Ghost stories. Ooooooooo!

Ghost stories. Ooooooooo!

The Girls' Ghost Hunting Guide by Stacey GrahamMy tween is finally beyond the check-under-the-bed-for-monsters stage, and is now onto reading scary stories "for fun." So once she hangs up her Halloween trick-or-treat bag for the night, I know she'll enjoy digging into this smart and spooky guide that deals with all of those things that go bump in the night.

The Girls' Ghost Hunting Guide may look sweet and light---that ghost has eyelashes!---but don't let the cover fool you. The content in this little guide is packed with loads of information for those interested in the paranormal. And some of it is spooky enough that I had to turn on a few extra lights in the house while reading.

In fact, I know my son would love the contents inside just as much as his sister, but I'm pretty certain the bright-pink-scalloped edging on the cover (and the eyelashed ghost) will scare him away.

Beginning with ghost history and covering everything from haunted objects to how to become an investigator, this is a fun little book to read bit-by-bit until every creak in the house starts to sound ominous. Although don't fear: Some of the stories about real-life ghost hunters, strange apparitions, and even party games--like that perennial favorite Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board--are just plain fun and not too spooky. Besides, the book has such playful page graphics, colors, and even lettering which all work together to keep things from seeming too scary.

After all, we do want our girls to go to sleep at some point, right?  -Christina

A Parent’s Review: 3 Pigs at StoryBook Theater

Put together some silly puns, catchy songs, ingenious costumes and liberties with the plot and you have StoryBook Theater’s version of the classic tale of The Three Little Pigs.

In 3 Pigs, the pigs are all ladies – Sweet Pea, Calla Lilly and Petunia Blossom. “You can tell which one is the smart one because she wears glasses,” my friend Logan astutely pointed out. The hungry one is only interested in food, and the one wearing big purple beads is interested in curling her tail and staying beautiful. She’s the “Pig of the Litter.”

Once they figure out that the humans are fattening them up to eat them, the girls hit the road, head to the City Dump and take over the resident wolf’s house as their own. They reinforce it first with giant drinking straws (because beauty pig doesn’t listen and picks up straws instead of straw) and then with stickers (hungry pig isn’t listening when smart pig says to gather sticks) and then with bricks. The endearingly slinky and not-too-bright wolf tries to get his house back and find something to eat by the usual huffing and puffing.

In the question-and-answer period at the end of the show, some of the kids were wondering why the wolf was trying to blow down the house. Hint to parents: Go over the classic story right before going to the show so that the adaptation makes sense and the kids get the jokes.

Logan, who has just turned 8, thought the show was a bit babyish for him. He’s right: This is best for kids ages 3 to 6, the predominant ones in the audience. Logan found the opening numbers – three songs in a row from the lady pigs – boring, but he was much more engaged once the wolf came out. Children in the audience laughed at his antics, and especially liked the parts where he chased the pigs up and down the theater aisles. Three volunteer children were invited on stage to help construct the wall of bricks on the house.

StoryBook Theater uses a giant foam board “book” as the backdrop to its plays; the actors flip the pages to change the scenes. It’s a nice device, tying the plot to literature. Costumes are always a strong part of the theater group’s productions. In the question-and-answer time, Logan asked what made the pink pig costumes so lumpy and bumpy. (I won’t tell you; try to guess.) The wolf’s costume was a wonderful conglomeration of patchwork fabric, fur and plastic. Kids can meet the characters and touch the costumes after the performances.

StoryBook Theater is a labor of love, headed by Lani Brockman, who directed this show, and Susan Bardsley, who created the music, played the keyboard and talked with the audience. Their love for children and their desire to introduce them to the joys of live theater shine through in this production.

Rub Elbows with Local Scientists

Rub elbows with local scientists while examining bacteria under a UV light or practicing using a pipette while extracting blood from a real heart during the sixth annual Life Sciences Research Weekend, running Friday, Nov. 2. through Sunday, Nov. 4 at Pacific Science Center.

The Northwest Association for Biomedical Research and Pacific Science Center have teamed up once again for three days of demonstrations, interactive exhibits and talks for school children, families and citizen scientists interested in learning more about the exciting world of life sciences and the key role research plays in our daily lives. With the help of over 23 scientists and dozens of researchers and volunteers, guests can bisect a real sheep heart to learn about heart health, extract DNA from a squishy strawberry to discover what these strands of life look like, and even become a lab scientist by making hand sanitizer to keep bacteria in check.

