Nigeria: Maternal Mortality - FG Earmarks U.S.$11.5 Million for Family Planning

Even as the controversy over family planning rages on, the Federal Government has approved the sum of $11.5 million for the procurement of family planning commodities in Nigeria.

The funds which would be for the purchase of condoms, implant and other necessities were in fulfilment of government's determination to reduce maternal mortality in the country.

The Director of Family Health in the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Bridget Okoeguale, stated this Thursday in Abuja, at the 47th National Council Meeting (NCM) of the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria

She said: "The Federal Government along with the global partners is also committed to reducing maternal mortality rate in the country. You know our maternal mortality rate has not been very good.

"Last year in order to reduce maternal mortality rate, the Federal Government proclaimed that reproductive health commodities and family planning commodities like condoms and implant to be free. Now that it is free, people will have to be rushing it.

"So the government along with the partners made a forecast as to what we need in the country and contributed $3 million in 2011 through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which we implemented. But this year, globally, on July 11 to be precise, in London, there was a family planning summit organised by DFID and other partners to increase the commitment of governments all over the world to family planning.

"Nigeria came in a big way and Mr. President, through the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Muhammad Ali Pate, announced the Federal Government's commitment to the world with an additional $8.3 million reproductive health commodities which of course."

Okoeguale added that although maternal mortality in Nigeria has reduced, "we can't tell of the reduction rate not until we do the National Demographic Health Survey next year."

She further stated that: "For now, our maternal mortality rate is 545 per 100,000 live births and you will agree with me that it is very high and nothing to be proud of. We have been joining our very good development partners, namely: UNFPA, DFID, USIS, USAID and some other partners.

"We are appealing to states to key in because health is on the concurrent list. The Federal Government has a plan and policy but we cannot force states to key in. We can only advocate for them; they make requests to us as regards what they need but it is for them to ensure that these commodities reach the grassroots.

"For now, the partners are also supporting us with transport and other logistics especially getting the commodities to the rural and riverine areas. But for how long? That is why we are appealing to the states that they should have a budget line for planning.

"From the records we have, some states do not have budget line for family planning because of other priorities. I don't have the statistics but I do know that some states have not been able to create a budget line for family planning and we are calling on them to do so in earnest.

"This year, we will be having a conference on maternal new born and health commodities. We will also use the forum to appeal to states to use the forum appeal to states to create a budget line."

Also speaking, the outgoing President of PPFN, Mrs. Lami Buba, identified how to stem the rate of staff attrition and galvanize staff moral as one of the challenges of the federation.

Buba maintained that the federation will adopt a model that will assist the federation in keeping to its mandate as well as contribute its quota in improving better healthcare in the country.

Noa's Birth Story

Ocho Hands On

Today, my baby is four. Our family tradition is to tell you your birth story before your birthday, so I started whispering things to her for the past 44+ hours. One of the benefits of a long labor is time to think. Most women really panic at the thought of a long labor, but honestly, I preferred it. I went to the grocery, I went to the mall, I rented a breast pump... I even went to a birthday party for a friend's 5 year old. (When I lost my mucus plug, I went home!)

So come read about Noa's birth and celebrate with us!

Exciting Transformation at Pacific Science Center: Crews Break Ground on Wellbody Exhibit

It’s the final stretch. Years of big dreaming, planning, community collaboration and thoughtful and meticulous designing have come down to this: Crews have broken ground on Pacific Science Center’s first new permanent exhibition in more than a decade, Professor Wellbody's Academy of Health & Wellness.

Opening Dec. 1, this ambitious 7,000 square foot exhibit demonstrates how personal choices can positively affect our health and well-being with the incorporation of new media, hands-on inventions, gadgets activities and experiences that will present health as a life-long process of balancing exercise, diet, proper rest and hygiene.

The development of the exhibit’s concept and content is the result of several years of extensive research, planning, and imagination, including significant volunteer input from community leaders and nationally-recognized experts in health care.

Early on, Pacific Science Center assembled an advisory panel of health care experts from across the region including representatives from the University of Washington, Seattle Children’s Research Institute, Group Health Cooperative, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, and the Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians and Public Health - Seattle & King County.

For project phases and weekly updates, visit www.pacificsciencecenter.org/wellbodyacademy.

Joy Williams Introduces Son Miles Alexander

Joy Williams gave birth during a scorching heat wave in Nashville, but says her delivery was a breeze.

