Wow! Tori Spelling’s Jade and Gold Push Present

Better late than never!

When Tori Spelling gave birth to Finn Davey in August 2012, there wasn’t a whole lot of time for husband Dean McDermott to find the perfect push present. But you can’t really blame the guy. He and Spelling more than have their hands full with three other kids together Liam Aaron, 5½, Stella Doreen, 4½, and Hattie Margaret, 15 months.

Tori Spelling Stella Saved My Life
Inset:Gregg DeGuire/PictureGroup

“I got a call from Dean and he said he was really late but he wanted to get Tori a very special push present to celebrate the birth of baby Finn,” jeweler Neil Lane, who designed the couple’s wedding bands and most recently created an antique gold and coral ring for their sixth anniversary, tells PEOPLE exclusively.

“He wanted something pretty, but different. He really cares and said he’d been thinking about it for a long time.”

While Lane offered an array of options, including an Indian vintage ring and a rare amethyst, McDermott honed in on a jade and gold ring from the celebrity jeweler’s collection.

Acquired in China in the 1920s, the 10-carat cabochon-cut jade stone with a fancy gold filigree design has the original delicate Chinese hallmarks. “Tori loves green, she loves perfectly rounded stones like this one and the abstract floral style is just beautiful,” Lane explains.

McDermott surprised Spelling with it around the holidays and the gift was a hit. “Dean adores her and he looks at jewelry as a connection to the relationship [to mark] milestones in their life,” says Lane. “The ring was a token of his love, affection and appreciation of their love and this new baby. They’re really happy and romantic!”

Teen Art on Exhibit in Everett

For seven weeks this fall, nine teenage students spent their Tuesday afternoons learning the art of photography with Herald photographers Annie and Mark Mulligan at the Everett Public Library. These young photographers were part of Promising Artists in Recovery, a program created in 2011 through the Denney Juvenile Justice Center in Everett.

Every week students left class with 35 mm film cameras and set out to document everything from their daily lives, to friends and family, to themselves. Today their snapshots of life are on exhibit at the Schack Art Center in "Through My Lens: Life of Film."

The exhibit, which opens Jan. 10 and runs through Feb. 3, features three photographs from each of the nine students in the class. There is an opening reception with the artists on Thursday, Jan. 10, from 5 to 8 p.m.

The Schack Art Center is located at 2921 Hoyt Ave. in Everett. To learn more about this exhibit, visit www.schack.org/exhibits or call 425-259-5050.

Is Sugar Even Worse Than We Thought?

Blog

By Healthy Child Staff

Psst! Put down the holiday cookies for a minute. Do you have a general household policy on sugar? Are you the sort of family that swaps Halloween candy with your kids for safer or healthier treats? If your kids complain about how you approach the sweet stuff, they might be interested to know it could be stricter. A lot stricter. A growing number of researchers are starting to compile a body of evidence saying sugar and other sweeteners are actually toxic to the human body. So much so they should be government regulated like alcohol and cigarettes.

An article in the journal Nature by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) proposes taxing all food and drinks that contain added sugar. Perhaps they’re friends with New York City’s mayor, Michael Bloomberg, who banned the sale of large sugary drinks like soda. The UCSF researchers also suggest banning sales in or near schools and putting age limits on sugary items, according to an article on LiveScience.com

The reasoning behind their proposed bans? They say sugar increases blood pressure, cholesterol, liver failure risk, obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. It has hit a nerve. Dr. Robert Lustig, the UCSF specialist on pediatric hormone disorders and an expert in childhood obesity, has nearly 3 million hits on his sugar-related YouTube video.

The New York Times Magazine gave the same topic, including Dr. Lustig, a cover story entitled Is Sugar Toxic? in 2011. Not only does figuring out the answer to this question stand to help people who are obese or have diabetes or metabolic disorders, it could save substantial U.S. health care dollars spent on these diet-related illnesses. As the medical community works to get clearer answers to this great sugar debate, suddenly a mass market chocolate swapped for a Fair Trade one doesn’t seem like much of a hardship.