Amgen, Benaroya Research Institute, The Hope Heart Institute, University of Washington, Shoreline Community College and Bates Technical College are among the many local cutting-edge institutions that will demonstrate some of the current research underway in our region. Life Sciences Research Weekend is a program of Pacific Science Center’s Portal to the Public Initiative, which brings scientists and public audiences together in face-to-face interactions to promote an appreciation and understanding of current science research taking place in the community.

The activities are included free with the price of general admission. To learn more about the weekend, visit Pacific Science Center's website.

Get the full Ginger-Cranberry Pork Roast Recipe, Healthy Mama BBQ Chicken, and Orange Beef Stew recipes after the jump…

Ginger-Cranberry Pork Roast

2 pork roasts
2, 12 ounce package fresh cranberries or 2 cans of whole cranberries
1 cup peeled and sliced or minced ginger
2 tablespoons rapadura sugar
2 tablespoons of quick cooking tapioca or some other thickening agent.
1 cup filtered water

Dump all ingredients (except water) into two, one gallon bags. Label and put in freezer.
Day of cooking dump contents of bag into slow cooker, add the water, and cook on low for 4 to 6 hours, or until fully cooked. Remember each slow cooker is different, so the first time you make a recipe, really watch it so you don’t over or under cook it.
Serve with sauteed broccoli in lots of butter. I cook frozen broccoli this way, no need to thaw, just dump frozen broccoli into a hot pan with hot butter and it is delicious.
Enjoy!

Healthy Mama BBQ Chicken

3 medium unpeeled sweet potatoes, cut into 1/2 inch pieces, about 2 cups
2 large green pepper, cut into strips or cubes, about 2 cups
1 large red pepper, cut into strips or cubes, about 1 cup
2 zucchini, chopped, about 2 cups
2 cups chopped onion
2 tablespoon quick cooking tapioca (or flour, or some other thickening agent)
2 pounds chicken thighs or drumsticks
2 15oz cans of tomato sauce
4 tablespoons packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoon ground yellow mustard
2 clove garlic, finely minced, about 2 tablespoons
1 teaspoon salt

Divide everything into two separate one gallon freezer bags, shake it up, seal, label and put in the freezer. On the day of cooking, dump it into your slow cooker and cook on high for 4 to 6 hours, or low 6-8 hours, depending on your specific slow cooker.

Orange Beef Stew

3 to 4 pounds of chuck roast (or any other kind of roast)
2 cups of beef broth (I use homemade stock)
2 cups of orange juice (fresh juice is best, but I was running short on time and just used Uncle Matt’s Organic)
1 tablespoon of rapadura sugar
2 tablespoons of soy sauce
2 tablespoons of arrow root powder/flour
2 tablespoons of minced garlic (fresh is best, but not having to cut up garlic is so nice!)
1 bunch of scallions
2 sweet potatoes, cut into 1 inch cubes. ( I scrub them good, but leave the skins on)
Salt and Pepper to taste

Directions: Label 1 one-gallon freezer bag. Chop sweet potatoes and scallions, then add to freezer bag. Add in sugar, arrow root flour, soy sauce, garlic and orange juice. Mix up well and then lay bag flat and place in freezer. Day of cooking: add contents of freezer bag, roast, 2 cups of beef broth, salt and pepper to slow cooker. Cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours. Serve with fresh salad and homemade sourdough bread, if you have it.

Jazz4Kids Concert Turns Performance Hall Into Classroom

Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra will celebrate the opening of its 18th season with another of its popular Jazz4Kids concerts on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 4 p.m. in the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall. This one-hour matinee is presented with special support from The Glaser Foundation and Seattle's Child magazine.

Jazz4Kids concerts are presented at a nominal $1 ticket charge. With the goal of turning a professional concert hall into a classroom, this event features instrument demonstrations, questions from kids in the audience, and a hands-on "instrument petting zoo" in the lobby (courtesy of Kennelly Keys Music) where kids can come and try out a band instrument. The music performed will be selections from the "New Orleans Night Out" concert that evening (note: Branford Marsalis will not appear in the Jazz4Kids concert).

Purchasing tickets ahead of time is highly recommended. Tickets can be printed at home by visiting the Jazz4Kids ticket order page at srjo.org/jazz4kids.htm

The Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra is the Northwest's premier big band jazz ensemble. Founded in 1995, the 17-piece big band is made up of the most prominent jazz soloists and band leaders in the greater Seattle area.