“I did it all naturally and really loved the experience. My husband [Nate Yetton] and I had just gone to the Belcourt to see the new Wes Anderson movie, and the air conditioning was out in the theater,” the female half of The Civil Wars tells PEOPLE. “I was so hot! I started feeling tiny pressure waves during the film, but they abated over time.”

Fast forward hours later and she was ready to give birth.

“The [contractions] woke me up at about 1:30 in the morning. And then those really gradual pressure waves grew to ‘Okay, I think it’s time to call the doula!’ It happened pretty quickly and it went really well,” Williams, 29, says. “I had a midwife and a doula. Nate was a champion of champions and so supportive and present.”

Open to several delivery options, Williams admits the birthing process proved to be a natural progression.

“I didn’t really feel the need for [an epidural]. It was pretty quick labor, so I didn’t have to endure days in and days out and that never-ending sense of, ‘When am I having this child?’” she explains. “Regardless of how you end up delivering — medication or not — the experience is beautiful and visceral and challenging, but ultimately really empowering.”

Despite the blissful birth, the first-time mama was more than ready to head home from the hospital with the couple’s newest addition.

“Some people told us that that drive home can feel really overwhelming and daunting, [but] I was ready to take him home to our safe environment and hibernate together,” Williams says. “When we walked in the door, it was like, ‘Okay, we’re here … and here’s your nursery and here’s the kitchen and here’s the living room — a getting-to-know-you session.”

After a “drama-free” pregnancy and delivery, Williams quickly settled into motherhood and has already introduced 9-week-old Miles Alexander to the family.

“His first time flying went really well! We’re in Northern California and the grandparents are meeting the little one,” she shares. “There’s nothing sweeter than being able to introduce him to them.”

And the name Miles suits the burgeoning jet-setter.

“I believe Miles means merciful in Latin and soldier in German, but the actual practical and literal meaning of miles leapt out to us as well,” the two-time Grammy winner explains. “The fact that we will be traveling around the world and he’ll see 10 different countries before he’s even six months old made that name even more special to us.”

As for her favorite way to spend time with her “really smiley” baby boy?

“I love walking to coffee shops. There are lots of great parks in Nashville. There’s a farmer’s market,” she says. “He’s so brand-new! There’s a lot more I want to do and show him around town.”

For now, the new mom is catching up on some shuteye — and feeling inspired by the late-night feedings. “I’m starting to write my own songs for him. Something to do in the middle of the night,” jokes Williams.

Pregnant Reese Witherspoon Reportedly Rushed to Hospital Twice in Two Days

Reese WitherspoonAccording to a new report from Radar Online, Reese Witherspoon was rushed to the hospital after having some sort of complication with her pregnancy. Supposedly she initially went into the hospital on Tuesday night and wound up being released, but headed back to the hospital yesterday.

As of last night, one source claimed that Reese is still there, and doctors fear there's a possibility of her going into early labor, which they're trying to prevent.

Reese will reportedly remain in the hospital for at least a few more nights in the hopes that preterm labor can be stopped.

And apparently Reese is handling the situation a little bit better than her husband, Jim Toth. The same source said:

"Jim is really worried about the baby. He's a first-time father so this is all really new to him and he just wants everything to be okay. He's a bundle of nerves. Meanwhile, this will be Reese's third child, so she's been through this before and she's trying to keep him calm."

If this report is true, Reese's calm demeanor really isn't a huge surprise. She's a level-headed gal, and I highly doubt she'd put any added stress on her body or her baby during a critical time like this. And another reason she's probably not too shaken is because she's due in early September. If her baby does wind up being born early, he/she will be fairly close to full-term, so the risks of additional complications aren't as bad as they'd be if this had happened earlier in her pregnancy.

Hopefully everything will be ok, and it will still be a couple more weeks before we hear an official baby announcement from Reese and Jim. The birth of their first child together is such an exciting moment, and they absolutely deserve for things to go smoothly and easily just like any new parents.

What well wishes would you send to Reese and Jim?

Labor and Delivery Hospital Bag Packing List

Blog

by Betsy Escandon, Founder of Eco-Novice

So you're having a baby. What should you pack in that bag you are taking with you to the hospital? I've had a lot of time to think about what to pack in my hospital bag for labor and delivery. All three of my children have been overdue. My first two babies came two weeks over due and were induced, so those deliveries were basically scheduled and I had much more time than I ever wanted to think about what to put in the bag. Here are some things to consider taking if you will soon be finding yourself in a labor and delivery room.

Towel. Put this on the very top of your bag and sit on it on the way to the hospital. Just in case.