You can go back to your holiday cookies now.

Baby on the Way for Jensen Ackles

Supernatural's Jensen Ackles Expecting Baby
Mike Coppola/Getty

He’s hunted down demons, gone after ghosts and come face to face with ferocious monsters, but Jensen Ackles is diving into a whole new dimension: daddy duty.

The Supernatural star, 34, and his wife Danneel are expecting their first child later this year, his rep confirms to PEOPLE exclusively.

The actress, who most recently played Jenn on Retired at 35, will debut her baby bump when she accompanies Ackles — who plays Dean alongside new dad Jared Padalecki on the hit series — to the People’s Choice Awards Wednesday, where the dad-to-be is scheduled to present.

The couple tied the knot in 2010 in the actor’s hometown of Dallas, Texas.

Mighty mittens that stay put so kids stay warm

Mighty mittens that stay put so kids stay warm

So I'm happy to see that CMP-fave mimiTENS has now created a new line just for babies and littler kids.

MimiTENS stay on and the kids keep warm because these Canadian-made mittens have a long, stretchy cuff that goes over a child's arm, keeping their mittens right where you want them. We Canadians know a thing or two about keeping warm, after all.

While I love the bright colors and trendy embroidered designs of the original big-kid mimiTENS (seriously, do you see those unicorns up at top?), it's the tiny and sweet baby mittens that make my heart skip a beat. Made with supersoft bamboo and cotton, they're as practical as they are beautiful.
As far as other new styles, mimiTENS has just collaborated with Toronto street artist We Kill You to design some supercool glow-in-the-dark mittens that will knock your kids' socks off.  But don't worry. At least their mittens will stay right where you want them to. -Stephanie S.

Keep your kids' hands warm and their mittens on with mimiTENS this winter.

Talk to Your Baby in the Womb -- He Is Listening!

pregnant womanIf you're like most moms-to-be, then you've spent a fair amount of time with your head hunched over, talking to your baby in the womb as if he or she were already here. And chances are you've felt a little bit crazy or even embarrassed for doing it when someone catches you, right?

As it turns out, you're way ahead of the curve as far as getting a jump start on your newborn's learning, because a new study shows that babies hear and learn from their mother's voice in utero.

During the last 10 weeks of pregnancy, babies start absorbing language, and that's why they are able to tell the difference between their mother's spoken language and other foreign languages just hours after they are born.

The mother's voice gets amplified by her body, which is how the baby is able to hear her. Pretty cool, huh?

Although, there is some disappointing news. The author of the study, Patricia K. Kuhl, PhD, says that the baby cannot hear other voices, like dad's. (Aww.) She also adds, "Mothers shouldn't try putting earphones on their bellies and playing music because it's already noisy in there. Learning the mother's voice and her vowels happens naturally as the mothers speak."

When I was pregnant with my son, I never went so far as to put earphones around my belly, but I did play music occasionally, and I talked to him all the time. And when I say all the time, I mean ALL the time. I told him all about whatever I was doing during my day, how I couldn't wait to meet him, and I told him about various family members and friends I couldn't wait to introduce him to.

And as weird as it sounds, right after he was born and the doctor placed him in my arms, he looked at me with his eyes open wide almost as if to say, "Hey, lady. I know you."

I mean, I can't really say for sure whether or not he recognized me by the sound of my voice, but it's sure nice to think that we shared an early connection right from the start.

That being said -- talk to your babies, moms-to-be! And don't be the least bit fazed by people giving you strange looks or wondering who in the heck you are talking to. Your little one can hear you, and he/she is listening, and that's all that matters.

Have you been talking to your baby throughout your pregnancy?

