessels," he said.

He explained that preventing or allowing our female children to reach age of maturity before going into marriage and child birth was one major means of prevention.

"Another means of prevention is also about unskilled birth attendants in all deliveries. When a woman is pregnant, she should attend antenatal care with qualified practitioner or medical personnel.

"She should also make sure that the deliveries are taken by either skilled birth attendants or qualified medical professionals.

He advised that any complications noticed either during the period of pregnancy or at deliveries, should also be managed by qualified medical professionals.

"This way vesico fistula and other complications can be prevented.

"Health care is important and not just for fistula alone, but for other conditions, many complications can be prevented," he said.

He said that through knowledge and information, the disease could also be prevented, adding that attending or receiving medical care is not as expensive as it used to be.

"There are many interventions now.

"Like the National Health Insurance Scheme NHIS, it makes health care relatively affordable for everybody," he said.

Okolie advised people to make use of this intervention by visiting hospitals when they have health challenges so that they don't wait until complications set in.

"People should make use of the available health resources and go to hospitals on time to prevent complications and also in cases of VVF, most of the cases result from prolonged labour.

"So if a woman with such condition is having difficulty in delivery, she should be referred quickly to qualified professional or obstetricians and gynaecologist," he said.

He said that doing that could guarantee that such patients would be managed on time to avoid more complications.

"We all know that the level of poverty is a problem in Nigeria, it does not benefit any one, if your ward or your daughter gets married at early.

"And then develops a complication that may affect her for the rest of her life," he said.

He said it was better to allow our young ones to be fully matured so that they could endure both the physical and psychological challenges of both marriage and child birth.

Traffic Pollution Could Put Your Baby at Greater Risk of Autism

pollutionAnother day, another study telling us what may or may not cause autism? Well, yes, but this one that links autism with exposure to traffic pollution during pregnancy or the first year of a child's life seems to have some serious legs.

According to a study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, researchers found that pregnant women exposed to high levels of pollution were as much as two to three times more likely to have a child with autism than those with the lowest exposure. That's a huge difference, and it's not the first time such a link has been found.

The strongest link was an exposure to nitrogen dioxide, which is found in high levels around freeways. Families living within 1,000 feet of a freeway were found to have the highest risk. So does that mean if you live in a high-traffic area, you should move the minute you get pregnant?

Researchers say it's not that simple ... like always. Heather Volk, lead author of the study, told Time:

We’re not saying that air pollution causes autism. We’re saying it may be a risk factor for autism. Autism is a complex disorder and it’s likely there are many factors contributing.

Time also points out that while autism rates have skyrocketed over the years, the levels of the pollutants measured in the study have stayed pretty much the same. So once again we're left with a new fear of something that may or may not alter our children's lives. We're left with possible regrets and what ifs about where we choose to live or how we commute to work. We're left with a whole lot more questions and no real answers.

It's easy to get frustrated I think, as these studies come out so regularly. A couple of weeks ago it was the flu during pregnancy freaking everyone out. Autism has also been linked to everything from vaccines to a lack of prenatal vitamins to the food we eat.

Instead of being frustrated or living in fear of each new piece of information, however, we should look at the findings with hope (as difficult as that may be). The fact that they are finding links and that studies continue to probe into this mystifying disorder is positive. While each one individually may not change lives, together, hopefully, they'll all come together one day to give us the answers we need to prevent and possibly even cure autism.

Growing Fresh Air with 8 Powerful Plants

Blog

By Janelle Sorensen, Healthy Child Advisory Board  and Margie Kelly, Communications Manager

Did you realize the average American spends 90 percent of his time indoors? That’s a lot of time. Unbelievably, air pollution inside your home or office can be worse than the pollution outside, which is why the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ranks indoor air quality as one of the top five environmental risks to public health.

There are many things you can do to clean up the air in your home. First, stop buying products made with toxic chemicals that pollute your living space. Products like air fresheners, vinyl flooring, pressed wood made with formaldehyde, and harsh solvents fill your air with nasty chemicals that harm your health.

Ventilating your home by opening a window, even if it’s for just a few minutes a day, will improve your indoor air quality.

Also, placing common household plants in various rooms of your home is a way to grow fresh air!

Researcher Kamal Meattle discovered that three common houseplants, used strategically throughout a home, could vastly improve the indoor air quality.