Birth Plan. This was not super critical for me as I used midwives (and a doula) in a very mother-friendly hospital, and their usual M.O. was what I wanted for my birth. Bring enough copies of your birth plan for all your labor-delivery nurses as well as maternity nurses.

Labor aids. My labor aid is my doula, so I don't bring anything to help me get through labor. Other folks might want music CDs/ iPod, mints, snacks (if hospital allows), lotion for massage, exercise ball (check if the hospital has their own), etc. If you are being induced and will be there a while, consider bringing card games, DVDs and a portable DVD player. Maybe your laptop.

Clothes for labor. I'm good with the hospital gown, but you could bring a loose skirt and shirt to wear during labor instead, maybe a sports bra if you are planning on getting in the water. Also consider bringing flip-flops and socks to wear during and after labor.

Baby soap. I don't know if hospitals let you do this, but you could bring your own baby soap to the hospital for the after-birth bath. Or you could call your hospital in advance and ask what soap they use for newborn babies and the soap's list of ingredients. If you aren't comfortable with the hospital's soap and they won't use your soap, other options are to ask that your baby only be washed with water or to ask that your baby not be bathed at all. Either of these last two options will get your baby labeled a "Bio-hazard" and all nurses who handle the baby will have to put on gloves first.

Baby clothes. You need at least one outfit to take the baby home in. If price is no issue, you can always buy something in the hospital store, but if you want only organic fibers on your baby's skin, be sure to bring two or three outfits from home with you.

Receiving blankets. The hospital will give you one of these to use while in the hospital, but if you are picky about what touches your baby's skin, you'll want to have something ready to use as soon as the baby is born. It's also nice to have one to use for the trip home.

Newborn diapers. Even though I cloth diaper, I use disposables diapers and wipes in the hospital and until the merconium stage is over. I didn't take any diapers with me this last time, and was disappointed in the "fresh baby" smell (hello, phthalates) of the disposable diapers the hospital provided me with. I wish I'd taken some Seventh Generation diapers and wipes (or other brand that discloses all ingredients) with me to use instead.

Feminine pads. If you want to use chemical-free "greener" feminine pads after birth, you could bring your own feminine pads. Again, I like Seventh Generation, although personally I'd stick with whatever the hospital offers. If you wanted to be super green, you could bring your own reusable absorbent material. That would be too much for me to handle.

Nursing bra. Shop in a store that has expertise in fitting a pregnant mama. Ask your health provider for advice. Most mama-friendly hospitals will have a store with nursing gear. I'd only buy one or two before having the baby, since it's hard to know exactly what your size will be after you milk comes in. Bring some nursing pads too.

Change of clothes for mama. I would bring some of your smaller maternity clothes to wear home from the hospital.

Change of clothes for papa. If someone will be staying overnight with you, make sure to bring clothes for him or her too!

Overnight toiletries. Whatever you would pack for an overnight trip: toothbrush, toothpaste, contact solution, contact case, glasses, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner. Your after-birth shower will be one of the most important showers of your life. Make sure you have everything you would want for that.

Camera/ Video camera. Bring an extra battery if you've got one. Make sure you know your hospital's and care provider's rules for taking photos or videos during the delivery.

Phone and charger. You will probably want to call or text a few folks from your hospital room after delivery. Or you could just post to Facebook with your smartphone. If you are old school like me, don't forget your list of phone numbers.

Baby name list. Unless you are absolutely sure what name you are going to use, bring your list of names and maybe even a baby name book. Decide on spellings as well. It's very tough to change the spelling or name after handing over that information for the birth certificate -- so be very sure before you do.

Car seat. Research this purchase ahead of time and try to buy a car seat at least a month in advance so you can let it off-gas a bit outside or in your garage before putting your baby in it. Consult safety ratings as well as sources like HealthyStuff.org that look at the materials and chemicals used in products. Many folks choose to buy an infant car seat. For my second and third babies I've chosen to use a convertible car seat that can be used through the preschool years.

I recommend packing your bag in advance with everything you can pack in advance, with a list on top of things to pack at the last minute (toiletries, etc.).

Healthy Pregnancy Tips

Blog

by Margie Kelly, Communications Manaher, Healthy Child Healthy World

Do you remember the moment you first learned you were pregnant? After the shock and awe period passes, pregnancy is the perfect time to commit to eliminating toxic chemicals from your food, home, and personal care products.

Making your daily routines as healthy as possible during pregnancy will make you feel better and will go a long way toward protecting your unborn child from toxic chemicals like BPA, mercury, phthalates and more, all of which have been found in the bodies of pregnant women. Clearing out chemicals from your daily routines now is good practice for creating a healthy home environment for your newborn baby, who will be particularly vulnerable to harmful chemicals found in everyday products.