5 Tips for Eating Safer Seafood

Blog

By Margie Kelly, Communications Manager

Raise your hand if you have a hard time figuring out which fish and seafood are safe to eat.

I really want to give my family all the good things about fish (omega-3’s, protein!) without any of the bad (mercury, PCBs, antibiotics – yuck).  To eat fish that’s good for you and isn’t fished in a manner that’s destroying the oceans, you have to be an informed and conscious consumer.

Don’t give up on fish and seafood just because it’s complicated to know what to buy. Follow these tips to get the safest seafood for your family.

1. Know where your seafood comes from
Get to know the person who sells you fish by asking her or him questions about where the fish is imported from, who caught the fish, and how far it traveled to get to the store or restaurant. Since there are no standards in place or labels to help you make decisions about fish, you need to engage with the waiter or fishmonger to get answers to your questions.

2. Buy fish lowest in contaminants
Think about eating species that are small in size, low in fat, and aren’t bottom dwellers: sardines, herring, mackerel, anchovies, and clams.

There is no safe level of mercury to ingest so it’s important to avoid fish with high mercury levels like Ahi Tuna, swordfish, Orange Roughy, and shark.  (See NRDC’s Mercury in Fish walletcard for information about fish with high and low mercury levels.)

Dioxins and PCBs are also a concern when eating fish. Pregnant women will especially want to avoid those chemicals. Take a look at the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Super Green List or get the Safe Seafood app for your iPhone to help you choose fish.

3. Choose wild fish whenever possible
Wild fish have a higher level of omega-3s, a lower percentage of fat, and no antibiotics. Wild fish may even have lower levels of chemical contamination, depending on the body of water where it originated. Some studies have found farmed fish have higher levels of PCBs than wild fish. Again, ask questions of your fishmonger to learn more about the fish you want to eat (see point 1).

4. Just say no to shrimp
Shrimp is the most popular seafood in America, but it’s really filthy stuff. Imported shrimp, “more than any other seafood, has been found to be contaminated with banned chemicals, pesticides, and even cockroaches,” according to a terrifying story in Rodale.com.

So much for shrimp cocktail, that ultimate fancy dinner indulgence! Of course, if you’re looking for a dose of antibiotics with your appetizer, go right ahead and eat the shrimp! Otherwise, find out where that shrimp came from and unless it’s wild, think twice about eating it.

5. Reduce consumption of PCBs, dioxins and some pesticides through cooking methods that reduce fat:

  • Trim fat, skin, and any darker meat along the top or center of the fillet.
  • Remove the mustard from crabs and the tomalley from lobsters.
  • Broil, grill, bake or steam to cook the seafood. Use a pan that allows fat to drip away from the fish, such as a broiling pan or steaming basket. Avoid frying fish.
  • Avoid sauces made from liquid fish drippings or cooking water.
  • Avoid dishes that call for whole fish with internal organs intact.

How do you decide which fish & seafood to feed your family?

Moms Take on Food Dyes in Kellogg’s Fruit Snacks

Blog

By Margie Kelly, Communications Manager

Erica Reid and Latham Thomas are friends who share a passion for healthy living and nurturing children.  Now they share one more thing: a public petition to Kellogg’s asking the food giant to take food dyes out of its fruit snacks.

Will you please sign and share Erica and Latham’s petition to John A. Bryant, President & CEO of the Kellogg Company asking Kellogg’s to remove artificial food dyes from children fruit snacks?

Moms have made the mistake of giving kids fruit snacks thinking that it contained fruit and that it was a healthier option than candy. But it’s not true that fruit snacks are healthier. Artificial food dyes have been linked to allergies and hyperactivity in some children. The combination of artificial food dyes and sugar make Kellogg’s Fruit Flavored Snacks a double threat to our kids health.

“I was absolutely one of those moms who gave both of my children fruit snacks thinking it was better than candy,” said Erica, who is also author of The Thriving Child. “At the time, I wasn’t aware of the potential harm from food dyes and didn’t think twice because the word ‘fruit’ was attached. Now, I know better.”