Here's the breakdown:

Areca Palm is "The Living Room Plant" - This plant is a daytime oxygen factory and Meattle recommends having 4 shoulder height plants per person.

Mother-in-Law's Tongue is "The Bedroom Plant" - This plant is an evening oxygen factory and Meattle recommends having 6-8 waist-high plants per person.

Money Plant is "The Specialist Plant" - This plant is the filter that removes formaldehyde and other volatile organic chemicals from the air.

These three household plants will certainly improve your indoor air quality, even if you don't have quite so many. And, if you're not satisfied with just three options, other new research has identified five "super ornamentals" that demonstrated high effectiveness of contaminant removal.

These include the purple waffle plant (Hemigraphis alternataa), English ivy (Hedera Helix), variegated wax plant (Hoya cornosa), Asparagus fern (Asparagus densiflorus) and the Purple heart plant (Tradescantia pallida). [Remember to check all plants for toxicity to dogs and cats via the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).

Of the 28 plants tested, these five were effective at reducing levels of a number of common household VOCs, including benzene, toluene, octane, alpha-pinene and TCE. The work, funded by the University of Georgia's Agricultural Experiment Stations, was published in the August 2009 issue of HortScience.

Ready to grow your own fresh air? NASA studies recommend that you use one good-sized houseplant in a 6 to 8-inch diameter container for every 100 square feet of your home. Though, additional research is being done to identify exactly how many of each type of species is necessary for remediation (as in Meattle's work). You should also be sure to keep the foliage clean and dust free (so the leaves can do their job). And, keep the top of soil clean and free of debris, as in some cases, that's where the bulk of the filtering is taking place.

The healthier your plants, the more vigorously they'll grow, and the better they'll clean the air for you.

Are you concerned about indoor air quality? What steps have you taken to improve the air in your home or office?

I think that incorporating nature into your home is a great idea. We all share air and water! And honestly,  if you dont grow your air who will?  Frito Lays,  Aquafinia? F** that! be accountable for yourself.  and hey i think we all should be trying anything we can to improve our enviornments ALL THE TIME. little things add up when theyres so many people on one earth.  Good little things or bad little things…

Posted by Greg  on  10/23/2010  at  03:11 AM

Some of the listed plants are toxic to cats,  English ivy & asparagus plant, so use caution if you have any pets.

Posted by fillip  on  10/17/2010  at  11:34 AM

what about opening a window? being allergic to air has a similar cause like all allergies ... keeping ourselves away from nature. just like a baby that’s too clean will become allergic to all kinds of stuff being afraid of the outside makes us allergic to indoor air. I can make sense of using these plants in a space station, but actually suggesting to improve the quality of air with plants in your home is ridiculous. And if you find the air outside harmful too maybe you should move out of your beloved megacity or buy a hybrid

Posted by Rebekah  on  10/02/2010  at  04:25 PM

Mother-in-laws tongue and Snake plants aren’t actually the same plant, they are similar though the Mother-in-laws tongue is much smaller of the two.

Though another good tip is to look up plants you want to buy to see if they are poisonous to your pets or children, English Ivy, for instance is highly toxic to dogs and Foxglove makes your heart beat slower and harder and also can kill you.

Always try to talk with a local nursery to see what kind of plants would be good for your home.

Posted by solartronenergy  on  08/28/2010  at  02:51 AM

Okay, it’s great that people can grow plants in their house and improve air quality (not a little known fact btw), but that is an excessive number of plants. Most people barely have room for their furniture, let alone “6-8 waist high plants per person”.

Posted by solar hot water  on  08/14/2010  at  04:29 AM

I wonder if these house plants will really improve the air quality for everyone, including people with certain allergies. I think they’re worth trying, though.

Posted by sylvia yang  on  08/06/2010  at  09:29 AM

I always heard that it is a bad idea to put plants in a bedroom because they release co2 at night?  also what if we put fertilizer in the soil are we ending up breezing the chemicals?

Posted by Spanky  on  08/05/2010  at  02:42 PM

Any of these plants harmful to pets at all?

Posted by miami web design  on  08/04/2010  at  10:42 AM

i have a few of these at the office

Posted by steven  on  08/03/2010  at  11:59 AM

4 of the plants you mention i keep around the office. Great “zen” like environment. love the article

When I went to the local nursery and asked for the areca palm, the gardner said he tries not to keep too many around because they are prone to bugs.  He said it’s a big job keeping them bug-free.  Just wondering if there are other palms that have the same benefits.

