Dar es Salaam — Despite efforts by the government and other stakeholders to reduce maternal deaths the efforts are not paying off, according to latest reports.

This was said in Dar es Salaam yesterday during the release of the 2010/11 Baseline Evaluation Report on an integrated maternal, newborn and child health programme conducted in Morogoro.

Speaking to journalists at a workshop on dissemination of findings from the Morogoro Evaluation Project, the deputy chancellor of Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (Muhas), Prof Eligius Lyamuya, said despite concerted efforts, maternal deaths were still a big problem in the country.

He said the report found that most of the maternal deaths were due to preventable causes which could easily be averted by the society if it had enough knowledge on the matter.

"Involving society in fighting maternal deaths is crucial because most women die between one to two weeks after delivery, a period when they are with their families," he said.

Prof Lyamuya said there was a need for society to understand risks and dangerous symptoms to newborn babies and mothers so as to be in a position to provide life-saving assistance when needed. For his part, the director of the programme Mr Chrisostom Lipingu said the decrease in use of family planning and the habit of not attending clinics for health checks during pregnancy and after delivery, have been cited as major causes of maternal and newborn deaths.

"The report shows only 31 per cent of women visit clinics within 48 hours after delivery, this is a problem because this is a crucial stage when both mother and child need special care from qualified health attendants," he said.