Over the years, Healthy Child has gathered some excellent pregnancy advice from our experts and friends. Consider these tips for a greener, healthier pregnancy:

Avoid pesticides

A recent scientific study showed a pregnant woman’s exposure to pesticides posed risks to a developing fetus similar to those associated with smoking tobacco. Learn all about the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 before heading to the grocery stores. Navigate the aisles for the cleanest, greenest fruits and vegetables grown without toxic chemicals.

Watch your intake of animal fats

Toxic chemicals like dioxin PCBs, and pesticides accumulate in fat, which means that when you eat certain fish or meat, you transfer those chemicals into your body. Look for low-fat options, trim the fat from fish and meats, and eat organic meat and wild seafood whenever possible.

Be smart about plastics

Plastics seem benign but they can harm health, especially the health of developing fetuses. Vinyl plastic is everywhere despite its composition of a carcinogenic core and dangerous additives, like phthalates, to make it soft. Avoiding vinyl is a good rule of thumb, whether it means ditching the plastic shower curtain and cling wraps or choosing non-vinyl building materials for your home.

Another plastic to avoid is the hormone-disrupting chemical Bisphenol A (BPA), which is found in some water bottles, cash register receipts, and canned foods. To limit your exposure to BPA, say “no” to receipts, carry glass or stainless steel bottles, and eat fresh or frozen foods.

Ditch the toxic cleaners

Bombarding your counters, tubs, and floors with toxic chemicals doesn’t make them cleaner, but it does cover them with nasty chemicals. Why do that? Stay away from products with warnings: “hazardous” “poison” “danger.” Instead, choose cleaners made without harmful chemicals that come certified as eco-friendly. It’s also easy to make your own cleaners, which will save you money and a trip to the store.

Choose safer cosmetics

Do you know how many personal care products you use on your body every day? It’s likely to be ten products, containing as many as 126 unique chemicals according to the Environmental Working Group. Those lotions, creams, shampoos, soaps, lip balms and more may contain chemicals that threaten to disrupt your baby’s development.

Pregnancy is the perfect time to start a new personal care regime with safer products. Read labels to avoid harmful chemicals like phthalates, parabens, and triclosan. And check out the Skin Deep database or Healthy Child Healthy World’s Trusted Partner list to shop healthy.

Take note: this advice is not just for women! Men are a critically important, though frequently overlooked, pregnancy partner. There’s no doubt that it’s better for the whole family if men reduce their toxic exposures before and during their partner’s pregnancy.

Did pregnancy inspire you to eliminate toxic chemicals from your daily routine?

Packing a Hospital Bag

Pregnant Woman Packing her Hospital Bag

One of the most favored tasks of the end of pregnancy is packing a bag for the hospital. Though what you put in the bag can also be a bit of a conundrum. What if you forget something? What if you pack too much stuff? And just what do you really need? These are questions most moms ask.

So what did you really need? Did you forget anything? If so, how did you deal with it. Share with us in the comments.

Salon Services While Pregnant

Woman Cutting Hair

Let's face it, when we hear about pregnancy the first thing we think about as moms is not the pregnancy glow that the myths often talk about. While many of us enjoy the changes in our bodies, they still can make us feel awkward and not attractive. To do something about this, we might turn to salon services for some pampering. This can be a great way to help you feel better and enjoy a bit of pampering.

Some of the services that moms enjoy while pregnant can include:

If you were going to go to a salon for some pampering, what would you get done?

Mom Who Was Told Baby Died in Womb Gets Unexpected Miracle

pregnantThe absolute worst news a pregnant woman can ever hear is that something is wrong with her baby, so understandably, mom Shelagh McAlpine was beyond devastated when she started bleeding heavily after suffering a placental abruption during her 28th week of pregnancy, and medics sadly told her that her baby had died in utero.

She was rushed to the hospital knowing all too well that she had lost her precious baby-to-be, which had to have been nothing short of horrific. And then when she arrived at the hospital, doctors still tried for seven minutes to locate the baby's heartbeat in the off chance that there was hope for a miracle. SEVEN minutes. (That's a really long time to search for a heartbeat.)

Shelagh describes that time as "the longest seven minutes of her life," but thankfully, the persistence of the doctors paid off. It turns out her baby girl was still alive; however, they found that she had holes in her heart and lung and also had a potentially fatal blood clot in her arm.