Posted by anthony pittarelli  on  05/11/2010  at  12:35 AM

totally agree, even with being an avid plant owner and having a house full(25) of plants

Posted by Benjamin Koshkin  on  05/07/2010  at  02:49 PM

The idea is great, but for a large family it’s not practical.

I do know Philodendron does provide formaldehyde removal, so that may be the ‘money plant’.  Mother in Law Tongue is also known as a Snake plant.

What’s wonderful about both the Mother in Law Tongue AND the Philodendron is that both can easily be propagated from cuttings. After cutting the Philodendron can be placed in a bottle or glass of water and after a few weeks roots should grow.
The snake plant cutting can be placed directly in soil but kept moist.

So, although it takes longer for the plants to grow as opposed to buying them from a nursery, its cheaper and perhaps more exciting to grow them yourself.

Posted by Holly  on  04/21/2010  at  05:01 AM

Would it be possible to specify which particular species of plants these are?

Common names are ambiguous; apparently, the palm name speaks of an entire genus, and as far as I can tell, there are more than one species bearing the nickname “money plant/tree”

Consequently, I’m not quite sure which plants I should be looking into purchasing. ^_^;

Posted by Janelle Sorensen  on  03/26/2010  at  09:34 AM

TheAL - I’m not positive about care guidelines for all of these plants, but I know Mother-in-Law’s Tongue thrives in low light. We’ve had these plants for years and years and they are incredibly tolerant plants (just don’t over-water). They’re also very easy to find at garden centers and nurseries.

Posted by TheAL  on  03/26/2010  at  06:10 AM

This is a great. I’d love a living room plant. Do any of these thrive in the shade or with little light? Thank you!

Posted by VickyC.me  on  01/17/2010  at  03:44 PM

I want the Mother-in-law’s tongue one.. and a money plant!
I guess it’s time to go to the flower store! :)
This is a really insightful article! Thank you! :)

Posted by PJ  on  01/15/2010  at  12:03 AM

You can never have too many plants. I am starting to look for some of these.  I already have a couple.

Posted by Janelle Sorensen  on  01/12/2010  at  08:06 AM

Kamal Meattle’s recommendation would indeed mean having roughly a dozen large plants per person, but his study (and needs) were very extreme. Living in the heart of one of the most polluted cities in the world, he literally needed to grow his own fresh air in order to survive. The average American home certainly doesn’t need so many.

Posted by Erin  on  01/07/2010  at  07:40 PM

As someone who loves all things natural and green, I thought this was really cool insight into how to help ourselves without cleaners and fear.  Rock on!

Posted by Emily Lynne Ion  on  01/07/2010  at  02:09 PM

Hi Jared,

I would agree that 22 houseplants is excessive!  I think its the strategic placement, per every 100 square feet in the house, that is most crucial.  Though he did suggest multiple plants to get the benefits of “Mother in Law’s Tongue”, I wouldn’t turn your bedroom into a hothouse!  Think more about the placement rather than the quantity.

Thanks!

So if I just want o2 and nothing that helps filter the air of certain toxins, this guy is suggesting that for me and my wife, being a household of 2, we have at LEAST 22 houseplants? I love plants but damn, it seems an Ionic breeze would be an easier option.

One thing you can do to make a difference for millions of women. And it's free.

One thing you can do to make a difference for millions of women. And it's free.

As some of you know, I recently spent a week in Ethiopia with the amazing organization ONE, specifically to see the tangible good that foreign aid is doing for mothers and families around the globe. The amazing thing about ONE is that they never ask for your money--only your voice. And that voice matters indeed.

I'd love if you can take 30 seconds (really!) out of your day to do one little thing for them--and for all mothers--in honor of Giving Tuesday. And it won't cost you a dime. Only about 30 seconds.

My small request: Please sign this petition to Congress to help save women's lives in light of the Fiscal Cliff.

8 million people are on life-saving AIDS treatment today, and we cannot risk budget cuts to global AIDS programs that would mean 21,000 more babies born with HIV a year, and six times that many who could become AIDS orphans.

