POLICE at Mariental on Wednesday night arrested 19-year-old man for allegedly stabbing to death his 16-year-old pregnant girlfriend. The deceased was identified as Sara van der Westhuisen.
Deputy Police Commissioner Johanna Situde said the stabbing happened outside Van der Westhuisen's mother's house in the Aimablaagte residential area.
It is alleged that the suspect had asked the girl to come out of the house and then started stabbing her repeatedly.
Witnesses told the police that the girl ran to the house next door for help, but the suspect followed her into the house and allegedly continued stabbing her while she was hugging her neighbour, said Situde.
Situde said Van der Westhuisen was stabbed five times in the head and chest.
A suicide note found on the suspect after his arrest on the same night indicated that he had planned to murder his girlfriend before committing suicide.
It is suspected that the suspect had planned to hang himself with a rope that was found in his trouser pocket.
The suspect claimed in the suicide note that alleged interference by his girlfriend's mother in their relationship had led to his actions.
The name of the suspect cannot be published as he has not appeared in court yet.