Artificial food dyes  which are found in everything from candy and sodas to baked goods, salad dressings, frozen desserts, have been linked to allergy-like effects and hyperactivity in some kids; cancer is also a concern. For example, Kellogg’s Toy Story Fruit Flavored Snacks contain the artificial food dyes Yellow 5, Red 40, and Blue 1. These colors have been shown to cause allergy-like effects. Additionally, Yellow 5 and Red 40 may be contaminated with cancer-causing agents, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

"Artificial food dyes have been linked to hyperactivity, allergies and cancer, yet they are found everywhere from beverages to snack foods. For optimal health, parents would be well-advised to limit the amount of food dyes their children consume," said Alan Greene, M.D., a noted pediatrician, author of Raising Baby Green and founder of DrGreene.com.

Latham, a holistic lifestyle expert and Founder of MamaGlow.com says, “Our children are consuming packaged foods and even with proper guidance, it's hard for them to avoid the synthetic dyes, specifically in foods marketed to them. We are asking Kellogg’s to remove artificial food dyes from their fruit flavored snacks because not only do these products contain food dyes, but all the kids’ favorite cartoon characters and superheroes are on the box, making it that much harder to say no.”

Consider these facts about food dyes:

  • About 15 million pounds of petroleum-based dyes are used in food each year. Since 1955, there has been a five-fold increase in food dye consumption.
  • Food dyes have been linked to hyperactivity, aggression, asthma, irritability and poor sleep in children, according to a report by the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy.
  • Red 3 is a known carcinogen that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned from cosmetics and medicines in 1990, but it’s still used in foods.

Kellogg’s already makes artificial dye-free fruit snacks for children in Britain, but that dye-free option is not available in the United States. Why?  British officials were so concerned by the scientific studies linking artificial food dyes to behavioral issues in children that they required manufacturers to place a warning label on foods made with food dyes. The label reads, "May have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children."

The threat of the warning label forced many manufacturers to pull artificial dyes from products, and instead use natural colors. But those companies, including Kellogg’s, Mars (maker of M&Ms, Skittles, and other candies), and Kraft, still use artificial dyes in foods sold to kids in the United States.

We believe Kellogg’s can do better. As Erica and Latham wrote to Kellogg’s CEO & President John A. Bryant, “We don’t want to live in a world without colors. Or snacks. But let’s do it naturally.” Healthy Child Healthy World couldn’t agree more.

Please share the petition to Kellogg’s with your friends, family, and community. Working together, we can get Kellogg’s to remove the artificial food dyes from children’s fruit snacks.

For more information, check out our tips on how to get food dyes out of your child’s diet. Also, check out our press release to read our official stance on the petition.

Zimbabwe: Model Aborts, Burns Foetus With Lover

A SUPER model who reportedly connived with her boyfriend to terminate her pregnancy before burning the foetus in a rubbish bin, has appeared in court. Gamuchirai Maziva (25) - who was crowned Miss February Face of Zimbabwe this year - reportedly terminated the pregnancy with the assistance of her boyfriend Nyasha Maridadi (23).

The couple, both from Cranborne, Harare, allegedly burnt the foetus, which they later dumped at the Zimphos complex in Msasa.

They were not formally charged with unlawful termination of pregnancy when they appeared before Harare magistrate Mrs Olivia Mariga.

Ms Mariga remanded the duo to November 11 on US$100 bail each.

As part of their bail conditions, they were ordered to reside at their given address and report to the police.

Mrs Mariga also ordered the investigating officer to take Maziva to a medical doctor to ascertain whether she gave birth or not.

They are also facing a charge of contravening section 8 of the Burial and Cremation Act, which prohibits "Dumping of Bodies and Hindering of Burial'.

Prosecutor Mr Tungamirai Chakurira alleges that on September 15, Maziva connived with Maridadi to terminate her pregnancy.

After the abortion, the pair placed the foetus in a metal bin, which they carried to a bush within Zimphos complex where they dumped it, the court heard.

They allegedly set the bin's contents on fire and went away.

Witnesses who allegedly saw Maziva and Maridadi taking the bin to the bush went to the scene where they discovered a foetus among the burning rubbish.

A report was filed and investigations led to the pair's arrest.

Friday I’m in Love (and So Lonely)

jaime morrison curtis
Last Friday, Jacinda was here. Look how happy I was! This Friday is so gray and dreary in comparison. We can’t wait to show you the ten million crafts we worked on. So. Fun.

But at least I can read this amazing interview she did with Texas M.I.L.K. (Texas Moms I’d Like to Know), before giving her much-tweeted speech on building your blog business at the Texas Conference for Women on Tuesday. I know there was a crowd of hundreds – were any of you there? Jealous!