More from The Stir: Mom's Intuition Saves 'Dead' Baby From Morgue (VIDEO)

Even though she was only 28 weeks along, doctors went ahead and performed an emergency C-section to try and save Shelagh's baby's life, and incredibly -- they were successful. Mia Rose was born weighing 2 pounds, 10 ounces, and though she wound up facing 10 blood transfusions, surgery, and a very tough road ahead of her, she proved to be a brave little fighter. And on August 1, she was able to go home from the hospital with her parents and older brother.

If any newborn fits the definition of a miracle baby, it's Mia Rose for sure. I can't even begin to imagine what it must have been like for Shelagh to think she'd lost her child -- only to find out seven minutes later that there was a chance she might survive. She's definitely proof that moms have more inner strength than we realize, and the incredible love we have for our kids is sometimes all we need to pull us through an emotionally unbearable situation.

Do you think you'd handle something like this as well as Shelagh did?

Certain Dads Might Up Their Kid’s Odds of Autism

autismA groundbreaking new study on the cause of autism was released this week, and the focus is on dads for a change. So often it's the mother and her age or her health during pregnancy that's suspected, but this study found a direct correlation between a father's age at the time of conception and a child's chance of developing autism or schizophrenia.

The study published in Nature found that older fathers were more likely to have children with the disorders, while a mother's age had no effect. While the risk isn't dramatically higher -- about 2 percent higher for men 40 and older -- it could explain the rising rates of autism we've seen in recent years, as the average age of fathers has increased as well.

Researchers say this is significant. Dr. Fred R. Volkmar, director of the Child Study Center at the Yale School of Medicine, told The New York Times, “This study provides some of the first solid scientific evidence for a true increase in the condition. It is extremely well done and the sample meticulously characterized.”

So what does this mean for parents and parents-to-be? Well, not much really as far as I can tell. I suppose it might encourage some people to have children sooner rather than later, but the risk doesn't seem to be high enough to really alter your life plans. Maybe it makes vaccinations a little less ominous for some. Maybe it makes you rethink you ideal mate.

Mostly I think it's just one more piece of information to add to the complicated search for answers that are far too slow in coming for far too many families being affected by autism every day.

Does this study surprise you? Will it change your plans regarding children?

Nigeria: 'Missed Children, Major Challenge to Polio Eradication'

Lagos State government has ascribed increasing number of missed children during routine immunisation exercise as a major factor militating against the eradication of the disease in Nigeria.

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, who stated this at a meeting of the State Taskforce on Polio Eradication in his office to review feedback from the Presidential Taskforce Committee on Polio Eradication noted that war against polio can only be won if every eligible child is immunised.

Idris said, "The reason why we are here is to outline our peculiar challenges, review our priority actions, review all micro plans and finalise our operational plans to ensure that every eligible children are reached in our routine immunisation exercises."

The Commissioner who is also the Chairman of the State Taskforce on Polio Eradication outlined the peculiar challenges responsible for the number of missed children and under vaccination to include; absent of children during immunisation, poor performance of vaccination teams, failure of house to house visit, absence of local government taskforce on polio eradication, poor quality of micro plans and insecurity in high risk state amongst others.

"This is why the State Taskforce is meeting to review all micro-plans, ensure training activities are initiated at least three weeks before immunisation plus days (IPDs), revise current supervisory methods to enhance real-time correction on the field and finalise operational plan for closer engagement of traditional leaders," he said.

Idris averred that the state in its drive to ensure that no child is missed during immunisation will implement intensified ward communication strategy including intensified social mobilisation activities and also sustain advocacy with state and local government officials and ensure capacity building on accountability framework.

He said: "Though our immunisation is better than it used to be but we still have challenges we need to tackle especially in the areas of missed children in immunisation exercise and this is why we are engaging our traditional, community and religious leaders in our polio eradication drive."

The commissioner, who reiterated the state government's commitment to ensuring that Lagos remains polio free, noted that the intensification of routine immunisation will be prioritised while challenges militating against successful immunisation campaign will be tackled.

"Our focus is on routine immunisation and that is why we are trying to equip our primary healthcare centres because that is where routine immunisation can actually be carried out successfully," Idris said.

He said that intensification of the routine immunisation strategies like sensitisation of traditional birth attendants and patent medicine vendors to mobilise parents to take their children to the nearest health centre is very essential.

Idris further stated that, re-orientation of midwives in the midwives service scheme facilities, supervisory visit per month by the local government area team to the health facilities, market vaccination as part of outreaches, sensitisation of private health providers, public secondary and tertiary health facilities and ensuring adequate provision of required logistics will also help to ensure a polio free status for the state.