14 Freaky Things That Happen During Pregnancy That Aren't Cause for Alarm

pregnancyAbout 30 seconds after you find out you're pregnant, you enter a crazy world called: IS THIS NORMAL? Your digestive system gets all techy, your body leaks goo, and everything smells unfamiliar. This was one of the big shocks of pregnancy for me. Usually if you feel bad, that means something is wrong. But with pregnancy, if you feel bad, it most likely means everything is just fine and dandy, puking lady!

The range of "normal" symptoms and experiences during pregnancy is almost as wide as your expanding ass. Belly! I mean belly. Here's just a sampling of things that happen during pregnancy that feel wrong but probably mean everything's great.

  1. EXTREME! Fatigue -- even after the first trimester. You're not dying. You're just pregnant.
  2. You feel like you have the flu, only without the fever, aches, and stuffy nose. Very common in the first trimester. Call your doctor if you do get a fever, though.
  3. What you once loved (food, your husband) now smells utterly revolting. It's pretty common to have a stronger and altered sense of smell during pregnancy. Your husband won't smell like that after you have the baby.
  4. You're spotting blood. I spotted a lot during my pregnancy and kept worrying that I was having a miscarriage -- but actually some spotting is typical. Call your doctor if the amount of blood increases dramatically, though.
  5. Sci-fi movie-style vaginal discharge. It may be slimy and yellow, or thick and white. There's so much of it! It's just leukorrhea, caused by hormonal changes. But if it smells off, definitely call your doctor.
  6. You're cramping like you're on your period. This is common in the first weeks of pregnancy. If the pain suddenly gets worse, call your doctor.
  7. Endless headaches. It's not a brain tumor. It's pregnancy.
  8. You sprout spots or skin tags. Many women get brown spots and skin tags around their body during pregnancy. The spots are called melasma, and sometimes it goes away after pregnancy. Sometimes.
  9. Your tailbone hurts like hell. Your joints are moving around during pregnancy -- they literally become more loose to accommodate your growing belly and all the shifts in weight. Which brings us to ...
  10. Sharp abdominal pains in the second and third trimester. This is your round ligament, which supports your belly. It's being stretched. Ouch. If those pains get severe, though, call your doctor.
  11. Your hands go numb. This can happen if you've suffered carpal tunnel before when your arms and fingers become swollen (you've noticed you can't remove your wedding ring anymore, right?).
  12. Tender, swollen gums. That happens, too. Normal. Most likely your teeth won't fall out.
  13. Your pee smells weird. This is partly because you're smelling things differently, but your pee may be different just because.
  14. Metallic taste in your mouth. That's caused by hormonal changes, not some bizarre form of iron overdose -- unless you've actually been overdosing on iron supplements.

OMG, pregnancy: The good times just keep rolling on! But don't worry, be happy, and when in doubt, talk with your doctor or midwife. Better safe than sorry, of course. Still, if you can save yourself from some unnecessary worry, you and your baby will both be better off.

Have you had any of these "troubling" symptoms?

Dr. Adorable to the OR, stat!

Move over, Future Diva. There's a new girl in town, and her future's so bright, she's got to wear a glittery pink stethoscope.

The Future Doctor onesie from Technigirl is an adorable way to let everyone know there's going to be a surgeon in the family in, oh, about 30 years and 8 million dollars of tuition (accounting for inflation). It's made in the USA of 100% cotton with phthalate-free inks, and while I don't think the stethoscope has to be pink or glittery, it will prevent some of those awkward "what a cute little boy" conversations in those early months.

Spotted: Reese Witherspoon Snaps a Family Shot

Life’s a beach for Reese Witherspoon, who spend New Year’s in the sand with her family.

The actress was spotted in Hawaii with husband Jim Toth, their newborn son Tennessee James, 3 months, and her elder children Deacon, 9, and Ava, 13.

Witherspoon, who recently said she was “crawling back” to her pre-baby body, topped her ruched navy one-piece with a cover-up for the day in the sun.

Lending a helping hand was big sister Ava, whom Witherspoon calls “so awesome” with the baby. The teen carried her little brother around the beach while Witherspoon, 36, snapped photos of the pair.

