Maputo — The Maputo City Health Directorate plans to reduce the maternal mortality ratio to 30 deaths per 100,000 births by the end of 2015.
Maputo city has one of the lowest rates in Mozambique. Last year the city's health units reported 49 maternal deaths, which is a ratio of 109 deaths per 100,000 births.
To lower the current indicators the City Health Directorate on Wednesday launched the Maternal, Perinatal and Neonatal Mortality Audit Committee.
The Audit Committee includes among its members officials from the health sector, doctors and nurses, who will work to improve the management of obstetric and neonatal complications.
The Audit Committee will also look at the causes of each maternal, perinatal and neonatal death. It will also be tasked with improving the identification and registration of maternal, perinatal and neonatal deaths, as well as calculating and monitoring the ratios.
The head of the Health Directorate, Pascoa Wate, told AIM that this body will work to bring down the maternal mortality rate to 30 deaths for 100,000 births.
The targets of the fourth and fifth Millennium Development Goals call for a two-thirds reduction in the under-five mortality rate and a three-quarters reduction in the maternal mortality rate between 1990 and 2015.
Wate added that the city aims to beat this target because Maputo has the advantage of providing quick access to health facilities due to its relatively small geographical area.
She explained that in the urban areas people have access to health units within a maximum of two hours, some of which have surgical facilities.
This contrasts with rural areas, where sometimes people have to travel up to 300 kilometres to reach a health unit with surgical facilities.
In attendance at the launch of the Audit Committee was the Governor of Maputo, Lucilia Hama, who urged members of the Committee to apply their skills to achieve the desired results.