And at least I have Princess Cheese to keep me company. Our sweet little shelter mutt is now 7 weeks in our home, fully healed from pneumonia, mange, kennel cough, and spaying. Now that’s she’s feeling better… well, let’s say her energy level has gone way up. She’s not the mellow angel we had grown used to, so tomorrow it’s off to training class we go. Wish us luck.

Oh, and my (eek!) new car (smells…so…good…for like five more minutes until it’s littered with cheeze-it crumbles, karate belts, and 2,431 scribbled montessori inset sheets). But this car has a “special table” in it, which is all Scarlet ever needed to make her happy (and which I have decided is a privilege to use only available to those who don’t litter my car). Well, that table and her new ladybug girl given to her by our buddy Eva from Skate Mamas.

And my daughter. The prudent dad has been away all week so we’ve been having snuggle parties and the like. My future litigator presented me with a proposal upon her father’s departure: “If you stay in your bed alone and I stay in my bed alone, we will both feel lonely. But I could stay in your bed with you, and then we will be happy together.” Who could argue with that?

And then my brain turned to jello and my heart dripped right onto the floor. Now I’m just a puddle.

Obsessed with taking pics of your kid? On Instagram? @misskubelik is the winner of last week’s #sleepyhead contest. Look at that little newbie! Welcome to the world Harper Sheridan!

This week we’re all about Halloween up in here, so show us your costume pics! Tag photos with #cutestcostume and #thisweekonprudentbaby. We will pick a favorite and post it here next week. We are loving all of your sweet baby photos. If you havent seen them, visit #thisweekonprudentbaby on instagram and follow@prudentjacinda and @prudentjaime to join the party.

A Vaginal Birth Means Your Baby Isn't the Only One Who'll Need Diapers

pregnant at the doctorThis probably won't come as a huge shock to most moms, but surprise, surprise -- a new study has found that having a vaginal birth can lead to weaker pelvic muscles down the road. And guess what? The research also found that moms who had their babies via c-section tended to have stronger pelvic muscles than the vaginal birth gals.

And while scientists can't say for sure whether having weaker pelvic floor muscles will actually cause women to have incontinence or other pelvic disorders, the possibility of the weak muscles playing a factor probably does exist. Translation: If you give birth vaginally versus having a c-section, there's a higher likelihood of you unintentionally peeing your pants at some point after your baby's arrival.

And as the mom of a 6-year-old who has accidentally peed her pants (a little bit) on more than one occasion since he entered this world, I can tell you that it's really not as embarrassing as it sounds, and it's actually pretty hilarious.

Heck, I'm not even ashamed to admit that I did it in the middle of Times Square -- twice. One minute I was walking across the street with my husband and son, and the next minute, I sneezed, and found myself laughing uncontrollably at the trickle that was starting to run down my leg. I managed to run inside our hotel and use the bathroom, and then an hour later, the same thing happened again. To this day, I don't think I'll ever be able to live down pissing myself in Times Square -- but it sure does make for a great story to share with my mom friends.

Peeing yourself as a mom is almost like a rite of passage or some sort of secret club that only we are privy to, and if nothing else, it gives us one more thing to laugh about and make the day a little bit lighter. (C'mon, even Billy Madison admits peeing your pants is cool.)

But if you are at all worried about whether you're going to do it and are considering a c-section in lieu of a vaginal birth simply because you're concerned about your muscles "down there", you might as well go ahead and accept the fact that you probably will wet yourself at some point -- and it's ok. It's not anything that's worth getting all worked up over -- and it's absolutely not worth opting for a scheduled surgical delivery simply because you're worried about ruining your favorite pair of underwear.

Does having weakened pelvic muscles concern you at all?

Count us in: BabyLit scores with a spooky number book

Little Master Stoker's Dracula board book | BabyLit

Little Master Stoker's Dracula is a very different counting count, spookier than the snuggly number-maestro of Sesame Street, and perfect for Halloween. Just a little bit dark (think semisweet chocolate), and just as modern and pretty as the other books in the BabyLit family, Dracula uses imagery from Bram Stoker's original Dracula tale to teach counting from one to ten.

The illustrations are atmospheric and lovely, merging moody colors with sweetly smiling characters and wolves too adorable to scare anybody. Two friends and five heroes await eager counters--amid a setting of six tombstones and nine boxes (actually the most darling coffins ever, but hush).