Furniture Flame Retardants: Burning Out At Last?

Blog

By Veena Singla and Arlene Blum, Green Science Policy Institute

On May 6, 2012 the Chicago Tribune headline read:

Playing with fire: A deceptive campaign by industry brought toxic flame retardants into our homes and into our bodies. And the chemicals don’t even work as promised.”

This investigation concluded that flame retardant chemicals in our furniture don’t help stop fires, but they do pose health risks. A typical home contains a pound of flame retardants associated with hormone disruption, lowered IQ, impaired fertility and/ or cancer. The good news is that this may change; in the meantime there are steps to protect your family.

Why are flame retardants in furniture and baby products?
Flame retardants are in the foam of furniture and baby products like strollers and nursing pillows to meet the 1976 California standard, Technical Bulletin 117 (TB117). Though TB117 is a California standard, we found that many US manufacturers follow it and add flame retardants to foam in our studies of baby products and couches

What is the latest on furniture flame retardants and health?
A recent study found a correlation between a pregnant woman’s level of the flame retardant pentaBDE and negative outcomes in her child at age 7. The pregnant moms with higher pentaBDE were more likely to have children with decreased IQ, fine motor coordination, and ability to focus attention.

Our study investigating couches found that 41% contained chlorinated Tris (or TDCPP), the cancer-causing chemical removed from baby pajamas in the 1970s. Chlorinated Tris is a carcinogen on California’s Proposition 65 and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that people are exposed to unsafe amounts from furniture.

Flame retardants continuously migrate out of foam into house dust. Pets and people, especially small children who put their hands into their mouths more often, then ingest this contaminated dust.

What can I do about flame retardants?

At Home
Because flame retardants hide out in house dust, to reduce the amount of flame retardants entering our kid's bodies we can clean the dust in our homes and on our hands.

Buying Products

  • Avoid products with polyurethane foam. Cotton, wool, down, and polyester usually do not contain flame retardants. Manufacturers like BabyLuxe, BabyBjorn, OrbitBaby and Boppy advertise that they do not use flame retardants.
  • Download the Safe Kids and the How to Buy Flame Retardant-Free Furniture handouts.

For future generations

Kenya: Narok Mum Gives Birth to Quadruplets

A woman from Narok is rejoicing after she gave birth to four kids at the Kijabe Mission Hospital on January 1. Thirty-five-year old Regina Nyambura said she was scanned months before the delivery and found to be pregnant with the quadruplets.

Speaking yesterday at her hospital bed when she was visited by Kiambu senator aspirant Terry Kairu, Nyambura said she has named the four Precious, Angel, Victoria and Joy.

"The names came from the Bible as I have conquered joyfully and it's a blessing from God to have four kids at one time. I and my family count it as a miracle from God," said Nyambura.

She said that she was hoping for a boy because she has two other girls, Brigate Wairimu, 14, and Abigail Wanjiku, 5. Her 38-year-old husband Lawrence Gitau said he is happy with the safe delivery of the quadruplets.

"We wanted a boy but God has given us four girls. We are grateful and we shall take care of them until they grow up," said Nyambura.

Doctors at the hospital are optimistic that the kids will survive despite their being born prematurely. Pediatrician Barasa Immaculate said the four were delivered in their seventh month.

"The children were not fully mature and weighed between 900gm -1kg. We have put them in the incubators for the next two months," she said. Peter Bird, the hospital's director said they mostly deliver triplets.

Meanwhile, the hospital communications officer Nelson Kimilu has lamented over bad state of the road leading to the hospital from the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

Cool thank you cards from kids (that they'll actually want to write)

Cool thank you cards from kids (that they'll actually want to write)

One of my resolutions this year is to be a little more diligent about getting kids to write thank-you cards. So the first thing I did was order some that they got to pick out themselves. They were so thrilled to see them arrive that they jumped at the chance to start scribbling sweet notes of thanks.