That translates not just to another health crisis, but more foreign aid being spent later for military intervention; when the infrastructure (not to mention actual people) is weakened in these countries, the number of productive workers dwindles, incomes decrease, and the populations become vulnerable.

In other words, make healthy babies, not war.

Sign the petition now; I know you won't regret it.

And if you have an extra minute or two, check out this beautiful video featuring the amazing women I traveled with.

You're sure to recognize some of your favorite bloggers. (You'll even catch a few glimpses of yours truly.) We are from all around the world, of every background, every political denomination, with all kinds of views. The one thing we have in common--we are mothers committed to supporting other mothers. Like I know our readers are too. -Liz

For more information and to keep up with the awesome things ONE is doing, I urge you to sign up to join the ONE moms. It will never cost you a dime.

Brother and Sister Have Babies on the Same Day in the Same Hospital Much to Grandma's Delight

handsMandy Williams could not wait to become a grandmother, but she never really expected that she'd welcome both of her grandchildren on the same day!

But that's exactly what happened when her daughter and son both had babies in the very same maternity ward at the hospital, and pretty much went through the whole labor and delivery process at exactly the same time.

Little Mabli Elin Stokes and Hallie Rose Jones are reportedly doing well, and their grandma couldn't be happier or more proud.

And while Mandy was only able to be physically present for the birth of one of the babies due to the timing, she still says that having both grandbabies arrive on the same day was "amazing," and said the whole experience "felt like a real family occasion." (Man, I'll say!)

It must have been a regular party in the maternity ward that day, and while it was a joyous experience for Mandy, it had to be pretty special for her daughter and son too.

I am an only child, so I'll never really be able to relate to the bond that exists between siblings, but I imagine going through the birth of your children together is a pretty special thing. It's not every day that you welcome a daughter into the family and then go down the hall to meet your niece right after that!

Of course, there is the chance that one of the moms may have felt like her moment was stolen a bit, but I'm sure cradling her new baby in her arms was more than enough of a consolation prize.

The fact that these two little beauties arrived on the same day is awesome enough, but making the experience even more exciting is that they both went home from the hospital on the very same day as well. Judging from the way things have gone so far, it'll be a big shock if these two don't grow up as best friends who do everything together. As far as having a lot in common goes, they're off to a great start!

Do you think having a baby on the same day as your sibling would be special, or steal your thunder a little bit?

Some of the listed plants are toxic to cats,  English ivy & asparagus plant, so use caution if you have any pets.

what about opening a window? being allergic to air has a similar cause like all allergies ... keeping ourselves away from nature. just like a baby that’s too clean will become allergic to all kinds of stuff being afraid of the outside makes us allergic to indoor air. I can make sense of using these plants in a space station, but actually suggesting to improve the quality of air with plants in your home is ridiculous. And if you find the air outside harmful too maybe you should move out of your beloved megacity or buy a hybrid

Okay, it’s great that people can grow plants in their house and improve air quality (not a little known fact btw), but that is an excessive number of plants. Most people barely have room for their furniture, let alone “6-8 waist high plants per person”.

I wonder if these house plants will really improve the air quality for everyone, including people with certain allergies. I think they’re worth trying, though.

I always heard that it is a bad idea to put plants in a bedroom because they release co2 at night?  also what if we put fertilizer in the soil are we ending up breezing the chemicals?

When I went to the local nursery and asked for the areca palm, the gardner said he tries not to keep too many around because they are prone to bugs.  He said it’s a big job keeping them bug-free.  Just wondering if there are other palms that have the same benefits.

totally agree, even with being an avid plant owner and having a house full(25) of plants

Would it be possible to specify which particular species of plants these are?

Common names are ambiguous; apparently, the palm name speaks of an entire genus, and as far as I can tell, there are more than one species bearing the nickname “money plant/tree”

Consequently, I’m not quite sure which plants I should be looking into purchasing. ^_^;

This is a great. I’d love a living room plant. Do any of these thrive in the shade or with little light? Thank you!

I want the Mother-in-law’s tongue one.. and a money plant!
I guess it’s time to go to the flower store! :)
This is a really insightful article! Thank you! :)

You can never have too many plants. I am starting to look for some of these.  I already have a couple.

As someone who loves all things natural and green, I thought this was really cool insight into how to help ourselves without cleaners and fear.  Rock on!