Here are the cards my girls picked out, along with some others that might strike a chord with your own kids; boys or girls, little ones to teens. The thing that matters most of course is that they love their thank-you notes. Trust me, it's the easiest way to get that pencil in their hands. -Liz

When I first saw these personalized kids' notecards at Olliegraphic I thought they were the cutest things ever. Kids will go crazy over cards that look just like them and will be eager to send them out. It's also nice that there are a lot of choices, from skin color to hair style to facial expression. Even add a name or a little bit of text you want. This shop is so wonderful with custom orders--it's always a joy to order from them.

If you want to save a little money, you can even have the design personalized by Olliegraphic, then order it as custom printable stationery which gives you five PDF files for folded cards, gift tags, a note pad, letter paper and an envelope. If you've got a great printer, full ink cartridges and nice paper, it's a great deal. (Just note the shop is taking a well-needed vacation after a busy holiday, but they'll be back soon!)

I am beyond in love with these LEGO thank you notes (I mean uh, non-branded "building block" thank you notes) from Etsy shop Blonde Girl. You can also have them personalized with your child's name. What an amazing note card for a kid who's just had a LEGO-themed party--or tends to get LEGO gifts. Or just really really likes LEGO. I think that's most kids.

As simple as they are, these word bubble custom thank you cards from Paper Culture were exactly what my kids picked out, even from a huge range of thank you cards for kids. (I have to be honest, I like them too!) They added their names at the bottom of these nicely printed, recycled paper cards, chose from several colors, and customized the back, which was so much fun for them. There's just enough space in that bubble for a brief sentence or two, which is really all it takes. And the service at Paper Culture is so amazing--they get back to you quickly, and they're wonderful about making a change from the original proof should you need it. As I learned, when my kindergartner suddenly wanted her xoxo on the back to say love instead.

If you've got a too-cool-to-write-thank-you-notes tween or teen, Etsy's Naavale has some wonderful options based on illustrations of...feet. I think this Converse Thank You Card kinda says it all. If he prefers Timberlands and baggies? They've got that too.

I'm one of those people who believes you should never own "from the desk of..." stationery until you're old enough to actually have a desk. Which you use. To write on your own stationery. The same goes for "a note from..." stationery--you need to actually write the note, kid! And when that day comes, Shutterfly has some nice affordable options like this personalized kids thank you card complete with your little star's photo. Just add lopsided handwriting. Perfection.

Minted has a ton of personalized kids' stationery, and because it comes so beautifully boxed up, it makes a nice gift on its own. Hey, then they have the thank-you notes built right in, right? I really like this vintage silhouette note card for a girl, customized with a name. Of course it does help if she actually looks a little like the silhouette.

I know if my daughters had this Hello Kitty stationery set the real problem would be keeping them from using it all at once. Fortunately there are 125 sheets in there, and while you can personalize it with a name, the thin paper keeps it from being too precious. It doesn't come with envelopes but it does come with that cool box that I sense will get some good use long after the paper is gone.

Stubby Pencil Studio is a longtime favorite of ours, making cute gift sets of color-your-own cards perfect for preschoolers and grade-schoolers. There are even now cards specifically that say thank you on the front in dotted lines--all ready for tracing from early writers. But kids of all ages really have a blast coloring them in, and your recipient will treasure the front just as much as what's inside.

I don't know what it is about tween girls but anything with sugar seems to be up their alleys. I think these donut note cards at I-Scream Shop are pretty cute, but should your kiddo be into cupcakes, gummy bears, or Willie Wonka-esque giant lollipops, you're in luck.

  • We can solve the problem of toxic flame retardants in furniture by changing the TB117 standard that leads to their use. In June, California Governor Jerry Brown took the lead in protecting our health by directing the state to revise TB117 for increased fire safety without toxic chemicals.

The 9 best recipes of 2012 from the 9 best food bloggers of 2012

Is it wrong to start with sweets? I dare you to look at that Snickerdoodle Cookie Sandwich with Hazelnut Cream (above) and tell me that it is. And here's the happy kicker: these amazing cookies from Silvana's Kitchen are gluten- and dairy-free. Crazy, right? Silvana has an insane talent for making gluten-free eating easy and delicious, and this cookie is no exception. Although you should be able to substitute regular flour and butter with no problem, if you'd like.

Choosing one favorite recipe that you've developed from an entire year is very difficult. (Even more difficult is to keep from posting about the recipe over and over. (Seriously, guys, make this. I'm not joking. This is the 15th time I've made this in one week.) I was struggling to choose between three recipes when my hungry boys chimed in. It was unanimous: Indian Spiced Meatballs which it turns out is a favorite of mine too. Meatballs get all the glory and for good reason, I suppose. They are easy, delicious and good for the whole family, even wee little ones.

Kate Middleton's Last Birthday Before Baby Is Bittersweet

Kate MiddletonThe countdown is on until Kate Middleton's royal birthday on January 9. The pregnant princess will be 31, and according to royal insiders there are big plans in the works to make it a special day for her highness.

Sources say Prince William is out to spoil his bride. The purchase of a country home is a possibility as is some sort of surprise involving family. I hope whatever it is, it's a day that's all about Kate. Because with a baby on the way, it's frankly the last birthday she'll ever have that will be.

As they say, motherhood changes everything; and birthdays are definitely included. Because a day that's supposed to be all about you simply can't be anymore because "you" now includes your children.

Instead of coconut cream cake that you love, you choose chocolate cake because the children don't like coconut. You'll never blow out your candles alone again once they're old enough to blow; and of course, that likely means you'll go years without a saliva-free piece of cake. Even when you make your wishes, you'll find they aren't for you, but them.

Sure there may be adult parties and a weekend getaway some years when you're away from them, but it's still not all about you, as you worry and call and wonder about the little beings at home you miss so much. You savor details to share with them, and you refrain from that third glass of champagne because you know they'll need you the next day.

And that's okay -- great even.  I wouldn't trade motherhood for all the coconut cream frosting in the world, but it doesn't mean I don't miss it. It doesn't mean I don't have some small pangs of longing for the days when my birthday was all about me. When I got to blow out my own candles and make my own wishes. When I didn't have to share my last perfect bite with a toddler who had already eaten hers.

So live it up, Kate. Enjoy this birthday, because you'll never have another one like it again. They'll probably be sweeter in the future, but they'll never be the same.

Do you miss having birthdays that were all about you since having children?

Tanzania: Still Baby Twin Without Face, Sister Die in Rukwa

Sumbawanga — A 29 year-old mother's joy of delivering twins in Sumbawanga Municipality, Rukwa region was cut short after it was established that the male child was stillborn and without a face.

The woman (name withheld) gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, prematurely at Dr Atman Hospital around 2:00pm on January 01, this year. However, the male child had several physical deformities and was stillborn while the female baby died shortly after birth.

"The male child was born without a face and other physical deformities. That is it did not have eyes, a nose and a mouth. It also did not have a neck and its umbilical cord was missing at birth," Sumbawanga Municipality's Doctor-in-Charge, Dr Ally Makori Mussa said.

According to Dr Mussa, the female twin was normal at birth with its body parts intact. The mother is said to be in stable condition after undergoing thorough check-up at the hospital. She, however, confessed to the doctors attending her that she had never attended any clinics, never received medical treatment or counselling from a hospital during the nine months of her pregnancy.

According to Dr Mussa, the mother admitted to have used traditional medication wherever she was experiencing severe stomach pains during the early stages of her pregnancy. Meanwhile, a total of 12 children were born on New Year at Rukwa Regional Hospital and Dr Atman hospital in Sumbawanga town.

A survey conducted by the 'Daily News' established that five, all female, were born at Rukwa Regional Hospital. At Dr Atman Hospital at Christ the King area, seven children were born and among them four were girls and three were boys.
